Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Mineral Resources of the Herscher Quadrangle Very little of the topography, except the bluffs of Kankakee River, is determined by the bedrock of the area. Nearly all the relief features are con structional by glacial agencies, but in the path Of the Kankakee glacial torrent they have been modified by running water and subsequently by wind. The greater portion of the quadrangle is occupied by a shallow basin between two glacial moraines (broad ridges of glacial drift), one on the southern edge and one in the northeastern corner. Nowhere is the topography rough, and the total difference in altitude between the highest and lowest points in the quadrangle is only about 210 feet. Pilot Knob, in sec. 2, T. 29 N., R. 10 E., is the highest point and stands Slightly more than 750 feet above sea level. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mineral Resources of the Big Frog Wilderness Study Area and Additions, Polk County, Tennessee and Fannin County, Georgia No metallic mineral resources are known within the proposed Big Frog Wilderness. Nonmetallic resources, including slate and phyllite, stone, and sand and gravel are pres ent locally but are not currently of value because similar resources exist closer to markets outside the study area; these deposits, therefore, would have only marginal use in the region. A possibility also exists for the presence of natural gas at great depths. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensively revised, restructured, and updated edition continues to present an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the subject, exploring the world’s landforms from a broad systems perspective. It covers the basics of Earth surface forms and processes, while reflecting on the latest developments in the field. Fundamentals of Geomorphology begins with a consideration of the nature of geomorphology, process and form, history, and geomorphic systems, and moves on to discuss: structure: structural landforms associated with plate tectonics and those associated with volcanoes, impact craters, and folds, faults, and joints process and form: landforms resulting from, or influenced by, the exogenic agencies of weathering, running water, flowing ice and meltwater, ground ice and frost, the wind, and the sea; landforms developed on limestone; and landscape evolution, a discussion of ancient landforms, including palaeosurfaces, stagnant landscape features, and evolutionary aspects of landscape change. This third edition has been fully updated to include a clearer initial explanation of the nature of geomorphology, of land surface process and form, and of land-surface change over different timescales. The text has been restructured to incorporate information on geomorphic materials and processes at more suitable points in the book. Finally, historical geomorphology has been integrated throughout the text to reflect the importance of history in all aspects of geomorphology. Fundamentals of Geomorphology provides a stimulating and innovative perspective on the key topics and debates within the field of geomorphology. Written in an accessible and lively manner, it includes guides to further reading, chapter summaries, and an extensive glossary of key terms. The book is also illustrated throughout with over 200 informative diagrams and attractive photographs, all in colour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Drake has skillfully woven together the various strands of the Appalachian experience into a sweeping whole. Touching upon folk traditions, health care, the environment, higher education, the role of blacks and women, and much more, Drake offers a compelling social history of a unique American region. The Appalachian region, extending from Alabama in the South up to the Allegheny highlands of Pennsylvania, has historically been characterized by its largely rural populations, rich natural resources that have fueled industry in other parts of the country, and the strong and wild, undeveloped land. The rugged geography of the region allowed Native American societies, especially the Cherokee, to flourish. Early white settlers tended to favor a self-sufficient approach to farming, contrary to the land grabbing and plantation building going on elsewhere in the South. The growth of a market economy and competition from other agricultural areas of the country sparked an economic decline of the region's rural population at least as early as 1830. The Civil War and the sometimes hostile legislation of Reconstruction made life even more difficult for rural Appalachians. Recent history of the region is marked by the corporate exploitation of resources. Regional oil, gas, and coal had attracted some industry even before the Civil War, but the postwar years saw an immense expansion of American industry, nearly all of which relied heavily on Appalachian fossil fuels, particularly coal. What was initially a boon to the region eventually brought financial disaster to many mountain people as unsafe working conditions and strip mining ravaged the land and its inhabitants. A History of Appalachia also examines pockets of urbanization in Appalachia. Chemical, textile, and other industries have encouraged the development of urban areas. At the same time, radio, television, and the internet provide residents direct links to cultures from all over the world. The author looks at the process of urbanization as it belies commonly held notions about the region's rural character.

They also contain the highest mountains in Utah, many of which exceed 13,000 feet, including Kings Peak at 13,528 feet -- the highest point in Utah. There are well over 1,000 natural lakes and over 400 miles of streams in this 100-mile long range in northeastern Utah. While the intended scope of this book is fairly broad, the author presents the geologic story of the Uinta Mountains with a clarity and wit that gives this book a unique and popular appeal.
