Book excerpt: Instant New York Times Bestseller A simple, straightforward exploration of Transcendental Meditation and its benefits from world authority Bob Roth. Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Seinfeld. Ray Dalio and Ellen DeGeneres. Gwyneth Paltrow and Howard Stern. Tom Hanks and Gisele Bündchen. What do they have in common? The answer is a Transcendental Meditation teacher named Bob Roth, who has spent the past fifty years helping many thousands of people access their innate creativity and power through this simple, nonreligious technique. Roth’s students range from titans of business and the arts to federal prisoners, from war-scarred veterans to overworked moms and dads. Medical experts agree that the epidemic of stress is damaging our physical and emotional health at younger and younger ages. While there is no one single cure, the Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple practice that dramatically changes how we respond to stress and life’s challenges. With scientifically proven benefits— reduced stress and anxiety, and improved focus, sleep, resilience, creativity, and memory, to name a few—this five-thousand-year-old technique has a clear and direct impact on our very modern problems. Once a skeptic, Roth trained under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the twentieth century’s foremost scientist of consciousness and meditation, and has since become one of the most experienced and sought-after meditation teachers in the world. In Strength in Stillness, Roth breaks down the science behind Transcendental Meditation in a new, accessible way. He highlights the three distinct types of meditation—Focused Attention, Open Monitoring, and Self-Transcending—and showcases the evidence that the third, Self-Transcending, or Transcendental Meditation, is a uniquely accessible, effective, and efficient way to reduce stress, access inner power, and build resilience. Free of gimmicks, mystical verbiage, and obscure theory, Strength in Stillness offers a clear explanation for how Transcendental Meditation can calm the mind, body, and spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's pretty safe to say that most of us want to live as healthy and successful a life as possible. So maybe we take the stairs instead of the elevator. We burn the midnight oil to finish that business proposal. We try to stop eating junk. And most of the time, this gets us nowhere...and with more junk. In The Strength Code, Eric Falstrault teaches us, in his no-frills, no-punches-pulled approach, how to identify the root of a bad habit and find a solution that will flip it into a positive, so we can lead the stronger and healthier life we've always wanted. It takes more than stairs to condition our bodies. Working late stimulates the mind and when it's ready to wind down not only does our work suffer but so does our sleep. And taking control of our health requires much more than giving up donuts, so we shouldn't bother, unless we're ready for a complete overhaul of everything we're used to feeding ourselves. For example, one of the code's lesson is: "Preserving life is a matter of what we eat." Sounds a lot like the adage, "You are what you eat," doesn't it? It's easy to forget and difficult to live by, but Falstrault provides a wealth of information and advice on how to eat well, and continue to eat well, for life. Falstrault follows his five simple lessons with real-world examples of "modern-day warriors," who live the lessons. We all will find ourselves identifying with these warriors on some level and consequently will learn from others' mistakes. The meat of The Strength Code is served up as twelve habits, which he boils down into simple phrases, and then expounds upon with loads of justification, advice, and even the cause and effect the habit will have. For example, "Habit #3: Getting your sleep right," addresses a major fact of life. Nothing causes a bad, unproductive day like starting out with a bad night's sleep. This includes both the inability to stay asleep and getting too much sleep. Falstrault explains the common chemical and behavioral reasons for bad sleeping habits, such as improper levels of magnesium and cortisol, working late, eating late, or even some type of food intolerances. Only by identifying what's causing our bad habits can we begin to solve them. The code finishes with a hefty section on building strengths-both physical and mental. We're talking about the strength of a warrior-the strength to quiet the voice in our head that tells us to take the easy route, to stay in our comfort zone. He pairs a wealth of advice on physical training and weight lifting with principles on training the mind to be equally strong. When one achieves a goal, it triggers hormones that influence us to do even more, to go the extra mile, in order to experience that feeling again. It establishes a positive pattern of success that builds upon itself over time, until meeting goals and being successful becomes part of who we are. And this is the start of a new life. A new beginning, when we are able to discover our true passions, live them out, and share our newfound enthusiasm with others, as we help them achieve their own goals. The Strength Code arms us with a warrior's habits, as we build a personalized program that will give us the mental and physical strength to maintain a long, healthy life of success.

Book excerpt: Fight aging, build strength, and achieve whole-body health in just 30 minutes a day, once or twice a week, with these 30 strength training exercises based on science and mindfulness practices—for people of all ages and activity levels. The mixed messages we’ve received about exercise, aerobics, and mental and physical fitness are all misleading...or at least incomplete. Clinical research shows that we lose muscle mass as we age, and that preventing muscle loss through strength training—more than cardio, stretching, or flexibility—is the key to staying active, healthy, and well. Deep Fitness introduces Mindful Strength Training to Failure (MSTF), a science-based method that reverses muscle loss and improves overall strength in just 1 or 2 30-minute sessions a week. MSTF exercises are simple and effective, and can be done at home with resistance bands and bodyweight, or with the machines at your local gym. Using slow reps, MSTF marries mindful body awareness with proven strength-training techniques to help you become stronger at any age. With more than 30 full-color exercises, Deep Fitness explains the science behind MSTF. It shows how the program boosts longevity and healthspan; aids weight loss and fat reduction; increases overall wellness and mental health; and can improve or reverse symptoms of: • Prediabetes and diabetes • Cardiovascular disease • Metabolic syndrome • Alzheimer’s and dementia • Chronic inflammation • Osteoporosis • Other chronic illnesses Appropriate for people of all ages and activity levels, the exercises and techniques in Deep Fitness are effective, straightforward, and sustainable, helping you enjoy the vibrant, fit, whole-body health you deserve.

Book excerpt: An illustrated manual for using physical movement and alignment to resolve chronic pain and tension and work with the emotions • Includes 90 exercises to work with emotions through the body and support the neck, shoulders, lower back, feet, and overall posture as well as breathing and voice • Explains how to listen to the body’s signals to discover our physical and emotional blindspots--the weaknesses and misalignments at the root of our discomfort • Draws on Zen shiatsu, Rolfing, yoga, and Gestalt psychotherapy to explain how transformation of physical structure corrects imbalances in the unconscious mind Developed by Cathy Thompson through her many years as a bodywork therapist, the Thompson Method incorporates Zen shiatsu, Rolfing, yoga, and Gestalt psychotherapy to heal pain in the physical body both through bodywork and by recognizing the emotional blockages that often underlie chronic pain, tension, and poor alignment. In this practical manual, Thompson and her protégé-daughter Tara Thompson Lewis provide a deep understanding of body mechanics and how to work with emotions through the body. They explore how to listen to the body’s signals to discover our physical and emotional blindspots--the weaknesses and misalignments at the root of our discomfort--and explain how transformation of your physical structure can correct imbalances in the unconscious mind caused by repressed memories and emotional traumas. Offering illustrated instructions for 90 corrective alignment exercises, the authors show how to release body tensions, realign the body’s dynamic structure, work with the deep postural muscles, and support the neck, shoulders, lower back, and feet to strengthen the emotional and physical body as well as improve singing, dancing, yoga, and posture while sitting at the computer. They also explore breathing and bodywork practices to release the vocal mechanism and free the voice for more fluid and powerful self-expression. By recognizing and releasing the deeper emotional triggers beneath our physical complaints, the Thompson Method allows you to resolve chronic pains, increase body awareness and free movement, and create the foundation for good health and well-being.
