Download or read book Nehru written by Shashi Tharoor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shashi Tharoor delivers an incisive biography of the great secularist who—alongside his spiritual father, Mahatma Gandhi—led the movement for India’s independence from British rule and ushered his newly independent country into the modern world. The man who would one day help topple British rule and become India’s first prime minister started out as a surprisingly unremarkable student. Born into a wealthy, politically influential Indian family in the waning years of the Raj, Jawaharlal Nehru was raised on Western secularism and the humanist ideas of the Enlightenment. Once he met Gandhi in 1916, Nehru threw himself into the nonviolent struggle for India’s independence, a struggle that wasn’t won until 1947. India had found a perfect political complement to her more spiritual advocate, but neither Nehru nor Gandhi could prevent the horrific price for independence: partition. This fascinating biography casts an unflinching eye on Nehru’s heroic efforts for, and stewardship of, independent India and gives us a careful appraisal of his legacy to the world.

Book Synopsis The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower by : Louis Galambos
Download or read book The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower written by Louis Galambos and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2001-10-12 with total page 743 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final set of volumes (Vol 18-21 sold separately) of The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower contain 1,783 documents drawn from Eisenhower's second term as president from 20 January 1957 to 20 January 1961. Completing a monumental project that began with publication of The War Years in 1970, this final set of volumes of The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower contains 1,783 documents drawn from Eisenhower's second term as president from 20 January 1957 to 20 January 1961. In these years Eisenhower worked hard to hold the focus of American national politics on the two major objectives he had set for his presidency in 1952: to sustain the policy of containment without precipitating a war with the Soviet Union and to reduce the role of the federal government in U.S. domestic affairs. In both cases, events at home and abroad intruded—diverting attention to immediate problems, endangering the peace, and forcing the White House to devote most of its leadership to the crises of the day. As president during this tense period, Eisenhower maintained an extensive and revealing correspondence with prominent individuals as well as with personal friends. These letters, together with the occasional entries made in his diary, shed considerable light upon the major national concerns of the 1950s. The volumes also include private and secret correspondence previously unavailable to scholars. Some of these items have been only recently declassified, and many appear here in print for the first time. Taken as a whole, the Eisenhower papers from 1957-61 provide firm documentary evidence of the manner in which Eisenhower dealt with the complex internal and external problems faced by all of our modern political leaders.

Download or read book Nehru written by Walter Crocker and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2011-11-20 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elegant, perceptive, and startlingly prophetic, Nehru: A Contemporary’s Estimate is one of the finest accounts of Nehru ever written. Walter Crocker, the Australian high commissioner to India, admired Nehru the man—his grace, style, intelligence and energy—and was deeply critical of many of his political decisions—the invasion of Goa, India’s Kashmir policy, the Five Year Plans. This book, written shortly after Nehru’s death, is full of invaluable first hand observations about the man and his politics. Many of Crocker’s points, too—especially the implications of the Five Year Plans and of the introduction of democracy to India—are particularly relevant today. Out of print for many years, this classic biography has been reissued with an authoritative foreword by Ramachandra Guha.

Book Synopsis Verdicts on Nehru by : Ramachandra Guha
Download or read book Verdicts on Nehru written by Ramachandra Guha and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2013-05-26 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first prime minister of free India, Jawaharlal Nehru, has been a widely adored figure across the country. However, as is the case with most public figures, there were some circles where the prime minister was unpopular, and his followers highly reviled. The vast and varied criticisms of Nehru weren't simply a matter of his personality and how he was adored by the women of the country, but rather they play with the fundamental question of whether he was a good enough prime minister for a country that was taking its first steps into existence. In Verdicts on Nehru: The Rise and Fall of a Reputation, Ramachandra Guha explains these instances and talks about how one can still find it difficult to be a Nehru supporter in current times. Read on to know more about what made Nehru and how the public received him in a country as wide and varied as India.
