Form, then, in Dante's universe, as in writing, is order. And since no right sense of the significance of order can be developed by mere extracts, the whole com position ofa writer should be given the student for consideration. Only thus can he appreciate that the workman hath in his heart a pur pose. Moreover, the student who masters an essay in all its logical setting forth of an idea toughens his mind to grapple with hard books and to get pleasure from conquering them whether he enjoys them or not. And by means Of this grappling his intelligence can be got actively at work striking out ideas and setting them in order. With the twofold purpose, therefore, Of developing in the student through good reading both a sense Of form and also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abridged History of the United States: Or Republic of America The leading objects of the author of this work, have been to give the events of the history with clearness and accuracy; with such illustrations of time and place addressed to the eye, as shall secure their retention in the memory; and, at the same time, with such an order of arrangement, as will enable the mind to recall, at need, what it thus retains. This we regard as important, not only with respect to this particular study; but as rightly laying out the ground-plan of the intellect, so far as the whole range of history is concerned. We have endeavoured to make the book convenient, - by side notes with dates, - by numbered paragraphs of suitable length for reading classes, - and by questions on each paragraph, placed at the bottom of the page. These questions are so put, that youthful teachers may avail themselves of the author's long experience, to acquire a manner of questioning, which, while it is not obscure, will yet oblige the pupil to think, and which will bring into relief prominent points. We have, indeed, been desirous to cultivate the memory, the intellect, and the taste. But much more anxious have we been to sow the seeds of virtue, by showing the good in such amiable lights, that the youthful heart shall kindle into desires of imitation. And we have been careful to give clear conceptions of those deeds, which are proper to imitate; while, with regard to bad actions, we have, as far as possible, given the result, rather than the detail. There is another and more vital His tory, - that of the Mind and Soul of a people. Records of the collective mind of a nation write the History of its Spirit. The birth and development of the Spirit of America are clearly recorded in cer tain public documents. These records, contained in broadly accepted public documents and in speeches of individual men, have been the outspeaking of a true national voice, - the expression of the collective Spirit of a people. Casting out from the huge mass of public documents such as are of transitory interest or simply new statements of already accepted prin ciples, the list is not long. It will be well for our people if the same courage to search for and follow the Right is shown by the records in the next as it has been in the last three hundred years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Men of Mind It was the work of the principal laborers on this mighty edifice which we attempted to judge in Men of Action, and this was a comparatively easy task, because the work stands out concretely for all to see, and, as far as essentials go, at least, we are all agreed as to what is good work and what is bad. But the task which is attempted in the present volume is a much more difficult one, for here we are called upon to judge not deeds but thoughts - thoughts, that is, as translated into a novel, or a poem, or a statue, or a painting, or a theory of the universe. Time when the accumulated mass of knowledge is great, beyond the human capacity, service is done to science, by clear ar rangement and devices addressed to the eye. If the faculties are en abled to seize and hold fast the frame-work of an important subject, future facts will naturally find and keep their own place in the mind, and the whole subject rest there in philosophical order. Not only is this important, as respects the particular study thus ac quired; but as regards intellectual habits and general improvement. To accomplish these ends, with regard to the history of the Uni ted States, is one of the main objects of the present work. Its plan is chronographically exhibited in front of the title page. The maps, included between the periods of the work, coincide in time with the branches of the subject; and the sketches on the maps picture the events there expressed in words. But most minds find it dificult to remember dates, though ever so well arranged; and hence experienced educationists recommend that the memory should not in this respect be overtaxed; but that dates should rather be kept at hand in books, to be consulted as occasion requires. Hence, the importance of arrangements in printed works, by which dates may stand prominent, and be easily found. A cur sory glance at the chronological table, and along the margin of this work, may satisfy the observer that this task has been executed with faithfulness. Never were six months longer, as man's mind measures time by its events, and never before in the history of the world have a thousand millions of men waited so eagerly for news from hour to hour. And life around us has changed in those six months, and we have all changed, and we see the world with new eyes. Even the war itself means to us today something different. How it came about - the question today seems stale and forgotten! How it can come to an end - that is the problem which overshadows all our thoughts and feelings! Six months have made us all sympathizers and sufferers and mourners: we pray for delivery, we long for peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Mind in Action The instincts which the Puritan set himself most determinedly to repress were the most potent instincts Of ordinary healthy life. They were the sex instinct and those responses to the instinct of self-assertion that show in the form of anger, envy, emulation, pride, ambition, and so forth. Above all, to the Puritan as to Paul, sex was sin. Now, Paul declares, the works of the Flesh are manifest, which are these: Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I tell you that they which do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God. And Observe that these sins are not sins of action alone; half of them are sins of thought. The instincts were not merely to be prevented from impelling to sinful action; they were to be stopped from getting into the conscious mind. Book excerpt: The brilliant, controversial, bestselling critique of American culture that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times)—now featuring a new afterword by Andrew Ferguson in a twenty-fifth anniversary edition. In 1987, eminent political philosopher Allan Bloom published The Closing of the American Mind, an appraisal of contemporary America that “hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock therapy” (The New York Times) and has not only been vindicated, but has also become more urgent today. In clear, spirited prose, Bloom argues that the social and political crises of contemporary America are part of a larger intellectual crisis: the result of a dangerous narrowing of curiosity and exploration by the university elites. Now, in this twenty-fifth anniversary edition, acclaimed author and journalist Andrew Ferguson contributes a new essay that describes why Bloom’s argument caused such a furor at publication and why our culture so deeply resists its truths today.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Future in America: A Search After Realities The question "Are you a Polygamist?" "Are you an Anarchist?" The questions seem impertinent. They are part of a long paper of interrogations I must answer satisfactorily if I am to be regarded as a desirable alien to enter the United States of America. I want very much to pass that great statue of Liberty illuminating the World (from a central position in New York Harbor), in order to see things in its light, to talk to certain people, to appreciate certain atmospheres, and so I resist the provocation to answer impertinently. I do not even volunteer that I do not smoke and am a total abstainer; on which points it would seem the States as a whole still keep an open mind.
