Book Synopsis Postcards from the Middle East by : Chris Naylor
Download or read book Postcards from the Middle East written by Chris Naylor and published by Lion Books. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly married, Chris and Susanna Naylor set off for a new life in the Arab world - living first in Kuwait, then Jordan and finally Lebanon. In a region never far from the news, they discovered their expectations - of war, terrorism, desert sand dunes, men in white robes and veiled women, camels and Kalashnikovs, indeed their own reasons for being there - were to be constantly challenged. As they found out, the reality bore little resemblance to their pre-conceptions. Postcards from the Middle East is a tale of love from one family's experiences: a story of work, schooling, friendships, worship and shared family life, lived out in precious communities against a back drop of world-changing events and spectacular scenery. The Naylors had never experienced such hospitality, danger, wildlife spectacles or snow before they moved to the Middle East. Their story provides a multi-coloured window on an extraordinary and rapidly changing Arab world.

Book excerpt: In Giving Out Yards, Tara Flynn puts paid to the long-debated question of what makes us Irish, nailing it in one collective and hilarious grumble-fest. Her razor-sharp wit and keen analysis of those topics that bring us out in a rash - and running to the phone/laptop/neighbour for a healthy dose of spleen-venting - leaves no moan unturned. Strictly non-solutions-based (if we found those, what on earth would we give out about?), here you'll find plenty of advice on how best to milk your grievances, with handy lists and tips, and a cast of characters including Tom the Taxi Driver, Mairead Who Loves the Sound of Her Own Voice and Ciaran the Keyboard Warrior. If you can't beat them - 'That shower in the Dail', 'the other shower', the Angelus bongs, cyclists, potholes, the three Ds (drips, drink and drugs), criminals of all collar-hue, to name but a few - then you might as well knock the craic out of them. So look no further: the whine-line is open ...

Book excerpt: New York's Hamptons are the summer playground for Wall Street big shots, Hollywood starlets, and all species of glitterati in between. But when a Middle Eastern man rigged with explosives walks into a chic restaurant and blows himself up, all that glamour is shattered. And so is the security and safety of the entire United States. Drawn into this case is Justin Westwood, a local East End Harbor cop who is still haunted by the violent deaths of his wife and daughter years before. After meeting a beautiful woman whose hunger for human contact and comfort matches his own, he believes he is finally winning the battle with his old ghosts. Yet just as he is beginning to grasp hold of the new life he's been craving, he is saddled with this new murder investigation-one far more dangerous than any he's ever tackled. Soon after the restaurant explosion-the first suicide bombing ever to hit U.S. shores-a small plane crashes in the middle of East End Harbor. It is initially deemed an accident but after the pilot's body disappears, as do all traces of his identification, Justin realizes he's dealing with sabotage. When more terrorist strikes occur, each more devastating than the last, Justin also begins to understand that they all share an elusive, undeniable link-one that will plunge him into a terrifying journey leading to some of the country's most powerful figures and their darkest, most closely held secrets. If he is to survive, Justin must wend his way through a complicated maze of corruption and confront startling truths about big business and politics and, most of all, about himself. For a long time, Justin Westwood has wondered if he could ever truly be frightened again, or if anything could reclaim his soul. Some part of him hoped it was possible. He is about to get his wish...

Book excerpt: A secret truth: On the early morning of August 16, 2006, Osama bin Laden was arrested in Brooklyn by the New York FBI Terrorism Task Force. They were acting on a tip called in by Barbara Janik. Janik tells her story: Chasing bin Laden takes readers along with Janik on an emotional journey through the hidden world of lay investigations, which is charged with high-stakes puzzle solving, Arabic message boards, and anxiety-provoking collaborations with the FBI. A Pulitzer prize-winning journalist backs her up! In The Killing of Osama bin Laden, Seymour Hersh states that “bin Laden was a prisoner of the ISI [Pakistani intelligence] at the Abbottabad compound since 2006…” What does this mean? Janik’s memoir tells the story of how, when, and where Osama bin Laden was arrested. He was likely transferred in 2006 from the United States to the compound in Pakistan, where he remained in custody until the 2011 raid. But how does Janik know this stuff? Janik, who is a historian, computer expert, and former adjunct professor, is a master at research and “Google-fu”. She worked with the FBI. The truth of the arrest was revealed to her by the FBI through a series of cloak-and-dagger phone conversations. Yet, can she prove she isn’t making this up? On her website, Janik has uploaded phone records and emails showing the times and content of her conversations with the FBI. There is also a PDF of message board conversations from early 2007. She’s been telling the same story since 2006. Want to know more? Click “Add to Cart”. You won’t regret it.
