Burr, of Cornell Univer siry, the general editor of the series, for reading all the manuscript and making many suggestions for improvements. Several of my former students have helped me; in particular, Professor A. C. Krey of the University of Minnesota, who prepared the maps, bibliographies, and index; Willy Jahr, ph.d., who read some of the earlier chapters; Professor Frederick Duncalf of the University of Texas, who has helped me in reading proof; these and others I wish to thank. Any mistakes in the book I am responsible for; the number would have been greater except for the generous assist ance which I have received. Lastly, I am much indebted to my wife and three daughters for frequent criticism and aid. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is so called because it is a narration of the events which ended in the overthrow Of the ancient civilized or Roman world, and laid the foundation of the princi pal states Of modern times. Thus all agree in look ing upon the Middle Ages as a period of transition, during which was brought about the union of three societies, the Roman Empire, the barbarian world, and the Church, that at the death Of Theodosius stood in Opposition to each other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Middle Ages This translation is published in the confident belief that it will prove as valuable a book for school use and general reading among us as it has proved itself in France. Care has been taken to distinguish the editor's work from the author's, in both text and notes. Some few omissions have been made from the author's text without notice, chiefly for the purpose of simplifying the narrative, and corrections of dates and of manifest typographical errors have not been marked, but in every case where the author's meaning has been changed the fact is indicated by the use of brackets, and the editor's notes are signed, while theauthor's are left unsigned. In general, the intention has been to confine changes and notes to points of sufficient importance to justify notice, but in a book of this kind it is hardly possible that every statement in need of revision has been detected, and I am conscious to myself of unequal knowledge of the different subjects dealt with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginning of the Middle Ages The present volume must be considered as an introduction or preface to the series of "Epochs of Modern History," rather than as an integral member of the series. The other volumes are narratives, and enter into detail. This one is a mere general sketch, necessarily one of the barest outline, faint and vague where they are full. My aim has been little more than to disengage the leading lines in the history of five most important and most confused centuries, and to mark the influences which most asserted themselves, and which seem to have most governed the results as we see them in subsequent history. In this summary view I have confined my attention mainly to the West, saying little of the great nations of later times in the North and East - Scandinavia, Poland, Hungary, Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Middle Ages The period of time of which this book treats is that lying between the greatest splendor of the Roman Empire and the beginning of what may properly be called the Middle Ages. It is a period which has often been passed over lightly by historians or dismissed with a sneer as the Dark Ages of the world. And this was done in spite of the fact that perhaps the greatest historian, all things considered, who has ever written in the English language, chose just this period for his theme. It is not improbable that the very title of Gibbon's great work may have done its part toward creating a false impression of the time he describes. If one comes to our period as a time of Decline and Fall merely, one can hardly fail to carry away from the study of it a depressing sense of gloom and wretchedness. Gibbon himself, great historian as he was, did not succeed in avoiding this danger. His splendid narrative is on the whole a mournful one. We feel ourselves to be dealing with the wild movements of men, either half brutal or wholly brutalized. We see a magnificent edifice crumbling to decay, but we are not impressed with the elements of life contained in this very process. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Middle Ages In this text-book three subjects have been emphasized: first, the work of the Christian Church, the greatest of the civilizing agencies; second, the debt which we owe to the Byzantine and Arabic civilizations; third, the life of the times. While endeavoring to subordinate mere facts and dates, I have intended to introduce those with which a pupil should be familiar. It is impossible to name the sources to which I am indebted; as I have formed my opinions gradually, during thirteen years in which I have been engaged in studying and teaching medieval history. In preparing the maps I have profited greatly by the admirable Oxford Historical Atlas of Modern Europe. Dr. A. F. Nightingale, of Chicago, Mr. F. L. Thompson, of New York, and Dr. Caroline Colvin, one of my students, have read the whole manuscript and made many helpful suggestions. Prof. E .H. Castle and Dr. A. C. Howland, of the Teachers College, Dr. E. A. Singer, of Philadelphia, Prof. Wilfred H. Munro, of Brown University, Prof. E. P. Cheyney, and Dr. W. E. Lingelbach, of the University of Pennsylvania, have read one or more chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Wayfaring Life in the Middle Ages (Xivth Century) We know Egypt, thanks to her tombs, and we know Rome, thanks to Pompeii, in these modern days, better than we know the Middle Ages of Europe and the life of an ordinary man during that period. We cannot hope to find in any corner of France or England a Pompeii, catacombs, or pyramids. In our countries the human torrent has never ceased flowing; rapid, impetuous, and tumultuous in its course, it has at no time ensured the preservation of the past by deposits of quiet ooze. But, this common life of our ancestors, is it indiscernible, impossible to reconstruct? is that of kings and princes alone accessible to our view through the distance of ages, like those great monuments which men see when they cannot distinguish the houses in a distant city? Surely not. But to get at the heart of the nation, to find touch with the greater number, a patient and extended inquiry is necessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medieval Europe This book aims to trace the development of Europe and its civilization, from the decline of the Roman Empire to the opening of the sixteenth century, for the benefit of the college student and the general reader. It is almost needless to say that such a work makes little claim to originality in method and still less in subject-matter, which it has shame lessly borrowed from numerous sources. Indeed, in a book of this sort it is more fitting to apologize for anything new that one says than for following in old and beaten tracks. The author, of course, hopes that without making too radical departures he has introduced some improvement in selection and presentation of material, and that he has made few mistakes of fact and interpretation. The Table of Contents indicates the general plan of the volume, which is to treat medieval Europe as a whole and to hang the story upon a single thread, rather than to recount as distinct narratives the respective histories of France, England, Germany, Italy, and other countries of modem Europe. French or English history may be studied as such in courses and books so labeled. Moreover, the modern interest in the national state has usually been car ried too far in the study of the Middle Ages. Local division, not national unity and central government, is surely the striking feature through most of the medieval centuries.
