He traces the deve10pment'of his doctrinal system as an expansion of Paulinism. He speaks of theinfluence of Pelagius as affecting him by way of reaction. He smiles derisively at the futile resistance of his doctrinal opponents and points out the elements of indestructible truth in his system. And from this his enthusiasm takes fire, and he begins a marvelous panegyric upon the great Bishop of Hippo, the character of the man, his influence upon his own age and upon succeeding ages, his power in the present and his sure place in the future of theo logical thought. The gong that announces the end of the lecture period 1s apparently unheeded, until, at the conclusion of a mag nificent climax, the lecturer stops suddenly, bows to his rapt auditors, seizes his manuscript, and, turning, disappears through the door behind his desk amid loud and prolonged applause. As has been said, a German professor may offer courses of lectures in subjects outside his own department. Doctor Harnack, though a regular professor of church history, is the most popular lecturer in Berlin upon New Testament introduction. In fact, it would seem that when he advertises courses in introduction, the professors in New Testament criticism avoid entering into com petition with him and offer other courses. None but the largest halls will accommodate the crowds that he attracts, and one who does not secure an early assignment of a seat may find himself under the necessity of sitting in the back row or perching upon a. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and Ameiican Methodism. Bond, Emery, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Methodists Under Persecution This work was undertaken for the purpose of ascertaining, SO far as possible, the actual extent of the suffering of the early Methodists, and of their struggle against persecution. It deals only with events in the British Isles and covers the life of the Rev. John Wesley. There was persecution after his death, but by that time the crisis had passed and Methodism had become SO thoroughly established that there was no longer any possibility of crushing it. Therefore what followed, though extremely trying, was more incidental. At the beginning of the task the hope was entertained of making this a source book of facts, but the abundance of material soon made this plan impracticable. Were all the material to be used which is at hand, it would make a volume of twice this Size. Therefore this does not purport to be a complete account. For the sake of brevity some material has been omitted entirely, and wherever possible, nearly all has been abridged. In some in stances narratives have been broken for this purpose. However, it is believed that enough is given, both to Show the extent of the sufferings of the Methodists, and to portray the spirit of their persecutors. In the search for material nothing has been found anywhere that would suggest an outline for the work, or that would direct the student to the sources. It seems to be almost entirely an unexplored field. It has been necessary, therefore, to handle volume after volume wherever material seemed likely to be found. Between two and three thousand volumes have thus been re viewed. Also such English periodicals as refer to the subject and could be found have been consulted. Of the three collections Of pamphlets relating to the early Methodists, and found in this country, all have been carefully examined. As I was intended for the building business, all my time was taken up in learning what was proper to fit me for that employment, especially, architecture. When I was about fifteen years of age, I was sent to Hull, to learn my business with a brother-in-law. I was then remarkably serious, loved retirement, and kept no company, but went to the church constantly, and met on Sunday evenings with a society of well disposed people, in the vestry-room of the High Church. Whether these people were acquainted with the power of godliness, I know not, as I was then an entire stranger to everything of that kind myself; nor do I remember that any particular im pressions, of a Spiritual nature, were made upon my mind; only I thought, This is the way to serve God, and get safe to heaven. Indeed, I judged myself to be a very good Christian, and had not a doubt but, die when I would, I should be ever lastingly happy with God in His kingdom. When I was about eighteen years old, I fell in company with some people who had much conversa tion respecting the Methodists, against whom I was exceedingly prejudiced, believing them to be an ignorant, foolish, and wicked people: therefore I had not the least desire to be acquainted with them; nor had I so much curiosity as to wish to hear any of them preach, or to read any of their writings.
