Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method of Teaching Language in the Primary Grades The series of lessons in this Bulletin is the outcome of an attempt to make certain language forms matters of habit; that is, to so fix them that when the necessity for their use arises, the child need not go over in his mind any definition previously learned, nor think of any rule by which he could choose the correct form to be used. The general idea has been to get the attention upon the form first, and gradually to lead the child to the place where the subject-matter only is in mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Language in the Primary Grades: Supplement to the Sonoma County Course of Study, Adopted, June, 1904 The method used has been. To bring the proper setting before the child, either actually or in imagi nation. The teacher gives the proper form to be used, and the child imitates her by using the form. The best results will come if the attention of the child is exclusively upon the form we wish to teach him, without too much paraphernalia to divide that atten tion. To illustrate: The child is to be taught to use the form, I saw, in telling about something he has seen before. The teacher produces the proper condi tions by walking to the window, looking out at some object, then returning to her desk, and saying, I saw a man. The child then imitates her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language Games: A Method of Using Play for Establishing Correct Habits of Speech, in Primary Grades When the mother and other members of the family Circle first attempt to teach the baby to talk they approach him play fully, and common intuition tells us that their efforts would not succeed if they did not employ playful methods. These are the Child's first language lessons. The next come when he first ventures forth to the street and play-ground. Some astonishing things happen then in the way of language acquisi tion all kinds of language. Anxious parents and ambitious teachers wonder why the language of the play-ground is taken with so much greater avidity than that of the school class-room or the family circle. The explanation is simple. Play is the magic power. Nearly all growth in language power, whether with adults or with children, comes when the interest is very high. Hardly any gain is ever made through didactic teaching. With Children high interest means almost altogether play interest. When children go into their play activities they put into them the ut most initiative, originality and interest of which they are capable. That throws them wide open mind-open and heart-open and ready to receive. The language that they hear goes right home, finds lodgment and comes out again right away as their language. If we could analyze exhaustively the language content of the mind of a ten-year-old boy we would find little there that was not put there by play interest. If parents and teachers are to hold their own in their efforts at language teach ing, in competition with the play-ground, they must take their cue from the play-ground. That is what this little book has done. The method indicated in it succeeds; and it is the only method that I have ever known to meet with any degree of success in this field. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aldine Language Method, Vol. 2: A Manual for Teachers Using Second Language Book That these ends can really be achieved - and through exercises that make the language period the most natural and interesting instead of the most formal and the driest period in the day - is neither a theory nor a dream; it is a fact that has been accomplished with ever growing success, year after year, with hundreds of children - children of all thevarieties usually found in a city school system. The Aldine Language Books have not been made in the study by theorists; they are the outgrowth of more than fifteen years of thoughtfully supervised efforts in scores of classrooms, efiorts to teach chil dren to do correctly and well what they can scarcely avoid doing in some way to think and to feel, and to express their thoughts and feelings through language. The pupils' book, the A [fine Second Language Book, is entirely addressed to the pupil; the lan guage and style of the book is intelligible and inter esting to children. In using this book, children learn to study, acquire habits of independent thought and action, which are of more fundamental impor tance even than a knowledge of language.
