Book excerpt: "At a time when very urgent problems attend the safeguarding and securing of human liberty in the practical order an investigation of the metaphysical foundations of freedom is apt to be dismissed as an untimely and unprofitable bit of theorizing. However, the very urgency of the problems ought to prompt a willingness to examine and if necessary to revise our fundamental notion of what it means to be free. Inasmuch as freedom belongs to every spiritual being, an adequate understanding of its essence can be gained only from a study of freedom wherever it is found, namely, in God and in angels as well as in man. It is all too easy to confound human freedom with freedom as such, and to read into the notion of freedom the imperfections which happen to attend the human mode, without, however, recognizing them as limitations. Inadequacy of knowledge in this case amounts to positive error, for one of the most important facts about human freedom is its essentially limited and imperfect character. The thesis which this dissertation undertakes to establish, therefore, is that free will is not a univocal perfection proper to man, but a transcendent perfection of being, participating the analogical nature of being as an exercise of the act of to be. The metaphysical roots of liberty are sought in the doctrine of participation, which teaches that the perfections of created existence are deficient likenesses of the absolute perfections of the creator, in whom they exist essentially and without limit." --

Book Synopsis The Metaphysics of Being of St. Thomas Aquinas in a Historical Perspective by : Leo J. Elders
Download or read book The Metaphysics of Being of St. Thomas Aquinas in a Historical Perspective written by Leo J. Elders and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metaphysics, formerly the queen of science, fell into oblivion under the onslaught of empiricism and positivism and its very possibllity came to be denied. Professor Elders traces the history of this process and shows how St. Thomas innovated in determining both the subject of metaphysics and the manner in which one enters this science, particularly in the framework of his Aristotle commentaries. The work then considers being and its properties, its divisions into being in act and being in potency, into the act of being essence, and into substance and the accidents. Finally the causes of being are considered. The work also introduces and surveys the extensive literature of Thomas interpretation of the past 50 years.
