Book excerpt: The form of tin-glazed earthenware known as maiolica reveals much about the culture and spirit of Renaissance Italy. Engagingly decorative, often spectacularly colorful, sometimes whimsical or frankly bawdy, these magnificent objects, which were generally made for use rather than simple ornamentation, present a fascinating glimpse into the realities of daily life. Though not as well known as Renaissance painting and sculpture, maiolica is also prized by collectors and amateurs of the decorative arts the world over. This volume offers highlights of the world-class collection of maiolica at the Metropolitan Museum. It presents 135 masterpieces that reflect more than four hundred years of exquisite artistry, ranging from early pieces from Pesaro—including an eight-figure group of the Lamentation, the largest, most ambitious piece of sculpture produced in a Renaissance maiolica workshop—to everyday objects such as albarelli (pharmacy jars), bella donna plates, and humorous genre scenes. Each piece has been newly photographed for this volume, and each is presented with a full discussion, provenance, exhibition history, publication history, notes on form and glaze, and condition report. Two essays by Timothy Wilson, widely considered the foremost scholar in the field, provide overviews of the history and technique of maiolica as well as an account of the formation of The Met's collection. Also featured is a wide-ranging introduction by Luke Syson that examines how the function of an object governed the visual and compositional choices made by the pottery painter. As the latest volume in The Met's series of decorative arts highlights, Maiolica is an invaluable resource for scholars and collectors as well as an absorbing general introduction to a multifaceted subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio are the literary figures we associate with the transitional era between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in Italy. In art history, this time of artistic fertility is represented above all by the name Giotto, the great Florentine artist around whose work revolved the innovations in the visual arts in Italy, during the trecento, which shaped the course of Western art for centuries to follow. Italian cities flourished especially in the early decades of the century, as ambitious architectural projects were undertaken that demanded equally challenging decorative programs. Communal palaces and princely residences, new cathedrals and the spacious churches of the mendicant orders, all provided new tasks for painting, and especially for mural painting." "Italian Frescoes: The Age of Giotto, 1280-1400 illustrates in detail the inspired responses to this challenge by Giotto, his contemporaries, and his successors. They undertook a continuous artistic exploration of new ground - in terms of figurative and narrative style as well as in the shaping of pictorial space and use of color. After an introductory overview, the volume begins with an in-depth presentation of the frescoes at San Francesco in Assisi, which became, in the decades around 1300, the great school of Italian painting, where Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti, and Simone Martini, among others, created a new kind of painted mural and a new style of pictorial narrative. Expansive treatment is given as well to Giotto's masterful Arena Chapel in Padua, a touchstone of European art for writers and artists from Dante to Marcel Proust and from Ghiberti to Henri Matisse. Among the many other highlights of the volume are the chapels painted by Giotto, Taddeo Gaddi, Maso di Banco, Giovanni da Milano, and Agnolo Gaddi in the church of Santa Croce, Florence; Ambrogio Lorenzetti's monumental allegories of good and bad government in the Palazzo Pubblico, Siena; Buffalmacco's Triumph of Death and Last Judgment in Pisa's Camposanto; and, toward the end of the century, Altichiero's frescoes for the Saint George Chapel in Padua."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fourteenth century, garish ornaments, bright colors, gilt, and military effects helped usher in the age of fashion in Italy. Over a short span of years important matters began to turn on the cut of a sleeve. Fashion influenced consumption and provided a stimulus that drove demand for goods and turned wealthy townspeople into enthusiastic consumers. Making wise decisions about the alarmingly expensive goods that composed a fashionable wardrobe became a matter of pressing concern, especially when the market caught on and became awash in cheaper editions of luxury wares. Focusing on the luxury trade in fashionable wear and accessories in Venice, Florence, and other towns in Italy, Gilding the Market investigates a major shift in patterns of consumption at the height of medieval prosperity, which, more remarkably, continued through the subsequent era of plague, return of plague, and increased warfare. A fine sensitivity to the demands of "le pompe," that is, the public display of private wealth, infected town life. The quest for luxuries affected markets by enlarging exchange activity and encouraging retail trades. As both consumers and tradesmen, local goldsmiths, long-distance traders, bankers, and money changers played important roles in creating this new age of fashion. In response to a greater public display of luxury goods, civic sumptuary laws were written to curb spending and extreme fashion, but these were aimed at women, youth, and children, leaving townsmen largely unrestricted in their consumption. With erudition, grace, and an evocative selection of illustrations, some reproduced in full color, Susan Mosher Stuard explores the arrival of fashion in European history.

The domes and walls of the church, encrusted with stone, glass, and gold, have been recognized, over the centuries, as a glorious historical and artistic record. Peopled with hundreds and figures—Adam and Eve, Noah and his progeny, Isaiah, Christ, Mark, of course, and other holy men and women of Venice—these mosaics create a cosmic panorama. The Mosaic Decoration of San Marco, Venice brings these unrivaled mosaics into breathtaking focus, combining a descriptive history of their creation and repair over the ages with close-up photographs revealing their iconographic detail.
