Book Synopsis Merchant Mariners at War by : George J Billy
Download or read book Merchant Mariners at War written by George J Billy and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2008-09-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of cargo ships sailed in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of World War II manned by young men who braved blockades, torpedoes, and bombings to deliver vital supplies to the Allied forces and make victory possible. These mariners have received little if any credit; they are the forgotten group of "the greatest generation." Merchant Mariners at War offers firsthand accounts of the wartime experiences of veterans who graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy--the largest supplier of ships' officers in WWII. Gathered over more than a decade at the academy in Kings Point, New York, the interviews offer a unique portrait of the young officers who delivered the vital war materiel and provide a valuable window into the world of the merchant marine during WWII. The stories often include startling accounts of privation and endurance. Their stories give voice to a new perspective on WWII maritime history. Chapters cover such subjects as Liberty ships, U-Boats, the Battle of the Atlantic, D-Day, the Philippines, the vast Pacific, and the Murmansk Run. Throughout the book, interesting anecdotes from the veterans enliven the narrative and add to its contribution to the historical record--heretofore non-existent.

Download or read book Liberty's War written by Herman E. Melton and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the dark days of World War II, merchant mariners made heroic contributions to the eventual Allied victory and suffered tremendous casualties in so doing. Among these were the engineers who toiled deep in the bowels of the ship and suffered appalling casualties. After the war, engineering personnel were unlikely to talk about their experiences, let alone write them down. These modest and self-effacing men were more comfortable in a world of turbines and pistons, so they seldom brought their stories forward. Liberty’s War sets out to explore the experiences of one such engineer, Herman Melton, from his time as a cadet at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy through his experiences at sea as a third assistant engineer. Melton’s story is representative of the thousands of Merchant Marine engineers who served on board Liberty ships during the war. Like many young Americans, he sought to do his part, and in 1942 he obtained an appointment to the newly created U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. After graduating from the academy in 1944, he shipped out to the Pacific Theatre, surviving the sinking of his Liberty ship, the SS Antoine Saugrain, and its top-secret cargo.

Book excerpt: Political and Military Statements in Support of the Thousands of Merchant Mariners Including Those We Honor in This Book Braving the Wartime Seas “The Academy serves the Merchant Marine as West Point serves the Army and Annapolis serves the Navy . . .” (September 30, 1943, dedication of USMMA campus) President Franklin D. Roosevelt “The only thing that ever really frightened me during the war was the U-boat peril.” Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill “This is a hundredth gone. Too damned many of these fine lads gone. Wish there was more we could do to minimize losses.” Captain Richard R. McNulty, June 16, 1943 Note on report of death of a Cadet-Midshipman “They have brought us our lifeblood and they had paid for it with some of their own . . . they have delivered their cargoes to us who needed them so badly. In war it is performance that counts.” Quotes from Douglas MacArthur, General of the U.S. Army “Yours was the first front on every ocean, and without you, no Army and Navy can survive . . . one of the vital teams participating will be recognized as the merchant seamen in dungarees . . . we of the Navy will salute you with a final ‘Well done’.” Admiral Harold R. Stark, Commander of U.S. Naval Forces in Europe “Our operations would not have been possible without the strong support of our Merchant Marine. These gallant officers and men maintained a bridge of ships across the Pacific, and bore their share of the Japanese attacks while unloading on distant islands where the struggle was still intense and the issue not yet decided.” Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Navy, Chief of Naval Operations Braving the Wartime Seas is the final book of the American Maritime History Project, a private nonprofit foundation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the U.S. Merchant Marine has declined over the last several decades, so too has the memory of the countless acts of unflinching courage and patriotism performed by its civilian officers and seamen in America's armed struggles. Scouring long-out-of-print books and dusty archives, veteran writer and merchant marine officer Bruce Felknor has collected the most dramatic of these stories from all of America's wars through World War II into a single comprehensive illustrated volume. Excerpts from such authors as Winston Churchill, Samuel Eliot Morison, and Lowell Thomas are combined with eyewitness accounts - many never before published - by heroes, victims, and survivors.
Book Synopsis Heroes in Dungarees by : John Bunker
Download or read book Heroes in Dungarees written by John Bunker and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2006-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A World War II merchant seaman, John Bunker takes a thorough look at the American merchant marines' significant contributions to the war effort. There are plenty of fascinating facts about their extensive supply operations, but the focus of the book is on the men and their often-heroic actions. Bunker draws from his own experiences to describe the action at sea and also includes the personal stories of many other civilian participants. It is an engaging portrayal of the courage, bravery, and ingenuity demonstrated by these merchant seamen. All theaters of operation using U.S. merchant ships are covered; in addition, Bunker provides information on events before the country entered the war when efforts were being made to build more ships and to recruit the men necessary to crew the huge fleet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant Marine: A Necessity in Time of War; A Source of Independence and Strength in Time of Peace Through the long period I have spent in the naval service of the United States I have carefully studied the mercantile side Of the nation's ocean service, not only because it is of vital importance to the country's safety as an auxiliary of the Navy, but also because it is an instrument essential to the nation's wealth and to her usefulness among the peoples Of the world. My responsibilities as Director of Naval Operations during the World War brought me in close touch with the danger to which this country was exposed, in con sequence Of her lack of an adequate merchant marine. As our Allies also were anxious to get our soldiers to Europe, our need in this instance was supplied by their vessels. The consequences which will attend our neglect of the merchant service, should our safety de mand the transport of great bodies of troops across the Atlantic or Pacific, when no friendly ally is at hand to assist with its vessels, are not pleasant to contemplate. At present there is no lack of vessels, but their existence now is no assurance for our possible need at an indefinite and we trust distant future time when our rights may again have to be preserved by resort to arms.
