Book excerpt: This book focuses on the archaeology of the hunter-gatherer societies that inhabited Europe in the millennia between the Last Ice Age and the spread of agriculture, between 10,000 and 5,000 years ago. Traditionally viewed as a period of cultural stagnation, new data now demonstrate that this was a period of radical change and innovation. This was the period that witnessed the colonization of extensive new territory at high latitudes and high altitudes following postglacial climatic change, the development of seafaring, and the synthesis of the technological, economic, and social capabilities that underpinned the later development of agricultural and urban societies.

Excerpt: ...and diminution in numbers would not account for their total extinction, and we are inclined to attribute this to the entrance into the whole Neanderthal country of western Europe toward the close of Lower Palaeolithic times of a new and highly superior race. Archaeologists find traces of a new culture and industry in certain Mousterian stations preceding the disappearance of the typical Mousterian industry. Such a mingling is found in the valley of the Somme in northern France. From this scanty evidence we may infer that the new race competed for a time with the Neanderthals before they dispossessed them of their principal stations and drove them out of the country or killed them in battle. The Neanderthals, no doubt, fought with wooden weapons and with the stone-headed dart and spear, but there is no evidence that they possessed the bow and arrow. There is, on the contrary, some possibility that the newly arriving Cro-Magnon race may have been familiar with the bow and arrow, for a barbed arrow or spear head appears in drawings of a later stage of Cr6-Magnon history, the so-called Magdalenian. It is thus possible, though very far from being demonstrated, that when the Cro-Magnons entered western Europe, at the dawn of the Upper Palaeolithic, they were armed with weapons which, with their superior intelligence and physique, would have given them a very great advantage in contests with the Neanderthals. CHAPTER IV OPENING OF THE UPPER PALEOLITHIC--THE GRIMALDI RACE--ARRIVAL OF THE CRO-MAGNON RACE AND OF THE AURIGNACIAN INDUSTRY--GEOGRAPHIC AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS--MAMMALIAN LIFE--CHARACTERISTICS AND HABITS OF THE CROMAGNONS--DISTRIBUTION OF THE AURIGNACIAN INDUSTRY--THE BIRTH OF ART--ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE SOLUTREAN INDUSTRY--BRUNN...

Book excerpt: Old theories for the origins of domesticated animals and plants from the East and the spread of farming and husbandry in Europe have affected generations of archaeologists, resulting in several theories of migrations of populations. However, there is no evidence in the archaeological record of population movements from the East, while so far the contribution of the pre-Neolithic populations of the Aegean has been neglected. This book shows that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers developed a dense maritime network on the Aegean islands and contributed to the Neolithisation process, transferring domesticated species from the East to the Aegean through Cyprus. Their great specialization in fishing and long journeys was due to a tradition that had roots in the Palaeolithic period. This text is based on practical experience from excavations and surface surveys over the past 25 years in Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in the Aegean Basin and continental Greece.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book answers the question as to the origin of Early Man. Was he created by God or did he evolve through a long evolutionary process? Who was the first Early Man to live on this Earth? What did he look like? Was he half ape and half man? Paleo archaeologists believe it is possible to trace Early Man back from about 2 to 3 million years ago to a more recent time when he could be truly called Early Man. Is it possible that Adam & Eve were the first man and woman that can truly be called Early Man? The science of archaeology and anthropology would have us believe that Early Man was a Stone Age person. He is often related to the Old Stone Age, the Middle Stone Age and the New Stone Age periods. He is often referred to as the Palaeolithic Man, the Mesolithic Man and the Neolithic Man. What were the great accomplishments of Early Man? Is it possible that the mysterious, megalithic and colossal stone and pyramidal structures that are present in various parts of the earth were constructed by Early Man? What type of stone tools did he manufacture? Who was Modern Man? When did he appear on this Earth? Is there a gap in time that separates Early Man from Modern Man? How is it possible to relate Early Man throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North and South America to Modern Day Man? This book reveals how it is possible to Bridge the Gap between Early Man and Modern Man. To find the answer you must read this book? Volume Two is a sequel to Volume One entitled, Bridging the Gap: The First 6 Days. Volume One bridges the gap between the origin and history of the Earth about 4.6 billion years ago to the time of Early Man. It also reveals the astounding relationship that exists between the record of geology and the Biblical record of the earth throughout this vast period of time. Both books are a must to read. The Author brings the History of Early Man and the Old Testament account into focus in a very logical way, so that we in the present feel a real connection to the past. This organized information is extremely helpful in adding to the wonder of the Creators Plan for Mankind. W. Gerry Loewen, BA (Econ), LLB Linking contemporary earth science knowledge with mans ancient beginnings is an engaging story. This book is for you if youve ever wondered how the Bible and science can be complementary. This book is for you if youve ever wondered about the origin of our earth, its hidden secrets and its early inhabitants. Cheryl Miller B.Ed. MAL Administrator Glenmore Christian Academy The science of Archaeology and anthropology would have us believe that Early Man has evolved from a certain ape ancestry.
