He soon learns that the rules agreed among the self-appointed British laird settlers include giving guns to their assignees to clear away the Australians. On station are squatter and wife, an overseer and his manservant, three other shepherds on an outstation run, all of whom have also crossed over Bass Strait. Wife has a black housemaid who speaks English; she is the most prized hand on station, BrownJudy, a London-flash name given her by the ex-con. In conversations in his hut after dinner she tells about the creeds and customs of the people he is being paid to murder ¿

This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Hardy Vaux (born 1782) was an English-born convict transported to Australia on three separate occasions. He was the author of Memoirs of James Hardy Vaux including A Vocabulary of the Flash Language, first published in 1819, which is regarded as both the first full length autobiography and first dictionary written in Australia. Whilst banished to the Newcastle penal settlement for much of the period from 1811 to 1818, Vaux compiled two works. The first was a dictionary of 'flash' or cant language originally written for use by the commandant of the penal settlement in performing his magisterial duties. An edited edition by Simon Barnard was republished in 2019 as James Hardy Vaux's 1819 Dictionary of Criminal Slang.

Book Synopsis Yann Tiersen - Kerber by : Yann Tiersen
Download or read book Yann Tiersen - Kerber written by Yann Tiersen and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Piano Solo Songbook). "I think there is a similarity between the infinite big and the infinite smallness of everything," says Yann Tiersen. "It's the same experiment looking through a microscope as it is a telescope." Named after a chapel in a small village on the island of Ushant, Kerber marks a new chapter in critically-acclaimed composer Yann Tiersen's career. A chapter still true to Tiersen's nuanced and subtle approach but one that sets out with his most overtly electronic material to date. Beautifully textured, highly immersive and thoughtfully constructed, Tiersen creates an electronic world, providing an environment in which the piano source exists. A sense of place has often been a central theme in Tiersen's work and here that is no different. Each track is tied to a place mapping out the immediate landscape that surrounds Tiersen's home, linking back to his thoughts on the possibilities of the infinite smallness. This official, exclusive folio is beautifully printed on high-quality, uncoated paper with striking graphic artwork. All seven pieces are presented for solo piano and follow an exclusive introduction to the project.

Book Synopsis W.H. Downing's Digger Dialects by : Walter Hubert Downing
Download or read book W.H. Downing's Digger Dialects written by Walter Hubert Downing and published by New York. This book was released on 1990 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digger Dialects is a unique record of one of Australian English's most creative and crowded hours. The words and phrases used by Australian personnel in World War I were noted in 1919 by W.H.Downing and are presented here with editorial comments and additions. Words which have new meanings or wider applications are frozen as they were in 1919; words which meant something at that time mean little now and need to be explained. The editors of this volume describe how the phrase going into cold storage meant to be killed in the winter of 1916; how kangaroo feathers was a jocular name for the emu plumes worn by members of the Australian Light Horse Brigade. The book is enhanced by 100 illustrations, drawn from field or troopship magazines, which aim to provide something of the spirit and flavour of the times.
Download or read book Post-everything written by Herman Paul and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-07-17 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Postmodern, postcolonial and post-truth are broadly used terms. But where do they come from? When and why did the habit of interpreting the world in post-terms emerge? And who exactly were the ‘post boys’ responsible for this? Post-everything examines why post-Christian, post-industrial and post-bourgeois were terms that resonated, not only among academics, but also in the popular press. It delves into the historical roots of postmodern and poststructuralist, while also subjecting more recent post-constructions (posthumanist, postfeminist) to critical scrutiny. This study is the first to offer a comprehensive history of post-concepts. In tracing how these concepts found their way into a broad range of genres and disciplines, Post-everything contributes to a rapprochement between the history of the humanities and the history of the social sciences.
