Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Melvill Family: A Roll of Honour of the Descendants of Captain Philip Melvill, Lieut.-Governor of Pendennis Castle, and Their Immediate Connections by Marriage, in the Years of the World War, 1914 1918 Mclvill, Lieut. - Governor of Pendennis Castle, Cornwall. It has become a fairly complete record of what the members of the family did during the War, as far as it has been possible to collect the information. To unite these four branches of the Mclvill family it was deemed desirable to go back to a near common ancestor. Though no family tree is attempted, this being beyond the scope of the record, Key Pedigrees dating from Captain Philip Mclvill (b. 1760, d. 1811) have been introduced, so no difficulty should be experienced in tracing how each member is connected. Download or read book Singapore Burning written by Colin Smith and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-05-04 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Churchill's description of the fall of Singapore on 15 February 1942, after Lt-Gen Percival's surrender led to over 100,000 British, Australian and Indian troops falling into the hands of the Japanese, was no wartime exaggeration. The Japanese had promised that there would be no Dunkirk in Singapore, and its fall led to imprisonment, torture and death for thousands of allied men and women. With much new material from British, Australian, Indian and Japanese sources, Colin Smith has woven together the full and terrifying story of the fall of Singapore and its aftermath. Here, alongside cowardice and incompetence, are forgotten acts of enormous heroism; treachery yet heart-rending loyalty; Japanese compassion as well as brutality from the bravest and most capricious enemy the British ever had to face.

Book Synopsis The Royal Navy, China Station: 1864 - 1941 by : Jonathan Parkinson
Download or read book The Royal Navy, China Station: 1864 - 1941 written by Jonathan Parkinson and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive history of the Royal Navy’s China Station. In the The Navy List for April 1864 the China Station was first shown as a separate Royal Navy Station . It remained as such until the outbreak of the Pacific War in December 1941 which was to signal the end of that era. In addition to a precis of the lives and naval careers of each of the Commanders in Chief of the China Station, this volume also gives relevant information outlining something of the concurrent internal affairs of China and Japan. Both are very different but sad tales, the former in decline towards the end of the Manchu Ch’ing dynasty and then into the chaotic 1920’s and 1930’s, and the latter increasingly adopting a militaristic attitude which was to result in their disaster of the Pacific War of 1941-1945. As a reminder of these days long gone are interwoven brief references to the British Consular Service. This is especially relevant for China, and for a shorter period for Japan during that era of extraterritoriality. Mention is also made of the British Colonial Service with whom, necessarily, the Navy worked very closely. In addition, being one important reason for it all, frequent references are made to a few British shipping and trading interests together with those of some other nations. All of these areas are linked together to give a definitive history of this very important Royal Navy Station.

Book Synopsis The Cornish Overseas by : Philip Payton
Download or read book The Cornish Overseas written by Philip Payton and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 773 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully revised and up-dated edition of The Cornish Overseas, Philip Payton draws upon almost two decades of additional research undertaken by historians the world over since the first paperback version of this book was published in 2005. Now published by University of Exeter Press, this edition of Philip Payton’s classic history of Cornwall’s ‘great emigration’ takes account of numerous new sources to present a comprehensive, definitive picture of the Cornish diaspora. The Cornish Overseas begins by identifying some of the classic themes of Cornish emigration history, including Cornwall’s ‘emigration culture’ and ‘emigration trade’, and goes on to sketch early Cornish settlement in North America and Australia. The book then examines in detail the upsurge in Cornish emigration after 1815, showing how Cornwall became swiftly one of the great emigration regions of Europe. Discoveries of silver, copper and gold drew Cornish miners to Latin America, while Cornish agriculturalists were attracted to the United States and Canada. The discoveries of copper in South Australia and in Michigan during the 1840s offered new destinations for the emigrant Cornish, as did the Californian gold rush in 1849 and the Victorian gold rush in Australia in 1851. The crash of copper-mining in Cornwall in 1866 sped further waves of emigrants to countries as disparate as New Zealand and South Africa. In each of these places the Cornish remained distinctive as ‘Cousin Jacks’ and ‘Cousin Jennys’, establishing their own communities and making important contributions to the social, political and economic development of the new worlds. By 1914, however, Cornwall was no longer the international centre of mining expertise, the mantle having passed to America, Australia and South Africa, and Cornish emigration had dwindled as a result. Nonetheless, the Cornish at home and abroad remained aware of their global transnational identity, an identity that has been revitalised in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
