Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morningside, Vol. 3: October 3, 1898 Yet, for all the crowd, there was one soldier in one of the front cars who seemed to have no share in the profuse chorus of farewell. He was a great, broad-shouldered fellow, with a shock of curly, light-brown hair, and a face good-natured, ruddy and rather full. He kept peering anxiously down the platform as if expecting some one. Then suddenly his face lighted Up with gratification. For a tall, dark young man, dressed neatly in blue serge, was edging his way swiftly through the crowd. Sweeping with his eyes the long line of faces in the cars he hastened up to where the friend he was seeking beckoned to him from the window. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Allerlei, 1898, Vol. 7 AS regards the merit of the Allerlei for 1897, a certain modesty, all our own, prevents our expressing an opinion. The bear remarked to its offspring one day: You are a handsome cub, whereupon the cub became straightway inflated with pride and called everybody's attention to him self, but only to have it discovered that there was really nothing handsome about him, - which is a fable, but not according to zesop, the moral whereof is that it is a good thing not to be a handsome bear-cub, nor yet a vain Allerlei. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pot-Pourri, 1898, Vol. 6 Cribbing is a custom found almost everywhere, and there are various methods of treating it, more or less successful - but principally less. In this school it has been the Custom for boys to sever their connection with the school by being caught cribbing. That being caught condition is what keeps the school from disband ing, for it is hard to find boys who will not crib when pressed, or who, at least, will not give assistance to neighbors in distress. While we heartily condemn the dishonesty and Short-sightedness of the boy who cribs, and the cowardice of him who helps another for fear of being thought ungenerous, we are inclined to hold the methods of the Faculty responsible for the great extent of this foolishness. For an instructor to sneak around the room on tip-toe during an examination, or even to watch from the desk, is to assume the responsibility of the class's hon esty, and is as much as to dare the boys to crib. Then the class feels no restraint, and the very risk is fascinating. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Philippines were declared an American Territory on January 4, 1899, and fortification construction soon began on the islands in the mouth of Manila Bay. Among the sites built were Fort Mills (Corregidor), Fort Frank, and the formidable "concrete battleship" of Fort Drum. The defenses suffered constant Japanese bombardment during World War II, leading to the surrender of American forces. In 1945 the forts were manned by Japanese soldiers determined to hold out to the bitter end. This title details the fortifications of this key strategic location, and considers both their effectiveness and historical importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Black and Gold, Vol. 4: November, 1913 I) sion, it began to look as if it were going to rain. The storm burst in full blast as we reached the stables. Jim said that we would have to drive in the shelter. He turned the horses toward the stables and I closed my eyes for fear I'd see a ghost somewhere around the old place. We drove the horses under the shed of the barn, as this was not so likely to fall down. Night came on and still the ram came down in torrents. We were wet and cold; so I proposed going to the house and making a fire. We decided that it would be just as well to see a few ghosts as to freeze to death. Then, too, we had a desire to explore the old house, which everybody was afraid to go near. We wrapped ourselves in two blankets, which we had brought as beds, and set out for the house, taking some boards, which we found in the stable and our lantern.
