Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Meeting-Place of Geology and History The object of this little book is to give a clear and accurate statement of facts bearing on the character of the debatable ground intervening between the later part of the geological record and the beginnings of sacred and secular history. The subject is one as yet full of difficulty; but the materials for its treatment have been rapidly accumulating, and it is hoped that it may prove possible to render it more interesting and intelligible than heretofore. Book excerpt: Sir John William Dawson was a renowned Canadian geologist and naturalist, and this book presents his insights on the interaction between the natural world and human history. Drawing on examples from around the world, Dawson explores how geological and environmental factors have shaped the course of human civilization, and offers a unique perspective on the interplay between science and culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Igneous Rocks The following page are, in substance, a course of lectures delivered at Cambridge; and, in offering them to a larger audience, the general plan of treatment has been retained. Igneous action and igneous rocks are first considered from a purely geological standpoint. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. The middle portion of the book deals with the crystallization of igneous rock-magmas, regarded as complex solutions. Although the subject is one which might be more skilfully handled by a professed chemist, a presentation of it as it appears to a petrologist may be not less useful to the student. I have in the main followed Professor Vogt, whose writings in the last few years have thrown so much light upon the matter. Some of the questions briefly and tentatively touched in the concluding chapters are of a more speculative character, but so fundamental in their scope that they could not be passed over in silence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Historical Geology With Special Reference to North America IT is the author's h0pe that this book may find a place as a class-book dealing with the historical geology portion of a one-year course in general geology, and that it may also serve as a text for special courses in historical geology. An elementary knowledge of what is generally comprised under dynamical and structural geology is presupposed. It is assumed that a proper amount of laboratory and field work will be pursued in connection with the text. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Geologic History of the Floridian Plateau This paper is the outgrowth of my association with two organiza tions, the United States Geological Survey and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. As Geologist in charge of Coastal Plain Investiga tions of the former organization, I have had unusual opportunities to familiarize myself with the geology of Florida, supplementing my previous field work in the State by several additional trips. I super vised and participated in the preparation of a report on the stratigraphic geology and a geologic map of the State, done in cooperation between the United States Geological Survey and the Florida State Survey, by Messrs. George Charlton Matson, Frederick G. Clapp, and Samuel San ford. I have therefore had at my disposal not only the results of my personal work for the Geological Survey, but also those of Messrs. Matson, Clapp, and Sanford. The information derived from my association with the United States Geological Survey is here utilized with the permission of the Director of that Bureau, and my hearty thanks are extended to him for the privilege. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cooling Globe: Or the Mechanics of Geology The two memoirs herewith presented to scholars and thinkers, and intended to be permanent contributions to knowledge, were read before the Boston Society of Nat ural History: the first, at the meeting of Oct. 5, 1859; the last, at the meeting of J an. 4, 1865. The geological proposition which I have attempted to demonstrate is, that the globe, when first giving birth to life and rudimentary forms, was much larger in all its diameters than now. When walking in darkness, we step timidly. When the sun rises, we tread boldly. NO doubts now remain in my mind upon the important subject involved in the subsequent discussions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Meeting of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists, Held in Washington, May, 1844 Prof. Frederick Hall possessed great ardor in the pursuit of knowl edge, and was one of the earliest cultivators in this country of geology and mineralogy. He was educated at Dartmouth College, became pro feasor of natural philosophy and chemistry in Middlebury College, and afterwards president of Mount Hope College in Maryland, and at the time of his death (which took place at Peoria, Ill.) was professor of chemistry in the medical department of Columbia College, Washington. Of a generous and enthusiastic nature, he manifested the sincerity of his zeal for science and the cause of education, by the very handsome contribution in money and a rich cabinet, which he made a few years ago in aid of the establishment of a new professorship in the respected institution from which he imbibed his strong love for learning. Though not a practical geologist, he was a successful teacher of the science, evinced a lively interest in its advancement, and earnestly encouraged this our present effort to promote its progress in our country. Mr. Nicollet was born in Savoy between Geneva and Mont Blanc. Repairing to Paris about the age of twenty, he applied himself with great enthusiasm to improve, through the resources of that capital, the defects of his early education, and gifted with a fine mathematical ability, and enjoying the lessons and friendship of Laplace, he soon rose to distino tion as a mathematician and astronomer. In his assiduous devotion to his favorite branches, he became the author of several works of merit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Anniversary Address Before the Association of American Geologists: At Their Second Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, April 5, 1841 In the first place, these phenomena must have been the result of some very general force, or forces, Operating in the same gen eral direction; that is, southerly or southeasterly. For in a southerly direction has the drift been so uniformly carried, and the furrows and scratches on the rocks so generally point south erly, that the force which produced these effects must have tend ed thither. Our valleys have, indeed, considerably modified the course of the drift; but not enough to contradict the general statement. It would be strange if careful examination should not discover here, as in the Alps and in Great Britain, that the moving force had sometimes been exerted outwardly from the axes of high mountains. But I am not aware that as yet any facts Of importance in favor of such an opinion, have been brought to light. At any rate, the evidence of a force urging detritus and bowlders m a southerly, or more strictly in a southeasterly direction, is too marked, and has been noticed by too many inde pendent observers, over a breadth of nearly two thousand miles, to be doubted even though local exceptions should be discover ed - and such a uniformity of direction over so vast an area, in dicates a very general agency. Secondly, this agency has operated at all altitudes, from the present sea level, and probably beneath it, to the height of three thousand or four thousand feet. In New England, most Of our hills and mountains, not excepting insulated peaks, not higher than three thousand feet, are distinctly smoothed and furrowed on their tops and northern slopes, and upon their east and west flanks, to the bottom of the lowest valleys. Dr. Jackson sup poses he has found transported detritus on Mount Katahdin, four thousand feet high. But he could discover no marks of this action at the summit of the White mountains of New Hampshire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Colorado Ore Deposits This treatise contains the substance of a series of elementary lectures delivered by the author to the students of the Colorado State School of Mines. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with any idea of offer ing original matter for the discussion of the scientific few. The materials are derived partly from the writer's own researches, and largely from the most reliable resources available to him, such as the standard text-books and the valuable published reports of the United States Geological Survey. The writer having for a time been connected with that survey, knows full well how high a value is to be attached to those reports, which must remain for all time as a standard of reference for those interested in the geological relations of the mines of Colorado. The first part of the work contains a rough sketch of general Geology, for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms used in this science. The sketch is further applied to the local geology of Colorado. The second part refers to the phe domena of veins and ores, and their surroundings, as illustrated by Colorado.
