Book excerpt: Despite the growing body of work on the media in Wales, very little exists on the history of commercial television in Wales. This book seeks to address this imbalance by tracing the growth and development of ITV in Wales and assessing its contribution to the life of the nation. ITV has been a powerful force in British broadcasting since its inception in 1955. When commercial television came to Wales for the first time in 1958, it immediately got caught up in with matters of national identity, language and geography. Compared with the BBC, it is a relative newcomer; its growth was slower than that of the BBC and it took until 1962 to complete the network across the UK. Once it had arrived, however, its impact was considerable. The book will provide an historical narrative and critical analysis of independent television (ITV) in Wales from 1958 up until the present day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of the Welsh-language can come as a surprise to those who assume that English is the foundation language of Britain. However, J. R. R. Tolkien described Welsh as the 'senior language of the men of Britain'. Visitors from outside Wales may be intrigued by the existence of Welsh and will want to find out how a language which has, for at least fifteen hundred years, been the closest neighbour of English, enjoys such vibrancy, bearing in mind that English has obliterated languages thousands of miles from the coasts of England. This book offers a broad historical survey of Welsh-language culture from sixth-century heroic poetry to television and pop culture in the early twenty-first century. The public status of the language is considered and the role of Welsh is compared with the roles of other of the non-state languages of Europe. This new edition of The Welsh Language offers a full assessment of the implications of the linguistic statistics produced by the 2011 Census. The volume contains maps and plans showing the demographic and geographic spread of Welsh over the ages, charts examining the links between words in Welsh and those in other Indo-European languages, and illustrations of key publications and figures in the history of the language. It concludes with brief guides to the pronunciation, the dialects and the grammar of Welsh.

Rees told the US House of Representatives that ‘very little has been written of what the Welsh have contributed in all walks of life in the shaping of American history’. This book is the first systematic attempt to both recount and evaluate the considerable yet undervalued contribution made by Welsh immigrants and their immediate descendants to the development of the United States. Their lives and achievements are set within a narrative outline of American history that emphasises the Welsh influence upon the colonists’ rejection of British rule, and upon the establishment, expansion and industrialisation of the new American nation. This book covers both the famous and the unsung who worked and fought to acquire greater prosperity and freedom for themselves and for their nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After outlining conventional accounts of Wales in the High Middle Ages, this book moves to more radical approaches to its subject. Rather than discussing the emergence of the March of Wales from the usual perspective of the ‘intrusive’ marcher lords, for instance, it is considered from a Welsh standpoint explaining the lure of the March to Welsh princes and its contribution to the fall of the native principality of Wales. Analysis of the achievements of the princes of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries focuses on the paradoxical process by which increasingly sophisticated political structures and a changing political culture supported an autonomous native principality, but also facilitated eventual assimilation of much of Wales into an English ‘empire’. The Edwardian conquest is examined and it is argued that, alongside the resultant hardship and oppression suffered by many, the rising class of Welsh administrators and community leaders who were essential to the governance of Wales enjoyed an age of opportunity. This is a book that introduces the reader to the celebrated and the less well-known men and women who shaped medieval Wales.

Book excerpt: This text commences with the opening of the Cardiff BBC station in February 1923 and ends with a consideration of the impact of the reforms of John Birt in the early 1990s. It portrays the tension between Head Office and the regions which has characterized the Corporation from the beginning. The role of the Directors General from Reith onwards is examined, with extensive quotations from the archives at Caversham and Llandaf. Considerable attention is given to the war years when the Welsh region was the only part of the BBC to produce a significant number of programmes for its own listeners. separate radio service for Wales, were exactly replicated with the coming of television. The establishment of the television service - BBC Wales - is discussed in some detail, as is the way in which Controller Wales used the advent of commercial television to extract concessions from Head Office. Welsh-language television are a major theme of the second half of the book. The government's decision, in 1979, to renege on its promise concerning the Welsh Fourth channel led to Gwynfor Evans's threat to fast to death and to Whitelaw's change of policy - a rare U-turn by the Thatcher government. The continuing role of sound broadcasting is stressed, as is the significance of the establishment of Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. Wales, it is constantly concerned to emphasize what broadcasting is fundamentally about: people listening to and viewing programmes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How will local media deal with the challenge of the Internet? How important is regional news to the nations of the UK? What does the future hold for newspapers, regional television and local radio news? Most adults in the UK read a local newspaper; regional news bulletins are among the most-watched on television; and local radio has a loyal following. This is hardly surprising as, for most people, the everyday activities of life take place within familiar local territory. Even though the majority of political and economic decisions affecting daily life are taken far away and are shaped by global processes, their impact is experienced locally. Local media are vital if there is to be an effective arena for informed debate about these issues. But despite being both popular and politically important, local media are often overlooked on media-related courses and in discussions of the role of the media in contemporary society. Understanding the Local Media addresses this gap by explaining how regional newspapers and broadcast news are owned, regulated and organized; how these factors produce the outputs we see and hear; what we know of audiences’ attitude to them; and discusses local media as places of work. Meryl Aldridge brings issues alive by the extensive use of real examples and offers a fascinating insight into this media sector for students and teachers on academic and professional media courses. It also provides stimulating reading for anyone interested in UK media today.
