Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanism of Man: An Answer to the Question What Am I?, Vol. 2: A Popular Introduction to Mental Physiology and Psychology; The Mechanism in Action This characteristic presents itself turn where we may in the exploration of Nature. The normal action is always so complete and equable, the co-ordination of parts is so perfect, that we can see little more than results and are almost unconscious of the processes by which they are brought about. The Physician stud ing for years the action of the healthy body coul learn but little of its internal mechanism and of the functions of its various organs. He will procure more Of this knowledge in a few hours Of Observation by the bedside of the sick, when the organs are not working in harmony and their functions are imperfectly performed, when the human mechanism is out of gear, than in as many years of observation Of the healthy body or even of the lifeless form - for anatomy does not reveal function. Book Synopsis The Mechanism of Human Facial Expression by : G. -B. Duchenne de Boulogne
Download or read book The Mechanism of Human Facial Expression written by G. -B. Duchenne de Boulogne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mecanisme de la Physionomie Humaine, the great nineteenth-century French neurologist Duchenne de Boulogne combined his intimate knowledge of facial anatomy with his skill in photography and expertise in using electricity to stimulate individual facial muscles to produce a fascinating interpretation of the ways in which the human face portrays emotions. This book was pivotal in the development of psychology and physiology as it marked the first time that photography had been used to illustrate, and therefore "prove," a series of experiments. Duchenne's book, which contained over 100 original photographic prints pasted into an accompanying Album, was rare, even when it first appeared in 1862. Duchenne was a superb clinical neurologist and in this study he applied his enormous experience in neurological research to the question of the mechanism of human facial expression. Duchenne has been little cited and little known in this century; his book has been virtually unobtainable, and copies are available in only a few libraries in the United States and Europe.

Download or read book The Mechanism written by Vladimir Netto and published by Random House. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION BY MISHA GLENNY, author of McMafia A gripping narrative of power, corruption and greed, The Mechanism is the true story of how a simple investigation into money laundering uncovered the biggest corruption scandal in human history. When a small team of investigators discovered that a black market currency dealer was operating out of a Brazilian petrol station, they could never have imagined that their work would destroy the government and lead to the impeachment of two presidents. As the trail leads further and further into the centre of power, the search for the truth and pursuit of justice become ever more crucial. Taut and riveting, with more plot twists than the most compelling political thriller, The Mechanism is an essential work of non-fiction that exposes the rottenness caused when politicians and big businesses believe they are above the law.

Book Synopsis Beyond Mechanism by : Brian G. Henning
Download or read book Beyond Mechanism written by Brian G. Henning and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said that new discoveries and developments in the human, social, and natural sciences hang “in the air” (Bowler, 1983; 2008) prior to their consummation. While neo-Darwinist biology has been powerfully served by its mechanistic metaphysic and a reductionist methodology in which living organisms are considered machines, many of the chapters in this volume place this paradigm into question. Pairing scientists and philosophers together, this volume explores what might be termed “the New Frontiers” of biology, namely contemporary areas of research that appear to call an updating, a supplementation, or a relaxation of some of the main tenets of the Modern Synthesis. Such areas of investigation include: Emergence Theory, Systems Biology, Biosemiotics, Homeostasis, Symbiogenesis, Niche Construction, the Theory of Organic Selection (also known as “the Baldwin Effect”), Self-Organization and Teleodynamics, as well as Epigenetics. Most of the chapters in this book offer critical reflections on the neo-Darwinist outlook and work to promote a novel synthesis that is open to a greater degree of inclusivity as well as to a more holistic orientation in the biological sciences.
