Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanical Properties of Wood Although intended primarily as a textbook for students of wood technology and forest utilization, this book has been written with the hope that it may also find use as a source of information for others desiring a knowledge of the technical properties of wood. In serving this objective, comprehensive tables presenting fundamental strength and related properties for more than one hundred and fifty American woods as well as tables of recommended basic and working-stress values for structural species have been incorporated in the text. Examples illustrating the derivation and application of stress values are provided. The treatment of certain phases of the text, especially those dealing with factors affecting the strength of wood and with working stresses and the basis for grading rules for structural lumber, has been made as complete as possible in the space available. An attempt has been made to avoid unnecessary technical language and descriptions, so that it may be understood by all those interested in wood. The preparation of this book was suggested by Dean George A. Garratt whose work of the same title, published in 1931, is well known in the field of wood technology. Although the present publication is based on Garratt's Mechanical Properties of Wood, subsequent developments in timber mechanics and timber engineering and the increase in knowledge relating to the effects of various factors on the properties of wood have necessitated extensive revision. The arrangement and method of treatment of its predecessor are retained, but the presentation of much of the subject matter is entirely new. Part 1 deals with stress and strain relationships of wood, an appreciation of which is essential to an understanding of its mechanical behavior. Much of the discussion in this section is elementary mechanics of materials in general, although it is written with special reference to wood. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Moisture Upon the Strength, and Stiffness of Wood The investigations of the mechanical properties of wood by the Forest Service are being carried out by several timber-testing stations, in cooperation with the University of California, Purdue University, the University of Oregon, the University of Washington, and the Yale Forest School. The general aim of these tests is not only to supply useful informa tion for engineers and architects, but also to determine the useful qualities and values for specific purposes of quick-growing woods, thus promoting the practice of conservative forest management, and to determine proper substitutes for material which is more valuable for uses other than those for which it is now employed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties and Uses of Wood In this book an attempt is made to present in as non - technical a manner as is consistent with clearness and accuracy, the more important facts concerning the properties of wood and how these properties affect its utilization. Of late years there has been considerable demand for more definite information concerning timber than ordinarily can be obtained in practice or in the trade. Instead of general Opinions and impressions as to strength, shrinkage, durability, etc. The lumber manufacturer, dealer, and user want the results of carefully conducted tests. This desire for more information is prompted largely by the increasing price of lumber which is due principally to the rapid depletion of our forests. A large part of the information contained herein has resulted from researches of the Forest Products Laboratory maintained by the United States Forest Service in Cooperation with the Uni versity of Wisconsin. This Laboratory is the largest and best equipped of its kind in the world. During its fourteen years of existence it has accumulated a vast fund of facts and data con cerning wood. To get this information together, condense the more important matter and leave out much of the detail, though interesting and valuable, was no small task. Throughout the volume the author has constantly striven for accuracy in so far as it was possible to obtain accurate data. In some cases the data presented are old or based on a meager number of tests, but they are in every case the latest and most authentic available. In many cases references are given so that the reader may follow up the subject if he chooses, but no attempt is made to give a complete bibliography of any subject. Only the more important and available publications have, as a rule, been cited. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber: An Elementary Discussion of the Characteristics and Properties of Wood The furniture maker, who bestows a maximum amount of work on his material, needs a wood that combines strength, and sometimes toughness, with beauty and hardness, that takes a good polish, keeps joint, and does not easily indent. It must not warp or shrink when once in place, but it need not be light or soft or insect proof or abundant in any one kind, and in large dimensions, nor yet particularly cheap. Book excerpt: Excerpt: ... used only for tension and cleavage tests, consists of a steel cage above the movable crosshead and rests directly upon the weighing platform. The top of the cage contains a square hole into which one end of the test specimen may be clamped, the crosshead containing a similar clamp for the other end, in making tension tests. For testing long beams a special form of machine with an extended platform is used. (See Fig. 29 .) The weighing platform rests upon knife edges carried by primary levers of the weighing apparatus, the fulcrum being on the bed of the machine, and any pressure upon it is directly transmitted through a series of levers to the weighing beam. This beam is adjusted by means of a poise running on a screw. In operation the beam is kept floating by means of another poise moved back and forth by a screw which is operated by a hand wheel or automatically. The larger units of stress are read from the graduations along the side of the beam, while the intermediate smaller weights are observed on the dial on the rear end of the beam. The machine is driven by power from a shaft or a motor and is so geared that various speeds are obtainable. One man can operate it. In making tests the operation of the straining screws is always downward so as to bring pressure to bear upon the weighing platform. For tests in tension and cleavage the specimen is placed between the top of the stationary cage and the movable head and subjected to a pull. For tests in transverse bending, compression, and cleavage the specimen is placed between the movable head and the platform, and a direct compression force applied. Testing machines are usually calibrated to a portion of their capacity before leaving the factory. The delicacy of the weighing levers is verified by determining the number of pounds necessary to move the beam between the stops while a load of 1,000 pounds rests on the platform. The usual requirement is that ten pounds should accomplish this movement....
