Book excerpt: If you want to get to the NEXT LEVEL, you need to know what the recruiters are looking at, and this book will guide you down the right path. The Book on Evaluating Football Players contains the ingredients for the formula that Baxter has put together through the years from talking to hundreds of college coaches and recruiters about what they are looking for and from his own background in evaluating from a coaching perspective with a sports science background. Football recruiting is big business for not only the colleges but for the players as well. While the value of a football scholarship varies based on factors like school and in-state versus out-of-state tuitions, you can be assured that it is worth anywhere from $80K to $200K. When you factor in "projected earnings" for players who would not have gotten an education without football, you could be looking at a value that easily exceeds one million dollars. So what does it take to get that scholarship? What is it that those coaches are looking at when they go through their evaluations to decide whether you are worthy of not only playing for their program but are worth the value of what they are going to be giving you in terms of education? Coach Jim Baxter is a nationally published football recruiting analyst with more than two decades of experience in the business of evaluating talent. The network of coaches who call on him for his evaluations and/or opinions on players is large and covers the entire country.

Maybe you see yourself playing for the Texas Longhorns or the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. For every high school senior who wants to play football for a school like the Florida Gators, there are thousands of other athletes who will be competing to achieve the same dream. There are more than 1.2 million kids playing football on the high school level. However, only about 3,000 high school football players each year get to sign a national letter of intent to play for a Division I (FBS) University and another 2,300 at the Division I-AA (FCS) level. This constitutes less than 1% of high school students who are offered that elusive football scholarship. Because of these odds, even talented players like you need an advantage. To make yourself standout from the rest of the field, you need to know how to market yourself to a university, interact with their coaching staff and ensure that you are doing the right things off the field to get the best scholarship opportunities available. By compiling advice from college coaches, communication experts, as well as scholarship athletes, this in-depth book is a “how to” manual that puts you in the best position to earn a college football scholarship. Talent is a necessity, but it takes the right strategy to propel an athlete to the next level. By following this easy step-by-step guide, you will be well on your way to earning that coveted football scholarship.

Book excerpt: Strength and conditioning professionals spend a great deal of time and effort trying to improve athletic performance. Even as coaches evaluate each athlete by using the results of a vast battery of tests, there has been considerable speculation and discussion about the physical attributes of Division I football players and their playing status. The purpose of this study was to determine what influence strength, power, and performance tests scores have on an individual's playing status. The Skill group results indicate that power is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Simultaneously, the Combo group results indicate that speed is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters. Also, the L.O.S. group results indicate that bodyweight is the most important factor differentiating between starters and non-starters.

Book excerpt: It is argued that the most important part of collegiate athletics is recruiting successful studentathletes. Collegiate athletes are different than the general student population in that they have a much wider variety of factors to consider when selecting a university. This study investigated the factors and campus visit activities that recruits deem the most important while they are going through the recruiting process. A survey was sent out to Senior high school football athletes who had been through the recruiting process to identify what the most important factors and campus visit actives are when selecting a university. This study also investigates the difference between recruits from different sized high-schools. The results of this study could potentially be used to help college football coaches determine the factors that are most important to a student-athlete and how to create the best campus visit experience for a potential student-athlete.

This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, few subjects at the intersection of medicine and sports have generated as much public interest as sports-related concussions - especially among youth. Despite growing awareness of sports-related concussions and campaigns to educate athletes, coaches, physicians, and parents of young athletes about concussion recognition and management, confusion and controversy persist in many areas. Currently, diagnosis is based primarily on the symptoms reported by the individual rather than on objective diagnostic markers, and there is little empirical evidence for the optimal degree and duration of physical rest needed to promote recovery or the best timing and approach for returning to full physical activity. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth: Improving the Science, Changing the Culture reviews the science of sports-related concussions in youth from elementary school through young adulthood, as well as in military personnel and their dependents. This report recommends actions that can be taken by a range of audiences - including research funding agencies, legislatures, state and school superintendents and athletic directors, military organizations, and equipment manufacturers, as well as youth who participate in sports and their parents - to improve what is known about concussions and to reduce their occurrence. Sports-Related Concussions in Youth finds that while some studies provide useful information, much remains unknown about the extent of concussions in youth; how to diagnose, manage, and prevent concussions; and the short- and long-term consequences of concussions as well as repetitive head impacts that do not result in concussion symptoms. The culture of sports negatively influences athletes' self-reporting of concussion symptoms and their adherence to return-to-play guidance. Athletes, their teammates, and, in some cases, coaches and parents may not fully appreciate the health threats posed by concussions. Similarly, military recruits are immersed in a culture that includes devotion to duty and service before self, and the critical nature of concussions may often go unheeded. According to Sports-Related Concussions in Youth, if the youth sports community can adopt the belief that concussions are serious injuries and emphasize care for players with concussions until they are fully recovered, then the culture in which these athletes perform and compete will become much safer. Improving understanding of the extent, causes, effects, and prevention of sports-related concussions is vitally important for the health and well-being of youth athletes. The findings and recommendations in this report set a direction for research to reach this goal.
