Book excerpt: Inspire and unleash a passion for hand-crafted color! "Unapologetic" is how Felicia Lo always describes her obsession with color and craft. In Dyeing to Spin and Knit, Felicia, founder and creative director of SweetGeorgia Yarns and highly sought after teacher and lecturer, provides clear and accessible guidance for creating gorgeous hand-dyed yarns and spinning fibers and an understanding of how dyeing affects knitted yarn and handspun yarn. Fiber artists will learn the fundamentals of how color works, how to combine and coordinate colors, and how to control the results when dyeing wool and silk yarns and fibers. Spinners will learn how to subdue intense and bright colorways or prevent muddiness in handspun. Knitters will gain the knowledge to avoid or maximize the effects of pooling. And finally, this book will include 10 patterns that use hand-dyed and handspun yarns and fibers to their most exciting advantage in knitting projects. Complete with detailed photographs from Felicia's own dyeing studio, Dyeing to Spin and Knit offers a master class in preparing hand-dyed yarns and fibers. Ignite your love of color--unapologetically!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Master Spinner: A Life of Sir Swire Smith, LL. D., M. P When the story opens, in the forties of last century, Yorkshire people spun and wove with hardly a thought of selling their wares abroad largely; the first line of British steamships crossing the Atlantic was new, and there were still handlooms. Populous now, and wealthy enough, the West Riding was then a region of green dales, well-wooded and thinly inhabited, with little smoke to mar their vistas. But an industry derived of old from Flanders flourished hopefully. Mr. John James, the historian of worsted manu facture, notes that the inhabitants of Keighley and Haworth had been among the most expert spinners of the eighteenth century, and were doing better than those of Bradford. They throve even in the hungry forties. While cottage weavers in the hills despaired, a few enter prising men who could install the power loom had begun to make fortunes and to educate their children. A few only: but thereupon there appeared a group of very charming young people. One is reminded of what happened in the young cities of mediaeval Italy, awaking to their more important civilization. Book excerpt: “Tightly wound, laser-focused epic.” – Kirkus A must-read for fans of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse, transforming The Hunchback of Notre Dame into a powerful tundra-inspired fantasty. Before the massacre at Nariin, Enebish was one of the greatest warriors in the Sky King’s Imperial Army: a rare and dangerous Night Spinner, blessed with the ability to control the threads of darkness. Now, she is known as Enebish the Destroyer—a monster and murderer, banished to a monastery for losing control of her power and annihilating a merchant caravan. Guilt stricken and scarred, Enebish tries to be grateful for her sanctuary, until her adoptive sister, Imperial Army commander Ghoa, returns from the war front with a tantalizing offer. If Enebish can capture the notorious criminal, Temujin, whose band of rebels has been seizing army supply wagons, not only will her crimes be pardoned, she will be reinstated as a warrior. Enebish eagerly accepts. But as she hunts Temujin across the tundra, she discovers the tides of war have shifted, and the supplies he’s stealing are the only thing keeping thousands of shepherds from starving. Torn between duty and conscience, Enebish must decide whether to put her trust in the charismatic rebel or her beloved sister. No matter who she chooses, an even greater enemy is advancing, ready to bring the empire to its knees.

Book excerpt: We're all familiar with the warning, "Don't believe everything you see or hear." Bill Press, the popular co-host of CNN's Crossfire, will have you wondering whether you should believe anything at all. Spin -- intentional manipulation of the truth -- is everywhere. It's in the White House, in the courtrooms, in headlines and advertising slogans. Even couples on dates -- not to mention book jackets -- are guilty of spin. Now, analyst Bill Press freeze-frames the culture of spin to investigate what exactly spin is, who does it and why, and its impact on American society as a whole. Depending upon who is doing it, spinning can mean anything from portraying a difficult situation in the best possible light to completely disregarding the facts with the intent of averting embarrassment or scandal. Using examples drawn from recent history -- the Clinton presidency, the Florida recount, and the Bush White House -- Press first probes spin's favorite haunt: politics. In addition to surveying the incarnations of spin in the fields of journalism, law, and advertising, Press also chews on the spin of sex and "dating," a word that has become the very embodiment of spin. Perhaps surprisingly, however, Press argues that spin isn't all bad, and that without it the harsh truths of our times might be too tough to swallow. With the same keen sense of humor that helped make CNN's Crossfire television's premier debate show and the limited run of The Spin Room so popular, Press turns the tables on the prime purveyors of spin -- called spin doctors -- noting some of their biggest guffaws and blunders. As Press notes, it has become abundantly clear that the twenty-first century, beginning as it has with a president who was "spun into office," will be a fertile stomping ground for spin.

Book excerpt: Magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) is a rapidly evolving field which originated in 1990s and matured recently with the first detection of a single electron spin below the surface of a non-transparent solid. Further development of MRFM techniques will have a great impact on many areas of science and technology including physics, chemistry, biology, and even medicine. Scientists, engineers, and students from various backgrounds will all be interested in this promising field. The objective of this “multi-level” book is to describe the basic principles, applications, and the advanced theory of MRFM. Focusing on the experimental oscillating cantilever-driven adiabatic reversals (OSCAR) detection technique for single electron spin, this book contains valuable research data for scientists working in the field of quantum physics or magnetic resonance. Readers unfamiliar with quantum mechanics and magnetic resonance will be able to obtain an understanding and appreciation of the basic principles of MRFM.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is SPIN? SPIN is a general tool for the specification and formal verification of software for distributed systems. It has been used to detect design errors in a wide range of applications, such as abstract distributed algorithms, data communications protocols, operating systems code, and telephone switching code. The verifier can check for basic correctness properties, such as absence of deadlock and race conditions, logical completeness, or unwarranted assumptions about the relative speeds of processes. It can also check for more subtle, system dependent correctness properties expressed inthe syntax of Linear-time Temporal Logic (LTL). The tool translates LTL formulae automatically into automata representations, which can be used in an efficient on-th-fly verifications procedure. This DIMACS volume presents the papers contributed to the second international workshop that was held on the SPIN verification system at Rutgers University in August 1996. The work covers theoretical and foundational studies of formal verifications, empirical studies of the effectiveness of different types of algorithms, significant practical applications of the SPIN verifier, and discussions of extensions and revisions of the basic code. This text will be of interest to those working in applications.
