Book Synopsis The Martyrology of Tallaght by : Richard Irvine Best
Download or read book The Martyrology of Tallaght written by Richard Irvine Best and published by Henry Bradshaw Society. This book was released on 1931 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Martyrology of Tallaght is contemporary with that of Oengus (vol. 29 in this series) and served as the latter's source. Tallaght monastery, close to Dublin, was founded by Maelruain (d. 792), and his disciple Oengus was a member of the community. The Stowe Missal (vols 31 and 32 in this series) also has a Tallaght provenance. Dated to c. 797-808, the Martyrology of Tallaght is the earliest Irish compilation of its kind, but seems to have aimed at a full list of saints from the Roman Calendar. Under each day is given an entry in Latin followed by a supplement in Irish. The principal manuscript is the Book of Leinster. The many marginal notes and poems of the manuscript are reproduced here, and the edition contains a wealth of notes and very full indexes.
Download or read book Joyce's Audiences written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents for the first time a collective examination of the issue of audience in relation to Joyce’s work and the cultural moments of its reception. While many of the essays gathered in this volume are concerned with particular readers and readings of Joyce’s work, they all, individually and generally, gesture at something broader than a specific act of reception. Joyce’s Audiences is an important narrative of the cultural receptions of Joyce but it is also an exploration of the author’s own fascination with audiences, reflecting a wider concern with reading and interpretation in general. Twelve essays by an international cast of Joyce critics deal with: the censorship and promotion of Ulysses; the ‘plain reader’ in modernism; Richard Ellmann’s influence on Joyce’s reputation; the implied audiences of Stephen Hero and Portrait; Borges’s relation with Joyce; the study of Joyce in Taiwan; the promotion of Joyce in the U.S.; the complaint that there is insufficient time to read Joyce’s work; the revisions to “Work in Progress” that respond to specific reviews; strategies of critical interpretation; Joyce and feminism; and the ‘belated’ readings of post-structuralism.

Book Synopsis The Chronicle of Ireland: Introduction, text by : T. M. Charles-Edwards
Download or read book The Chronicle of Ireland: Introduction, text written by T. M. Charles-Edwards and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicle of Ireland is the principal source for the history of events not only in Ireland itself but also in what is now Scotland up to 911. It incorporated annals compiled on Iona up to c. 740 - a monastery which played a major role in the history of Ireland, of the Picts to its east and, from 635 to 664, of Northumbria. Up to c. 740 the Chronicle is thus a crucial source for both Ireland and Britain; and from c. 740 to 911 it still records some events outside Ireland. The text of the Chronicle is best preserved in the Annals of Ulster, but it was also transmitted through chronicles derived from a version made at the monastery of Clonmacnois in the Irish midlands. This translation is set out so as to show at a glance what text is preserved in both branches of the tradition and what is in only one. -- Amazon.com.
