Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Martyr Lamb: Or Christ the Representative of His People in All Ages There is no superfluity of Biblical Discourses, at least of those in Which the great doctrine of Christ being our representative, stands pre-emi nent, casting a. Light upon all others. It was this consideration Which overcame the hesitation I felt in publishing the following contemplations. It is With earnest seriousness I send them forth to the world, and I entreat my readers to study them With attention before pronouncing on their merits and not to cry at random, Enthusiasm! Hyper-orthodoxy I believe that I have drawn from' the well of Scripture all that I have taught; and out of Scripttfre, let those Who think I have erred correct me, for I am Willing to learn. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The act of martyrdom in the worldview of the Apocalypse has been considered to be an exemplification of non-violent resistance. Paul Middleton argues here, however, that it is in fact a representation of direct participation by Christians, through their martyrdom, in divine violence against those the author of Revelation portrays as God's enemies. Middleton shows that acceptance of martyrdom is to grasp the invitation to participate in the Revelation's divine violence. Martyrs follow the model laid down by the Lamb, who was not only slain, but resurrected, glorified, and who executes judgement. The world created by the Apocalypse encourages readers to conquer the Beast through martyrdom, but also through the experience of resurrection and being appointed judges. In this role, martyrs participate in the judgement of the wicked by sharing the Lamb's power to judge. Different from eschewing violence, the conceptual world of the Apocalypse portrays God, the Lamb, and the martyrs as possessing more power, might, and violent potential than the Emperor and his armies. Middleton believes that martyrdom and violence are necessary components of the worldview of Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory exploration of the Jewish roots of the Last Supper that seeks to understand exactly what happened at Jesus’ final Passover. “Clear, profound and practical—you do not want to miss this book.”—Dr. Scott Hahn, author of The Lamb’s Supper and The Fourth Cup Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist shines fresh light on the Last Supper by looking at it through Jewish eyes. Using his in-depth knowledge of the Bible and ancient Judaism, Dr. Brant Pitre answers questions such as: What was the Passover like at the time of Jesus? What were the Jewish hopes for the Messiah? What was Jesus’ purpose in instituting the Eucharist during the feast of Passover? And, most important of all, what did Jesus mean when he said, “This is my body… This is my blood”? To answer these questions, Pitre explores ancient Jewish beliefs about the Passover of the Messiah, the miraculous Manna from heaven, and the mysterious Bread of the Presence. As he shows, these three keys—the Passover, the Manna, and the Bread of the Presence—have the power to unlock the original meaning of the Eucharistic words of Jesus. Along the way, Pitre also explains how Jesus united the Last Supper to his death on Good Friday and his Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Inspiring and informative, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist is a groundbreaking work that is sure to illuminate one of the greatest mysteries of the Christian faith: the mystery of Jesus’ presence in “the breaking of the bread.”

This sixteenth-century book, presented here in an abridged and updated edition, describes the faithful lives and untimely deaths of Christians from the early church era through the reign of Queen Elizabeth in England. Though man’s evil toward man is troubling, the martyrs’ God-given power to rise above their persecution is ultimately uplifting and inspiring. This is a book every Christian should be familiar with!

Book excerpt: The most Jewish of gospels in its contents and yet the most anti-Jewish in its polemics, the Gospel of Matthew has been said to mark the emergence of Christianity from Judaism. Anthony J. Saldarini overturns this interpretation by showing us how Matthew, far from proclaiming the replacement of Israel by the Christian church, wrote from within Jewish tradition to a distinctly Jewish audience. Recent research reveals that among both Jews and Christians of the first century many groups believed in Jesus while remaining close to Judaism. Saldarini argues that the author of the Gospel of Matthew belonged to such a group, supporting his claim with an informed reading of Matthew's text and historical context. Matthew emerges as a Jewish teacher competing for the commitment of his people after the catastrophic loss of the Temple in 70 C.E., his polemics aimed not at all Jews but at those who oppose him. Saldarini shows that Matthew's teaching about Jesus fits into first-century Jewish thought, with its tradition of God-sent leaders and heavenly mediators. In Saldarini's account, Matthew's Christian-Jewish community is a Jewish group, albeit one that deviated from the larger Jewish community. Contributing to both New Testament and Judaic studies, this book advances our understanding of how religious groups are formed.

However, it is difficult to find one source that describes the lives of martyrs in a comprehensive way. Precious in the Eyes of the Lord: Martyrdom in Christian Tradition presents an account of one hundred martyrs across history. Beginning with the first martyr, Abel in the Old Testament, and concluding with the Acteal martyrs of Mexico in the late twentieth century, the stories of these men and women not only highlight the virtues of charity, fortitude, and patriotism but also reveal the love of God in their hearts.

Book excerpt: The Lion, the Lamb, and the Dawn of Christianity is a work of historical fiction based on the four New Testament Gospels of the Christian Bible. By imbuing some major events in the Gospels with dramatic connective tissue, the story will engage the reader with some fresh new concepts, as well as traditional ones. Many Christian stories have you standing with Jesus and speaking out to the crowd. This book will put you into the crowd. By interacting with the characters, readers have the opportunity to compare them to their own mantra. They will experience Roman life, war, conversion, martyrdom, and the feelings of the first "Christians" as they await the Pentecost. Readers will step into the skin of some powerful men who encounter the living Christ and are converted by him. Why were they converted? What did they feel? Why were the words of Jesus relevant to them? How did the centurion come by the faith that Jesus called "the greatest he had seen in all Israel" (Matthew 8:10)? Why was the centurion's faith tolerated by the Empire-or was it? How did the Pentecost transform a small number of fearful followers into blazing evangelists? The story was written to be concise and a fast read. You will keep turning the pages and will not want to put it down. There are no "slow parts." A reread for a second and third time? Certainly. It is a multifaceted story for a book group. You can discuss not only the story but the wealth of sources cited in the "End Notes," which will enrich the experience-and the fun-with websites for further research and what many will find to be surprising facts. Isolate yourself while reading this book. It is a true escape from today's noise.

Book Synopsis On the Historicity of Jesus by : Richard Carrier

Book excerpt: The assumption that Jesus existed as a historical person has occasionally been questioned in the course of the last hundred years or so, but any doubts that have been raised have usually been put to rest in favor of imagining a blend of the historical, the mythical and the theological in the surviving records of Jesus. Carrier re-examines the whole question and finds compelling reasons to suspect the more daring assumption is correct. He lays out extensive research on the evidence for Jesus and the origins of Christianity and poses the key questions that must now be answered if the historicity of Jesus is to survive as a dominant paradigm. Carrier contrasts the most credible reconstruction of a historical Jesus with the most credible theory of Christian origins if a historical Jesus did not exist. Such a theory would posit that the Jesus figure was originally conceived of as a celestial being known only through private revelations and hidden messages in scripture; then stories placing this being in earth history were crafted to communicate the claims of the gospel allegorically; such stories eventually came to be believed or promoted in the struggle for control of the Christian churches that survived the tribulations of the first century. Carrier finds the latter theory more credible than has been previously imagined. He explains why it offers a better explanation for all the disparate evidence surviving from the first two centuries of the Christian era. He argues that we need a more careful and robust theory of cultural syncretism between Jewish theology and politics of the second-temple period and the most popular features of pagan religion and philosophy of the time. For anyone intent on defending a historical Jesus, this is the book to challenge.
