Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Market for Dried Fruit in Six European Countries United States dried prunes, like United States dried apricots, command a large premium in most countries of Western Europe. The principal exceptions in the case of dried prunes are France and Western Germany. There is virtually no competition in Belgium, Netherlands, Sweden, ' and the United Kingdom between United States dried prunes and those pro duced elsewhere. Almost all of the - imports of dried prunes into these countries before the war were from the United States. Since the war, these countries have turned to dried prunes from other sources only to a very limited extent, even when imports from the United States were sharply curtailed or entirely cut off. The greater appeal of United States dried prunes over Balkan dried prunes among the consumers of the four countries arises mainly from their sweeter taste, larger size, tenderness, and uniformity of packs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Demand for Dried Fruit in Germany Germany is the largest foreign market for American dried prunes and is second only to the United Kingdom as a market for American dried fruit as a whole. The following report points out the principal factors bearing upon the German demand for dried fruit with particular reference to the trend in the per capita consumption of dried fruit, the competition of both imported and domestic fruit, and trade practices and marketing developments in the German dried fruit market. Iet imports of all dried fruit into Germany during the five years 1924-1928 averaged pounds annually compared with pounds during the period 1909-1913. This represents a per capita con sumption of about pounds in recent years compared with about pounds before the war. Approximately 38 per cent of the total dried fruit imported into Germany during the period 1924 - 1928 came from the United States. About 58 per cent of the imported prunes came from the United States and most of the remainder from Yugoslavia. Practically all of the currants came from Greece while Turkey supplied 60 per cent of the im ported raisins and the United States 21 per cent. It appears that American raisins have been supplanting Greek currants in the German market to a considerable extent during recent years. Most of the remaining dried fruit such as apples, apricots and peaches are supplied by the United States. A Study of the German income statistics reveals the fact that over three-fourths of the German population have incomes too small to permit f the purchase of any but the cheapest fruit. This group is probably able to buy dried fruit only When the price is relatively low. Price is, there fope. A very important consideration in determining not only the amount of dried fruit imported from the United States but also the competition to be encountered from dried fruit imported from other foreign countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marketing Fresh Fruit in Europe Compiled from Foreign Commerce and Navigation of the United States. Fresh fruit from the United States finds a wide distribution in Europe. In addition to such important direct markets as Great Britain, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries it reaches many interior countries not shown in tables of exports. Apples, for ex ample, are reshipped from the primary ports to such countries as Switzerland, Austria, Poland, and Finland. The World War pre vented this redistribution from becoming as great as it probably would have been, because of the elimination of Russia as one of our markets and because of the impoverishment of the central European nations. The principal American fresh fruits now marketed in Europe are apples, pears, oranges, and grapefruit. Other fruits are shipped in smaller quantities, and their importance in the export trade seems to be increasing. They include plums, peaches, cranberries, and other berries, and grapes. Table 1 shows the exports of these fruits to Europe in 1926 as compared with the total exports from the United States in that year. About 85 per cent of the exports of apples, 49 per cent of the grapefruit, and 48 per cent of the pears went to Europe. Europe was a relatively small outlet for the other items, but even for these there is a definite tendency toward the shipment of larger quantities to that continent. Additional statis tics on the quantities of fruit exported to Europe are found in the appendix. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Sun-Drying Fruit From the large-non-bearing acreages given in Table 2, to which should be added extensive plantings made in 1925, it is evident that the production of dried fruits must inevitably increase. If fresh shipment and canning do not keep pace with the increasing production, it may become necessary to dry a greater proportion of the fruit crop than formerly. The production of dried fruits is also expanding in other parts of the world, notably Australia and South Africa. At present, the rate of financial exchange and other condi tions resulting from the world war seriously restrict exports of dried fruits from the United States and moreover permit the importation of certain dried fruits from the Mediterranean countries. The amount of dried fruit exports and imports in 1923 can be seen from Table 3. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quality of Dried Fruits: A Survey of Dried Apricots, Prunes, Raisins, and Figs in Retail Markets Standard samples were obtained directly from the packers at intervals during the year and were stored at Fresno in tightly closed drums at 32° F. Medium and large sizes of apricots and prunes, which account for most of the sales volume, were used. Two widely distributed brands of each commodity were included. The first set of standard samples was obtained in October 1959 and was used for comparison with the retail sam ples at each examination throughout the sampling period. A second set of standards of apricots, prunes, and raisins was obtained in March 1960 and a third set in July 1960, and these were used in addition to the first set. The standard samples for figs were in finger packs, and only one set of standards was used. Standard samples did not change appreciably after they were stored at Fresno, but the raisin standards obtained in March and July were darker than the first set. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Dried Fruits The knowledge of sun-preserved fruits is very old - so old none may know its beginning. It is recorded in history that King David of Israel accepted raisins as payment of taxes. In 430 B. C. a Babylonian mortgage, the earliest known document of its kind, called for the return of principal and interest in dried fruits. Peaches are mentioned in the writings of Confucius Through the ages the word comes down that these fruits, which through the agency of a benificent sun were made available through all the year, from harvest time to harvest time, were always considered a delicacy. As populations shifted and spread from out of the sunny plains of the Adriatic countries, where most of these fruits had their beginnings, so far as it is recorded in history, the vines and trees from which they came were transplanted. Those to whom they were new eagerly accepted them and spread their popularity. The ancients ate of these fruits because they were good to eat and pleased their palates, and to a great extent we do likewise, although with our larger knowledge and understanding of dietetic values we are pleased to know that they offer a most pleasant method of obtaining easily assimilated energy. Always the center of the dried fruit industry has shifted westward until on the shores of the Pacific it has reached its highest development in the southern part of California. Today, California fruits, preserved in the health-giving rays of the sun, are known the world over. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
