Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maritime Codes of Spain and Portugal In the course of practice extending over a quarter of a century, mainly in the High Court of Admiralty and its successor, the Admiralty Section of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division, I have frequently come in contact with an urgent necessity for some knowledge of the Maritime Law of Foreign Countries. Pursuing the study in the intervals of a busy life, I thought it might be that others, both those practising the Law and also Shipowners, Merchants, and Underwriters brought in contact with the practical effect of those Laws, might desire to see them in a more accessible form than they could be generally obtained in. I therefore proceeded to publish such translations as I made, or, in some cases, edited, in the Nautical Magazine and Law Magazine and Review, and now am trying the experiment of publishing in a separate form. The present volume gives the Maritime Law of the Iberian Peninsula. Having regard to the immense trade between England and the Peninsula, in ore, fruit and wine, not to mention other matters, and the large passenger traffic carried in British vessels between the Peninsula and South America, and the number of British vessels which call for coals and other purposes at Vigo, Teneriffe, Lisbon, Las Palmas, and St. Vincent, it would seem an appropriate commencement. If this little volume receives sufficient support the series will be continued. I had the kind permission of the late Lord Hannen to dedicate the series to him. I now, alas, can only dedicate it to his memory, a memory which will survive, so long as the practice and study of the Law remains, as that of a great judge, and, as long as any of those who had the inestimable privilege of practising before him survive, as that of the most patient instructor and kindest friend. The so-called “New Scramble for Africa” of the 2000s illustrated how seriously African living conditions are affected by continuous cycles of boom and bust, and how strongly the quality of life currently depends on the investment decisions and corporate social responsibility policies of transnational corporations. Taking the example of the global production network of bauxite and aluminium, the author focuses on the socio-political aspects of this dependency, which he achieves through the conducting of a series of interviews with various involved parties.

Book Synopsis Connecting Histories of Education by : Barnita Bagchi
Download or read book Connecting Histories of Education written by Barnita Bagchi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2014-03-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of education in the modern world is a history of transnational and cross-cultural influence. This collection explores those influences in (post) colonial and indigenous education across different geographical contexts. The authors emphasize how local actors constructed their own adaptation of colonialism, identity, and autonomy, creating a multi-centric and entangled history of modern education. In both formal as well as informal aspects, they demonstrate that transnational and cross-cultural exchanges in education have been characterized by appropriation, re-contextualization, and hybridization, thereby rejecting traditional notions of colonial education as an export of pre-existing metropolitan educational systems.

Download or read book Principles and Methods in Landscape Ecology written by Almo Farina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-05-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third, thoroughly updated edition of a well received book, presents the most complete collection of theories, paradigms and methods utilized by the landscape sciences. With the introduction of new ecosemiotic concepts and innovative managing procedures, it offers a broad list of ecological, ecosemiotical and cultural tools to investigate, interpret and manage the environmental complexity according to a species-specific individual-based approach. Readers will discover the importance of a landscape perspective to create strategic bridges between science and humanities favored by the holistic sight of sensorial (visual, acoustic, olfactory, tactile, and thermal) “scapes”. Distributed in 10 chapters, the content covers many aspects of the landscape sciences ranging from the description of fundamental theories, principles and models originated by ecological approaches like source-sink models, island biogeography, hierarchical theory and scale. The ecosemiotical approaches like the eco-field model, the ecoscape paradigm, and the general theory of resources are widely described and discussed. A cultural approach to landscape is utilized to focus on the heritage values of territories and their environmental identity. This book, written in an accessible and didactic style, is particularly dedicated to undergraduate and graduate students but also scholars in ecology, agroforestry, urban planning, nature design, conservation and remediation. Land practitioners, farmers and policymakers can use this book as an authoritative guide to better understand the function and role of environmental systems according to a social-economic integrated perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume contains a comprehensive, worldwide history of seismological studies of the Earth's crust using controlled sources from 1850 to 2005. Essentially all major seismic projects on land and the most important oceanic projects are covered. The time period 1850 to 1939 is presented as a general synthesis, and from 1940 onward the history and results are presented in separate chapters for each decade, with the material organized by geographical region. Each chapter highlights the major advances achieved during that decade in terms of data acquisition, processing technology, and interpretation methods. For all major seismic projects, the authors provide specific details on field observations, interpreted crustal cross sections, and key references. They conclude with global and continental-scale maps of all field measurements and interpreted Moho contours. An accompanying DVD contains important out-of-print publications and an extensive collection of controlled-source data, location maps, and crustal cross sections."--Publisher's description.
