Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to current trends in the study of the biblical prophets. It surveys the growing volume of work that has been on the redactional analysis of individual books and represents the first attempt to bring together these different strands of redaction criticism and to evaluate the effect they have had on our appreciation of the prophetical books as a distinct genre. The opening chapter deals with the methodology of redaction criticism as applicable to the prophetical books. The author then looks at the redactional history of each of the individual books in turn. The closing chapters consider the implications this approach has for our appreciation of these books and the aims of the writers who created them. In particular, the author draws attention to the literary nature of the image of The Prophet conveyed in the books about prophets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Mark Noll has written that historic Pietism "breathed a badly needed vitality" into post-Reformation Europe. Now the time has come for Pietism to revitalize Christianity in post-Christendom America. In The Pietist Option, Christopher Gehrz, a historian of Pietism, and Mark Pattie, a pastor in the Pietist tradition, show how Pietism holds great promise for the church—and the world—today. Modeled after Philipp Spener's 1675 classic, Pia Desideria, this timely book makes a case for the vitality of Pietism in our day. Taking a hard look at American evangelicalism and why it needs renewal, Gehrz and Pattie explore the resources that Pietism can provide the church of the twenty-first century. This concise and winsome volume serves as a practical guide to the Pietist ethos for life and ministry, pointing us toward the renewal so many long for. The Pietist Option introduces Pietism to those who don't know it—and reintroduces it to those who perceive it as an outdated and inward-focused spirituality, a nitpicking divisiveness, or an anti-intellectual withdrawal. With its emphasis on our walk with Jesus and its vibrant hope for a better future, Pietism connects decisively with the ideas and issues of our day. Here is a revitalizing option for all who desire to be faithful and fruitful in God's mission.

Book excerpt: The kings of Israel and Judah were in serious trouble with the Lord. Twelve years of worshiping Baal and golden calves, listening to Jezebel, and killing the prophets was catching up to them. Their earthly kingdoms were coming to an end, and the Lord would move quickly when he moved. What appeared to be harmless details to them was in fact rebellion in the sight of God. While the kings served the gods of this world, Elijah and Elisha did not. They were dedicated only to the Word of the Lord, and if the Lord didn't speak directly to them, they didn't move at all. And when they did move, it was with the authority of the Lord, resulting in dramatic calling down of fire from heaven, a three-year drought, people raised from the dead, and many other miraculous events. But did Elijah and Elisha take any glory? No, Elijah didn't even accept Naaman's token of appreciate - so completely was he relying only on the Lord's provision. The lives of Elijah and Elisha, as well as the corrupt lives of the kings, serve as important lessons for us today. In addition, there are many prophecies in 1 and 2 Kings that are now being fulfilled. Your own life will be changed forever if you apply even one truth that the Lord reveals to you in this book.

Some references to it have been positive, some negative. It appears to be important, and they'd like to know more about it. But they want a full, understandable explanation, not a simplistic one. What Is Reformed Theology? is an accessible introduction to beliefs that have been immensely influential in the evangelical church. In this insightful book, R. C. Sproul walks readers through the foundations of the Reformed doctrine and explains how the Reformed belief is centered on God, based on God's Word, and committed to faith in Jesus Christ. Sproul explains the five points of Reformed theology and makes plain the reality of God's amazing grace.

In his famous book Christ and His Righteousness, he writes, "Christ has been set forth by God as the One through whom forgiveness of sins is to be obtained; and this forgiveness consists simply in the declaration of His righteousness (which is the righteousness of God) for their remission. God, “who is rich in mercy” (Eph. 2:4), and who delights in it, puts His own righteousness on the sinner who believes in Jesus, as a substitute for his sins. Surely, this is a profitable exchange for the sinner, and it is no loss to God, for He is infinite in holiness, and the supply can never be diminished." Chapters include: 1. How Shall We Consider Christ? 2. Is Christ God? 3. Is Christ a Created Being? 4. God Manifest in the Flesh 5. Important Practical Lessons 6. Christ the Lawgiver 7. The Righteousness of God 8. Book excerpt: The clothing worn by the clergy in a church represents the respect, honor and blessing of anointing placed on the individual wearing it. It is seen by many as a calling from God to be the one standing in the gap, guiding and encouraging others toward God and His outstretched hand. Author Joyce Wooden expounds more on the significance of this calling in her new book, The Mantle of Ministry, Embracing the Call. Delving into studying the ministries of Elijah and Elisha, Joyce seeks to educate readers on understanding that an anointing from God is not found in the garments worn by clergy, but in the hearts and faiths of those called by God. Joyce explores the stories and ministries of Elijah and Elisha, defining the mantle as a godly robe that respected clergy wore to be closer to God and to perform miracles on His behalf. She discussed how Elijah performed fifteen miracles and Elisha performed thirty (after Elijah's departure), and how in their day of ministry, emphasis was given to every piece of garment worn by the higher clergy members. However, her book is not just on comprehending the measure of God's anointing on the mantle and clothing worn by the clergy, but drawing the connection that the anointing was more in the person than the clothing. As her studies of Elijah and Elisha reveal, the departure of Elijah on chariots of fire into the sky and the cloth falling from the sky into Elisha's hands meant that it was the heart God wants most from those He anoints. Her hope is that this book inspires men and women to answer the call God has placed on their lives for ministry. Those called were given the gifts from God to bring glory to Him, while leading His children back to His loving presence.

Book excerpt: JULIE HUNTLEY Dean of the College of Business, Oral Roberts University Morris Ruddick casts the vision of expecting even greater manifestations of power than in the book of Acts. We are given purpose for developing our spiritual maturity focused on overcoming insurmountable obstacles in today's times. Morris masterfully presents the steps for appropriating the mantle of fire that will change our personal lives and the world around us. The practical insight for those hungering to be used mightily by God is empowering. This book offers the tools for those wanting to be instrumental in changing the spiritual climate of this world, while advancing the Kingdom. MARK MCCLENDON Director of Southeast Asia, CBN Inc. Morris Ruddick's perspective on the unseen world has been honed through decades of a prayer-soaked walk with the Lord. As a youth I recall visits to the Ruddick home, listening as my father and Morris would think deep, pray long, and strategize for the Kingdom. Now, 40 years later, his writings challenge the status quo. Mantle of Fire is a book I had to savor, as every sentence brims with spiritual truth, exposing vibrant threads of the invisible realm calling for a more passionate search of pure God-empowered thinking to make us the anointed men and women that God designed us to be. CURT LANDRY Founder, Curt Landry Ministries Morris Ruddick has captured a clear, practical understanding of the current paradigm shift in how Christians think about God's empowerment for today's times. TheMantle of Fireis a must read for those called to the marketplace. It is a great read for those desiring operational maturity within the household of faith. True spiritual maturity of being doers of the Word and not hearers only is no longer an option. This book is a clear call to action!"

Kendall delves into the life of one of the most famous and most relatable persons in the Old Testament: Elijah. Drawn from a popular sermon series Dr. Kendall preached at Westminster Chapel in London, this discussion taken from 1 and 2 Kings traces the prophet's life and ministry from his first appearance and his confrontation with King Ahab until the time he is taken up to heaven. Kendall shows how even this revered prophet--an ordinary man with many imperfections--was used tremendously by God. A great study for both individuals and groups.

Book excerpt: In sharp distinction to the colorfully clad false prophets of Elijah's day, like John the Baptist after him, Elijah stood out singularly and strangely-a different kind of messenger with a different kind of message, wearing a different kind of mantle. Elijah's mantle was not the colorfully embroidered garments of the wealthy, much less the elegant robe of royalty, nor even the typical garment of the average man; neither was Elijah's mantle the soft clothing of false prophets, those reeds forever shaking in the capricious winds of popular doctrine. No, Elijah's mantle was the rough and rare garment of the Divinely-called prophet. Let the true sons of Elijah take heart with Elisha, for God has sovereignly chosen to leave the mantle of Elijah upon the earth, even upon the shoulders of men with like passions as Elijah, men of frailties and fear, failures and foibles, but also men of power through the amplitude of Elijah's mantle. If we would rightly claim the mantle of Elijah, we must wear it as he wore it, our ministries attesting to the same Divine power that the mantle invested upon Elijah our forerunner. So let us ask ourselves: If Elijah's mantle signifies his singular, unique, and divine authority as a God-called preacher, what is the fabric of such a mantle and of such a preacher, and, most importantly, has the mantle of Elijah fallen upon us, and are its threads woven into our ministries? If we would bear Elijah's name and wear Elijah's mantle, we must serve Elijah's God; like the rugged prophet, we must be "very jealous for Jehovah, the God of Israel"; otherwise, no matter how we may array ourselves, we cannot claim Elijah's mantle if we do not proclaim this one truth, the very essence of Elijah's name and the very fabric of his mantle-Jehovah is God. Let us not claim Elijah's mantle if we deny Elijah's God.
