Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of an Old Manor-House: Sutton Place, Guildford One by one the old buildings of our country are perishing by accident, neglect, or wanton destruction their memory passes away, and their place knows them no more. When the passion for covering this island with railways and factories shall have done its worst, our great-grandchildren will hardly possess a fragment of the older work to recall to their eyes the beauty and the life of England in the past. And so it becomes a sort of social duty for those to whom chance has thrown it in their path to preserve such wreckage of old things as the tempest of change has left -any relic that they find still mouldering in the flotsam and jetsam of time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norman Architecture in Cornwall: A Handbook to Old Cornish Ecclesiastical Architecture, With Notes on Ancient Manor-Houses The English and the Normans were really kindred nations; for, while the Danes were making settlements in England, other of their kinsmen from the North were making Similar inroads and settlements in France. Just as Alfred granted a large part of Britain to Guthrum on condition that the latter was baptized, so, in 912, Robert, Duke of the French, agreed to grant part of the land to the pirate - leader, Rolf or Rollo, on similar conditions. This land was called, from its new settlers, the Land of the Northmen, afterwards the Duchy Of Normandy, and it was these men who, in 1066, under the great William, defeated the English at Hastings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church and Manor: A Study in English Economic History OF late years various books relating to the unit of English territorial organisation known as the manor have appeared. Two or three of these deal with short periods, such as the eleventh or the thirteenth century, and the late Mr. Seebohm, in a masterly investigation, has surveyed a considerable part of the field. Notwithstanding the good work that has been done, an essential part of the subject has been omitted, or misunderstood. The manor and the ecclesiastical bene fice have been regarded as entirely independent things. But the economic history of mediaeval England will gain much in simplicity if it can be shown that lord and priest were once the same person; that the hall cannot at an early time be distinguished from the church; and that ecclesiastical benefices were themselves manors, with all the privileges which belonged to feudal lordship. No treatment of the economic history of these islands can be satisfactory unless it includes the church - building and the benefice within its scope. To describe the scattered acres of the open fields, with all the complicated belongings of the village community, and yet leave out the building near which the frail and mud-built houses of the inhabi tants were gathered, is to omit the chief point of interest, for the church was not only the place of worship but also the seat of local government. It has been thought desirable to treat the evidence from. Architecture, as found in existing remains or referred to in documents, in considerable detail, because, if it can be proved that the church-fabric was evolved from the hall or lord's dwelling, a strong presumption arises, on that ground alone, that the benefice was the manor.
