Book Synopsis The Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857 by : ElizabethA. Pergam
Download or read book The Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857 written by ElizabethA. Pergam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overdue study of a groundbreaking event, this is the first book-length examination of the Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition of 1857. Intended to rehabilitate Manchester's image at a heady time of economic prosperity, the Exhibition became a touchstone for aesthetic, social, and economic issues of the mid-nineteenth century. Reverberations of this moment can be followed to the present day in the discipline of art history and its practice in public museums of Europe and America. Highlighting the tension between art and commerce, philanthropy and profit, the book examines the Exhibition's organization and the presentation of the works of art in the purpose-built Art Treasures Palace. Pergam places the Exhibition in the context of contemporary debates about museum architecture and display. With an analysis of the reception of both "Ancient" and "Modern" paintings, the book questions the function of exhibitions in the construction of an art historical canon. The book also provides an essential reference tool: a compiled list of all of the paintings exhibited in 1857 that are now in public collections throughout the world, with an analysis of the collecting trends manifest in their provenance.

Book excerpt: The definitive, official history of Manchester United, the world’s most popular football club, is the one book no United fan can afford to be without. When the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company formed the Newton Heath L and YR Cricket and Football Club in 1878, they could have had no ideas what it was they were starting. Renamed Manchester United in 1902 after financial problems, the new club would soon go on to win the league title and the FA Cup. It was just the beginning of one of the most remarkable and gripping stories in sport. This masterful account explains how United rose to success, and how the club recovered in the bomb damaged aftermath of the Second World War under the brilliant guidance of Matt Busby. The loss of the core of the side in the Munich Air Disaster of February 1958 stunned a nation, and football fans around the world. But Busby recovered to build a new side around the talents of Best, Law and Charlton, becoming the first English side to win the European Cup in 1968. More recently, United have dominated English football under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, winning an incredible 19 Premier League titles, including a unique Treble in 1999. The incredible story of the Reds’ success, the great stars from Billy Meredith over 100 years ago to Ferdinand, Giggs and Rooney today, are all featured in this essential volume. Contributions address regions as diverse as Singapore, Madrid, Lima and Maputo, moving beyond stereotypes and misconceptions of Mao Zedong Thought's influence on art to deliver a survey of the social and political contexts of this international phenomenon. At the same time, the book attends to the the similarities and differences between each case study. It demonstrates that the chameleonic appearances of global Maoism deserve a more prominent place in the art history of both the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Book Synopsis Alan Turing's Manchester by : Jonathan Swinton
Download or read book Alan Turing's Manchester written by Jonathan Swinton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Turing is a patron saint of Manchester, remembered as the Mancunian who won the war, invented the computer, and was all but put to death for being gay. Each myth is related to a historical story. This is not a book about the first of those stories, of Turing at Bletchley Park. But it is about the second two, which each unfolded here in Manchester, of Turing's involvement in the world's first computer and of his refusal to be cowed about his sexuality. Manchester can be proud of Turing, but can we be proud of the city he encountered?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "lively and engaging" history of the Middle Ages (Dallas Morning News) from the acclaimed historian William Manchester, author of The Last Lion. From tales of chivalrous knights to the barbarity of trial by ordeal, no era has been a greater source of awe, horror, and wonder than the Middle Ages. In handsomely crafted prose, and with the grace and authority of his extraordinary gift for narrative history, William Manchester leads us from a civilization tottering on the brink of collapse to the grandeur of its rebirth: the dense explosion of energy that spawned some of history's greatest poets, philosophers, painters, adventurers, and reformers, as well as some of its most spectacular villains. "Manchester provides easy access to a fascinating age when our modern mentality was just being born." --Chicago Tribune

Download or read book Degas and the Business of Art written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it received a more positive response than other works exhibited, its success was with the conservative audience. After considerable difficulty, Degas finally succeeded in selling the painting in 1878 to the newly founded museum in the city of Pau. The painting was probably regarded as an appropriate homage to the old textile manufacturing family who funded its purchase. It also appealed to "progressive" provincial and more cosmopolitan audiences in Pau. The picture's scattered form and atomized figures - in which some interpreters today read evidence of the artist's own ambivalence about capitalism - seemingly contributed to its "innovative" cachet in Pau. But the private and public meanings of the painting had shifted, in discontinuous fashion, between its production and consumption. Under the circumstances, Degas's unfixed and even mixed messages about business became, among other things, his most successful (if unwitting) marketing strategy.
