This opened up almost the entire field of industrial morale, for not only were arsenals and government plants included but also plants functioning for any government production purposes whatever. A large part of the manufacturing facilities of the country was at the time employed on government contracts and it would have been difficult to find many of the major industries of the country which were not concerned either directly or indirectly. At the time of the organization of the Morale Branch, the stimulation of the production of munitions was one of the most important and pressing problems presented to it. Coincident with the recruiting, training and dispatching of organizations was the need of equipment. Production, in many instances, was not keeping pace with requirements. The signing of the Armistice suddenly did away with this problem. Production along military lines was stopped as rapidly as practicable and every effort made to turn industrial effort into normal civilian channels as soon as possible. In the meantime, however, the morale organization had accumulated a considerable and varied experience, and gratifying response was already being manifested to the stimulating measures which had been introduced. All will agree that many industrial difficulties and reactions are in urgent need of being solved. Coercion is impossible, and only mental change offers a prospect of solution, whereby there may be a tendency to convergence rather than divergence. The writer is convinced that the suitable adaptation of scientific morale principles to industrial problems affords by far the most promising approach to the removal of many industrial difficulties interfering with production, and through this to the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Management of Men: A Handbook on the Systematic Development of Morale and the Control of Human Behavior It would have been possible to illustrate almost every point and principle laid down in the following pages by quotation of specific instances and examples. This would doubtless have added interest and force to the presenta tion of the subject, but it has been necessary to exclude such matter in order to keep down the size of what would other wise have become an unduly large volume. It is believed, however, that the vast majority of readers will be able to illustrate the subject sufficiently well to themselves by ex amples and evidence from their own experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has historically believed itself to be the institution best suited to develop the character, spiritual values, and patriotism of American youth. In Strategy for Survival, Lori Bogle investigates how the armed forces assigned itself the role of guardian and interpreter of national values and why it sought to create “ideologically sound Americans capable of defeating communism and assuring the victory of democracy at home and abroad.” Bogle shows that a tendency by some in the armed forces to diffuse their view of America’s civil religion among the general population predated tension with the Soviet Union. Bogle traces this trend from the Progressive Era though the early Cold War, when the Truman and Eisenhower administrations took seriously the battle of ideologies of that era and formulated plans that promised not only to meet the armed forces’ manpower needs but also to prepare the American public morally and spiritually for confrontation with the evils of communism. Both Truman’s plan for Universal Military Training and Eisenhower’s psychological warfare programs promoted an evangelical democracy and sought to inculcate a secular civil-military religion in the general public. During the early 1960s, joint military-civilian anticommunist conferences, organized by the authority of the Department of Defense, were exploited by ultra-conservative civilians advancing their own political and religious agendas. Bogle’s analysis suggests that cooperation among evangelicals, the military, and government was considered both necessary and normal. The Boy Scouts pushed a narrow vision of American democracy, and Joe McCarthy’s chauvinism was less an aberration than a particularly noxious manifestation of a widespread attitude. To combat communism, American society and its armed forces embraced brainwashing—narrow moral education that attacked everyone and everything not consonant with their view of the world and how it ought to be ordered. Exposure of this alliance ultimately dissolved it. However, the cult of toughness and the blinkered view of reality that characterized the armed forces and American society during the Cold War are still valued by many, and are thus still worthy of consideration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esprit de corps has played a significant role in the cultural and political history of the last 300 years. Through several historical case studies, Luis de Miranda shows how this phrase acts as a combat concept with a clear societal impact. He also reveals how interconnected, yet distinct, French, English and American modern intellectual and political thought is. In the end, this is a cautionary analysis of past and current ideologies of ultra-unified human ensembles, a recurrent historical and theoretical fabulation the author calls 'ensemblance'.
