Book excerpt: Depressed and overwhelmed by learning the true meaning of her destiny as the Golden Mage as well as the major part she, along with Aidric, Keldan, and Aren, will play as foretold within the Prophecy of the Six, Allison despairs of ever picking up the pieces of her shattered life. Then to add insult to injury, the Temple of Seni sends representatives to Lamia to collect her in order that she may swear oaths to Seni as is required by divine law. The party is led by Eban, a Domnae full of an infinite amount of ambition and utterly despised by Aidric for reasons he refuses to confide to anyone. However, though suspicious of his motives, Eban’s the least of her worries as going to the Temple means leaving the protection of Lamia’s Shield with very little mage training under her belt at a time when hostilities with Mihr are at their highest, and rumors of a spy planted within the palace by Roderick have begun to arise. The wheels of fate are turning ever so quickly, and Allison feels the threads of her life becoming helplessly and dangerously entangled within its spokes, even more so now as she is exposed to the politics of the Temple, itself.

Book excerpt: In ancient times, when Seni’s World was a united, single kingdom, many prophecies were born. One foretold the arrival of a golden-haired woman with the ability to perform powerful and terrible spells that hadn’t been seen for centuries… …and Allison McNeal’s life was changed forever. Sucked into another world through a “rip” in the fabric of reality, Allison awakens with powerful mage abilities she has no idea how to control and discovers she’s fated to fulfill an ancient prophecy where a single decision will ultimately determine not only which of two warring kingdoms will fall, but also the fate of a world moving closer to a prophesied time of possible annihilation. In a world where many see her arrival as a curse and others as a powerful means towards a dark end, Allison’s only guides are a young Mage-general struggling with his own dark past of secrets and betrayals and the Brothers in Divinity, a secretive order of priests and mages whose only loyalties lie with their god. Book excerpt: Issai's had enough. For over five thousand years, he has been successively reborn with all his previous lives’ memories intact and relentlessly compelled to wander the earth as though drawn to a point that is continuously changing. Over the centuries, whispers of others similar to him began to surface, and his kind became known as Old Souls, revered by some but mostly creatures to be feared. Unable to find answers for his seemingly endless existence and no longer willing to play in what he fears is just a game for the gods’ amusement, Issai abandons his wanderings and questions and settles in an isolated town, determined to resist the strong urge to be on the move that has dictated his entire existence. However, after a brutal attack by the Shi, a secretive group of fanatics that believe consuming an Old Soul will grant them immortality, he is confronted by Hahri, a loud-mouthed Old Soul who offers him his first hint to the mystery behind their compulsion. Issai not only reluctantly finds himself in pursuit of the answers he had once forsaken but also running from a relentless enemy whose unprecedented numbers suggest that immortality may no longer be their only goal. Book excerpt: London has always been home to outsiders. To people who won't, or can't, abide by the conventions of respectable society. For close to two centuries these misfit individualists have had a name. They have been called Bohemians. This book is an entertaining, anecdotal history of Bohemian London. A guide to its more colourful inhabitants: Rossetti and Swinburne, defying the morality of high Victorian England; Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley in the decadent 1890s; The Bloomsburyites and the Bright Young Things; Dylan Thomas, boozing in the Blitz; and Francis Bacon and his cronies, wasting time and getting wasted in 1950s Soho. It's also a guide to the places where Bohemia has flourished: the legendary Café Royal, a home from home to artists and writers for nearly a century, the Cave of the Golden Calf, the Colony Room, the Gargoyle Club and more. The story of Bohemian London is one of drink and drugs, sex and death, excess and indulgence. It's also a story of achievement and success. This book provides a lively and enjoyable portrait of the world in which Bohemian Londoners once lived, and perhaps still do.

Book excerpt: Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, London was gripped by the supposed curse of Tutankhamun, whose tomb in the Luxor sands was uncovered in February 1923 by the British archaeologist Howard Carter. The site was plundered, and over the next few years more than twenty of those involved in the exhumation or in handling the contents of the tomb perished in strange and often terrifying circumstances, prompting the myth of the 'Curse of Tutankhamun'. Nowhere - particularly London's West End - appeared to be safe for those who had provoked the ire of the Egyptian death gods. A blend of meticulous research and educated conjecture, historian and screenwriter Mark Beynon turns armchair detective as he uncovers a wealth of hitherto unpublished material that lays bare the truth behind these fatalities. Could ' London's Curse' be attributed to the work of a macabre mastermind? It soon becomes apparent that these deaths were not only linked by the ominous presence of Tutankhamun himself, but also by a murderer hell-bent on retribution and dubbed by the press as 'The Wickedest Man in the World'.

This book was released on 1957-01-01 with total page 6687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time I have been preparing a general work on primitive superstition and religion. Among the problems which had attracted my attention was the hitherto unexplained rule of the Arician priesthood; and last spring it happened that in the course of my reading I came across some facts which, combined with others I had noted before, suggested an explanation of the rule in question. As the explanation, if correct, promised to throw light on some obscure features of primitive religion, I resolved to develop it fully, and, detaching it from my general work, to issue it as a separate study. This book is the result. Now that the theory, which necessarily presented itself to me at first in outline, has been worked out in detail, I cannot but feel that in some places I may have pushed it too far. If this should prove to have been the case, I will readily acknowledge and retract my error as soon as it is brought home to me. Meantime my essay may serve its purpose as a first attempt to solve a difficult problem, and to bring a variety of scattered facts into some sort of order and system. A justification is perhaps needed of the length at which I have dwelt upon the popular festivals observed by European peasants in spring, at midsummer, and at harvest. It can hardly be too often repeated, since it is not yet generally recognised, that in spite of their fragmentary character the popular superstitions and customs of the peasantry are by far the fullest and most trustworthy evidence we possess as to the primitive religion of the Aryans. Indeed the primitive Aryan, in all that regards his mental fibre and texture, is not extinct. He is amongst us to this day. The great intellectual and moral forces which have revolutionised the educated world have scarcely affected the peasant. In his inmost beliefs he is what his forefathers were in the days when forest trees still grew and squirrels played on the ground where Rome and London now stand.

Also included are descriptions of the demonic and diabolical members making up the hierarchy of Hell and the numerous species of demons that, according to various folklores, mythologies, and religions, populate the earth and plague mankind. Very thoroughly indexed.
