Book excerpt: A young man will go to any length to uncover the truth about his girlfriend’s death in this “expertly crafted, psychologically ambitious” thriller (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Jarlath “Jar” Costello never got over his girlfriend’s suicide five years ago. In fact, he’s certain she’s still alive. The brilliant young Cambridge student was crushed by the loss of her father. It’s said that she leapt to her death off the cliffs of Norfolk. The case is closed . . . though her body was never found. Jar still sees Rosa everywhere—a face on the train, a figure on the cliff. He wonders if he might be going mad. Then he gets an imploring email: “Find me, Jar. Find me, before they do. . . .” As Jar digs into the past, he enters a dark underworld where nothing is as it seems, and no one can be trusted. He is soon thrust into the heart of a larger intrigue that may finally shed some light on Rosa’s death . . . even as it dangerously threatens his own life.

Book excerpt: Daniel Marchant, a suspended MI6 officer, is running the London Marathon. He is also running out of time. A competitor is strapped with explosives, and if he drops his pace, everyone around him will be killed, including the U.S. ambassador to London. Marchant tries to thwart the attack, but is he secretly working for the terrorists? There are those who already suspect him of treachery. Just like they suspected his late father, the former head of MI6, who was removed from his job and accused of treason. On the run from the CIA, Marchant is determined to prove his father's innocence. His quest to do so takes him from the streets of London to India, where the U.S. president is due for his first visit. Marchant soon finds that to clear his family's name he will have to expose a plot that could throw world politics into chaos. In Dead Spy Running, Jon Stock delivers a breakneck thriller that updates the spy novel for the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All good journeys start somewhere. There is always a beginning. There is always the place where it all starts. The place where the journey starts may be amazing. It may be mundane. It may be glamorous. It may be dour. It may be exciting and adventurous. Or it may be besides a road a few miles away from Swindon. The Ridgeway goes for the Swindon based option to start its journey; a National Trail that follows the part of the absolutely ancient former "green" road known as The Ridge Way. The modern route is just a bit shorter the original 400 mile one. The National Trail was opened in 1973 and provides a route for walkers connecting Overton Hill in Wiltshire with Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire; an 87 mile route with ancient forts, barrows, white horses, monuments and more. Or, if you're Rambling Man, you get rural pubs playing trance music and revelations about 1980s television programme Button Moon, that shake you to the core.

An agent on the run from his past. A country on the verge of revolution... Nothing good ever comes from a midnight phone call, especially from Downing Street. For washed-up spy Harry Tower, it is the worst news at the worst possible time. His son, Sean, has gone missing in troubled Iran after writing an exposé about government corruption. Their relationship has never recovered since Harry's wife's suicide, for which Sean holds his father responsible. And Harry, with his career on the verge of disintegration, needs to find him and put things right. When Harry arrives in Tehran, he finds a city on the cusp of revolution. Foreign powers are jockeying for influence, money and, most importantly, oil. The CIA are conspiring to undermine the government with an impending coup, and there are dark mutterings about opium smuggling. But the reasons for Sean's disappearance may be even more sinister than Harry first suspected. Before long, he is on the run - not only from a faceless enemy, but from his own past. Which will catch up with him first? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many hills are there in Britain? Has anyone climbed them all? Where is there for hill walkers to go in the south of England? What is a hill anyway? The answers to these and other questions will be found in The Relative Hills of Britain. This book dispenses with the common assumption that a hill must be at least 2000ft high to be worth climbing. Instead it concentrates on listing all the hills that are relatively high compared to the surrounding land, rather than compared to sea level. This approach leads to some interesting results: for example, the highest points in the Cotswolds and Chilterns, Campsies and Quantocks are all included, as well as the main summits on numerous Scottish islands, whereas well- known mountain summits such as Cairn Gorm, Bowfell and Carnedd Dafydd do not qualify. As well as being an invaluable reference work for all walkers, this book contains a fascinating collection of not too serious facts and figures about the Marilyns, as these relative hills have been called. The book is illustrated by a set of photographs and a large number of very clear maps, which make it easy to locate all the hills in each region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pebbles are usually found only on the beach, in the liminal space between land and sea. But what happens when pebbles extend inland and create a ridge brushing against the sky? Landscape in the Longue Durée is a 4,000 year history of pebbles. It is based on the results of a four-year archaeological research project of the east Devon Pebblebed heathlands, a fascinating and geologically unique landscape in the UK whose bedrock is composed entirely of water-rounded pebbles. Christopher Tilley uses this landscape to argue that pebbles are like no other kind of stone – they occupy an especial place both in the prehistoric past and in our contemporary culture. It is for this reason that we must re-think continuity and change in a radically new way by considering embodied relations between people and things over the long term. Dividing the book into two parts, Tilley first explores the prehistoric landscape from the Mesolithic to the end of the Iron Age, and follows with an analysis of the same landscape from the eighteenth into the twenty-first century. The major findings of the four-year study are revealed through this chronological journey: from archaeological discoveries, such as the excavation of three early Bronze Age cairns, to the documentation of all 829 surviving pebble structures, and beyond, to the impact of the landscape on local economies and its importance today as a military training camp. The results of the study will inform many disciplines including archaeology, cultural and art history, anthropology, conservation, and landscape studies.
