Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thirteenth Juror: A Tale Out of Court Certainly there was no keener Observer in Fraser County than Peter Reeve as he sat on his impro vised rostrum, pipe in hand, beaming a bene diction on his assembled guests. He knew every man in the place and just what had brought him there; he could name every juror who had sat on any case of importance during the past thirty years, and give the inside history of his verdict; he was generally familiar with the claims of the litigants long before they reached the court-room; and there were not many lawyers who could tell him anything he did not already know concerning the private afiairs of their clients. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales Out of Court It was almost two years after this casual meet ing that I called at Butterfield's otfice on the Northern Terminal business. Except that he was a trifle bigger in body and coarser in feature he had not changed much in the interval, and I would have known him anywhere. But the expression on his face as he glanced up from my card convinced me that I was about to deal with a very different person from the man who played to his wife's piping at the social board. The jury, after sitting all night and nearly all day, had found the prisoner not guilty. Solomon Stone, once more a free man, walked with an unsteady step and a haggard face from the court room, and with his attorney drove away. The throng of men that had attended the trial from beginning to end, each a self appointed judge, gathered in groups of twos and threes on and about the court-house steps, and discussed the case. Every face was either stern or serious. There were many emphatic gestures in the different clusters. Some spoke in low confidential tones, others argumentatively, while a few voices were loud in anger and replete with threats. These were the friends of Nathan Overton who had died, they claimed, from the effects of a blow dealt him on the head by Solomon Stone. The two men were neighbors, and had quarreled over a blooded colt which both claimed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of General James Wilson of New Hampshire James Wilson, Sr., is represented to'have been a good lawyer, familiar with the science of the law, a man of quick preception, careful and thorough in the preparation of his cases, and he conducted them before the court and jury with marked ability and success. His practice in Cheshire and Hillsborough counties was ex tensive, and he was generally retained on one side or the other in every important case. When asked by Mr. Levi Chamberlain why he did not address the reason of the jury instead of their feelings, he replied Too small a mark; too small a mark for me to hit. The office of foreman in the People vs. Emory certainly sought the man. But though it sought him diligently and vigorously, two entire panels were exhausted before it came to me as the reward of ignorance and innocence. Had I known what was in store for me I should certainly have read the news papers and disqualified myself, as others did, by assert ing an unalterable opinion concerning the guilt or innocence of the accused. Unfortunately, however, I was the first victim selected from the third panel; I had not been present when the other candidates were examined, and I had never heard of the Shaw murder before I entered the court-room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Years at the Russian Court The English daily papers described the Emperor and his family as having fled in their yacht, at a time when the yacht was deeply embedded in ice outside Kronstadt. I could multiply such stories ad lib., but merely wish to draw attention to the fact that so much that is written regarding Russia and the Imperial family is absolutely untrue, so little is really known about the Court life, that I am emboldened to offer my slight sketches of life in the Palaces. It would be very easy for me to pile on the agony, to represent the Emperor as a much ridden man; to picture plots and counter plots; to speak of hairbreadth escapes from death; of hidden bombs; of life made horrible by fears but no such things have occurred in my six years at the Russian Court, and I am a truthful person, and have not started forth to write fiction, but plain, unvarnished truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Court a Novel Ome two-and-twenty years ago, a remarkably handsome young man, plainly attired, but of gentlemanlike appearance, and looking like an officer in the army, rode into the yard of the Bell, at Aylesford, in the pleasant county of Kent, and consigning his horse, who seemed to have done a good day's work, to the ostler, entered the inn. As he passed through a side-door into the house, he encountered the landlord, a stout red-faced man, who, bowing obsequiously, ushered him into a small parlour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beecher Trial: A Review of the Evidence The jury in the Beecher case, after deliberating eight days, came into court with the announcement that they were unable to agree upon a verdict. The conflicting views which prevailed among twelve men who had the advantage of hearing all the witnesses examined and cross-examined have been shared by the public at large. But as we pass beyond the reach of those potent local influences which necessarily pressed heavily oh the jury - for a man was under trial who in Brooklyn had been treated almost as a god-the divisions of opinion are found to be more strongly marked. There are many who will always hold that the plaintiff's case was fully proved. A second class will continue to believe Mr. Beecher innocent; while a third will consider that the Scotch verdict of "not proven" would have been the only just conclusion to reach. And there are comparatively few who will not in their hearts be compelled to acknowledge that Mr. Beecher's management of his private friendships and affairs has been entirely unworthy of his name, position, and sacred calling. The evidence in the case has been so voluminous that we should ill discharge our duty if, before taking leave of the trial, we neglected to review it with some little care. The case naturally divides itself into four parts. There is, first, the charge itself, and the train of circumstances surrounding it. This must be considered, secondly, in connection with Mr. Beecher's acknowledged relations towards all the parties.
