Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its extensive use of primary source materials and provision of explanations, this book places readers into the context of late 17th-century Salem to shed light on one of the darkest events in American history—the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch trials are one of the most fascinating events in American history. Despite being commonly covered in school curricula, the nature of the trials are often misunderstood. This book enables readers to get unique perspective and insight into the nature of this event through a representative selection of primary source materials, each of which is prefaced with explanatory editorial comments. The result is a work that clarifies the belief systems and religious and social culture of 17th century Massachusetts and places them into a comprehensible context to make sense of how the Salem witch trials came to happen. The book provides an introductory overview of the Salem witch trials, which is followed by an array of primary sources that tell the Salem story in the words of both the accusers and the victims of that episode. Editorial commentary accompanies each of the documents, placing it into its historical framework and clearly explaining archaic terminology and testimony. The primary sources used in this work are drawn from the vast archive of Salem witch trial sources, including court testimonies, court depositions, commentary from journals, miscellaneous court records such as arrest and death warrants, and writings by contemporary critics of the trials. This broad and balanced mix of documents gives students of the Salem witch trials a unique sense of the extent and impact of this event on the people of colonial Massachusetts as well as the complexity of the event.
Book Synopsis Enlightened Pleasures by : Thomas M. Kavanagh
Download or read book Enlightened Pleasures written by Thomas M. Kavanagh and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Novelists, artists, and philosophers of the eighteenth century understood pleasure as a virtue - a gift to be shared with one's companion, with a reader, or with the public. In this daring new book, Thomas Kavanagh overturns the prevailing scholarly tradition that views eighteenth-century France primarily as the incubator of the Revolution. Instead, Kavanagh demonstrates how the art and literature of the era put the experience of pleasure at the center of the cultural agenda, leading to advances in both ethics and aesthetics."--Publisher's description.
Book Synopsis Shakespeare and the Resistance by : Clare Asquith
Download or read book Shakespeare and the Resistance written by Clare Asquith and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare's largely misunderstood narrative poems contain within them an explosive commentary on the political storms convulsing his country The 1590s were bleak years for England. The queen was old, the succession unclear, and the treasury empty after decades of war. Amid the rising tension, William Shakespeare published a pair of poems dedicated to the young Earl of Southampton: Venus and Adonis in 1593 and The Rape of Lucrece a year later. Although wildly popular during Shakespeare's lifetime, to modern readers both works are almost impenetrable. But in her enthralling new book, the Shakespearean scholar Clare Asquith reveals their hidden contents: two politically charged allegories of Tudor tyranny that justified-and even urged-direct action against an unpopular regime. The poems were Shakespeare's bestselling works in his lifetime, evidence that they spoke clearly to England's wounded populace and disaffected nobility, and especially to their champion, the Earl of Essex. Shakespeare and the Resistance unearths Shakespeare's own analysis of a political and religious crisis which would shortly erupt in armed rebellion on the streets of London. Using the latest historical research, it resurrects the story of a bold bid for freedom of conscience and an end to corruption that was erased from history by the men who suppressed it. This compelling reading situates Shakespeare at the heart of the resistance movement.

It explains the celestial phenomena and the corresponding terrestrial events. It explains the cause and effect of events. The main basis of astrological thought is that the celestial phenomena effects the life and events on the earth. It does not permit anyone to conclude any event just as an accident. Celestial bodies generate a lot of energy m their movements and astrology shows us how we can use these energies operative m our lives in the best possible way. Astrology is a science which helps the mankind to put their life in the right path. Astrology was tested and experienced for many centuries and it’s knowledge was handed down the ages to new generations. A study of the civilizations flourished m different parts of the world shows that Astrology played an important role m their life. The places where astrology does not flourish are mostly barbarious, lacking in knowledge and they don’t have any communication with the universe. In India, astrology has been considered as the best guide to achieve the fourfold objectives of life and they are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksa All the activities of human being are directed towards the achievement of these goals and astrology helps us to achieve them in a organized manner. Astrology has reached this stage after nullifying the criticisms, which it has to face from the beginning itself. Astrology has the seven visible grahas - Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn along with the two lunar nodes - Rahu and Ketu . Rahu and Ketu are accepted as grahas in Indian astrology only. They are considered as shadowy - grahas. The details available about Rahu and Ketu are confusing. Astrological texts don’t have a unanimus opmion about Rahu - Ketu. These opinions create confusion in the mind of astrologers as well as astrology followers. So, there is a need of study on Rahu - Ketu. Rahu - Ketu are considered as recent developments by many scholars But, this is not true. Their references are available m vedas itself. So, with a view to give some clear opinion on Rahu - Ketu, I have chosen this subject for study. Further, we know that astrology is the most criticized subject and research in this field are very less. So, I have tried to answer these criticisms and I hope that my study will encourage more researches in this field.

Book Synopsis Shakespeare and Religion by : Alison Shell
Download or read book Shakespeare and Religion written by Alison Shell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets Shakespeare in the religious context of his times, presenting a balanced, up-to-date account of current biographical and critical debates, and addressing the fascinating, under-studied topic of how Shakespeare's writing was perceived by literary contemporaries - both Catholic and Protestant - whose priorities were more obviously religious than his own. It advances new readings of several plays, especially Hamlet, King Lear and The Winter's Tale; these draw in many cases on new and under-exploited contemporary analogues, ranging from conversion narratives, books of devotion and polemical pamphlets to manuscript drama and emblems. Shakespeare's writing has been seen both as profoundly religious, giving everyday human life a sacramental quality, and as profoundly secular, foreshadowing the kind of humanism that sees no necessity for God. This study attempts to reconcile these two points of view, describing a writer whose language is saturated in religious discourse and whose dramaturgy is highly attentive to religious precedent, but whose invariable practice is to subordinate religious matter to the particular aesthetic demands of the work in hand. For Shakespeare, as for few of his contemporaries, the Judaeo-Christian story is something less than a master narrative.
