Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices The Kullavagga includes accounts of the First and Second Buddhist Councils and the establishment of the community of Buddhist nuns, as well as rules for addressing offenses within the community. The Cullavagga has 12 chapters:- the first deals with various procedures to be followed in dealing with badly behaved monks- the next deals with probation for monks guilty of certain offences (see Suttavibhanga)- the next chapter deals with the case where a monk on probation commits a further offence- explanation of the seven rules for settling disputes (see Suttavibhanga)- minor matters- lodgings- schism; this chapter starts with the story of Devadatta, the Buddha's fellow clansman; he starts by inviting the elderly Buddha to retire and appoint him in his place; when this is refused he makes three attempts to assassinate the Buddha; when these fail he asks the Buddha to impose strict practices, including vegetarianism, on the monks; when this is refused he leads a schism- observances; various duties- a monk may suspend the recitation of the Patimokkha if another monk has an offence unconfessed- nuns; the Buddha, after being asked seven times, finally agrees to establish an order of nuns, but warns that it will weaken the teaching and shorten its lifetime, and imposes strict rules subordinating nuns to monks (some even more misogynistic material can be found in the Pali Canon, most notably the Kunala Jataka; for the other side see Therigatha)- shortly after the Buddha's death, Kassapa holds a council at which the teachings are recited; Upali answers questions on the vinaya and Ananda on the dhamma- a century later a dispute arises on various points, mainly on the acceptance of gold and silver; another council is held which agrees on the stricter position, after receiving advice from an aged pupil of Ananda (courtesy of wikipedia.com)

Book Synopsis Buddhist Scriptures (Annotated Edition) by : Edward Joseph Thomas
Download or read book Buddhist Scriptures (Annotated Edition) written by Edward Joseph Thomas and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive annotation of more than 10.000 words about the history and basics of Buddhism, written by Thomas William Rhys Davids * an interactive table-of-contents * perfect formatting for electronic reading devices This book contains the essential Buddhist scriptures, as preserved by the Buddhists of Ceylon and Further India and which are in the Pali language, a language related to Sanskrit much as Italian is related to Latin; and for several centuries before and after Christ it was spoken in varying dialects over most of Northern India. Buddha, according to the Ceylon tradition, died 543 B.C., but it is generally agreed that this date is too early. The latest calculation by an Indian scholar, Mr. V. Gopala Aiyer, makes the date fifty-six years later, 487 B.C. Immediately after Buddha's death the first council is said to have been held at Rajagaha (now Rajgir in Behar on the borders of Bengal), where the Vinaya (discipline) and Dhamma (doctrine) were recited and fixed. The historical evidence for this council is much disputed, but it is extremely probable that some such collection was made about this time. Nothing was written down. It was preserved, as the Vedas had already been preserved for centuries, by memory. It is this very fact which strengthens the view that we possess a faithful picture of the preaching of Buddha, a preaching which extended over more than forty years. To determine to what extent the discourses have been worked up into other forms and added to, and especially how the rules of the Order have been gradually elaborated, is a work for future scholars. Contents: Introduction The Buddhist Scriptures Christian Parallels The Dream Of Queen Maya The Birth Of Gotama The Four Signs The Great Renunciation The Chain Of Causation The Beginning Of Buddha's Preaching The Ordination Of Yasa The Ten Commandments The Fire Discourse The Weaver's Daughter The Questions Of Malunkyaputta The Questions Of Uttiya The Questions Of Vacchagotta Birth-Story Of The Blessings Of The Commandments Birth-Story Of King Mahasilava Birth-Story Of The City With Four Gates The Pig-Faced Ghost The Jewel Discourse. A Spell Dhaniya The Herdsman Buddha's Visit To Chunda The Death Of Buddha The Non-Existence Of Individuality Non-Individuality And Moral Responsibility

Compare the Bible verse: “Jesus knew all people and needed no one to testify about anyone; for he himself knew what was in everyone” (John 2.24-25) to the Buddhist scripture: “He was expert in knowing the thoughts and actions of living beings” (Vimalakirtinirdesha Sutra 2). Written by a renowned New Testament scholar and national bestselling author, and with an introduction by Jack Kornfield, Jesus and Buddha is a timeless testament to what makes us similar rather than different. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking spiritual conversation that invites you to step beyond the limits of any one faith into a global spirituality. Long description:The World Wisdom Bible is a global spiritual conversation about the nature of life and how best to live it. Drawing on ancient and timeless texts from Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, and Taoism, this compendium of sacred texts juxtaposes seemingly divergent teachings to create a spiritual collage of wisdom that crosses religious boundaries, and invites the reader to step beyond the limits of any one faith into a global spirituality. Organized by themes—The Absolute, Justice, Wisdom, Compassion, Spiritual Practice, Ethical Living, and more—The World Wisdom Bible is more than an anthology of diverse teachings; it is a new scripture for those who describe themselves as spiritual independents, spiritual but not religious, and nones. Where conventional Bibles and scriptures speak to believers of one religion or another, The World Wisdom Bible speaks to seekers of every faith and none.
