That magnetoelectric effect is coupling of electrical and magnetic orderings provided by a single material or several coupled materials. This dissertation explores magnetoelectric effects in two different oxide thin film heterostructures. First, the intrinsic magnetoelectric effect in room temperature multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO[subscript 3]), and second the extrinsic magnetoelectric effect in strain-coupled composite membranes. Bismuth ferrite is one of the few intrinsically magnetoelectric materials with possible technological importance, as it is ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic at room temperature. Exploiting multiferroic BiFeO[subscript 3] thin films in spintronic devices requires deterministic control of both internal magnetoelectric coupling in BiFeO[subscript 3], as well as exchange coupling of its antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic overlayer. We present an approach using a monodomain magnetoelectric state with single-step switching. Here we demonstrate room temperature, deterministic and robust, exchange coupling between monodomain BiFeO[subscript 3] films and a Co overlayer that is intrinsic (i.e., not dependent on domain walls). Direct coupling between BiFeO[subscript 3] antiferromagnetic order and Co magnetization is observed, with ~ 90[degrees] in-plane Co moment rotation upon single-step switching that is reproducible for hundreds of cycles. Magnetoelectricity in piezoelectric / ferromagnetic thin-film heterostructures comes from piezoelectric strain combined with magnetostriction. In-plane magnetization rotation with an electric field across the film thickness has been challenging due to the large reduction of in-plane piezoelectric strain by substrate clamping, and in two-terminal devices, the requirement of anisotropic in-plane strain. Here we show that these limitations can be overcome two different ways in thin films. First by designing the piezoelectric strain tensor using the boundary interaction between biased and unbiased piezoelectric in (001)-oriented [Pb(Mg[subscript 1/3]Nb[subscript 2/3])O[subscript 3]][subscript 0.7]-[PbTiO[subscript 3]][subscript 0.3] (PMN-PT) membranes with ferromagnetic Ni overlayers, and second by fabricating (011)-oriented Ni/PMN-PT membranes capable of generating anisotropic strain from the symmetry of the crystal alone. We demonstrate several magnetoelectric effects including 90[degrees] rotation of in-plane magnetic anisotropy with a perpendicular electric field. Further optimization of magnetoelectric PMN-PT membrane heterostructures is expected to allow for magnetization rotation at even lower voltages and for nonvolatile magnetoelectric switching.

Book excerpt: Functional metal-oxide materials exhibit many intriguing phenomena and attract the intensive research in condensed matter physics as well as materials science. Furthermore, the metal-oxide-based heterostructures demonstrate unusual low-dimensional effects due the symmetry breaking at the interface. I have studied several low dimensional heterostructures from the theoretical and computational perspectives. I have developed a multiscale simulation framework, based on density functional theory that covers the microscopic (~ 10−9 m), mesoscopic (~ 10−8 m) and macroscopic (~ 10−7 m) length scale. The first heterointerface I discuss is Si/EuO. Using density functional theory, I demonstrate how the interfacial oxidation influences the band alignment between the Si substrate and EuO, which is essential for the EuO applications in spintronic devices. The second system is the two-dimension electron gas at the oxygen deficient SrTiO3/EuO interface in the BaTiO3/SrTiO3/EuO heterostructure. I demonstrate that the spontaneous polarization in BaTiO3 can influence the intrinsic electric field across SrTiO3/EuO and control the location of the two-dimensional electron gas in either SrTiO3 side or EuO side. The switchable functionality due to the presence of BaTiO3 offers a promising way to control spin polarized carriers in spintronic devices. Next, I focus on the magnetoelectric effect at the BaTiO3/Ni interface and demonstrate that compared to bulk multiferroic materials, artificially engineered interface structures have much larger magnetoelectric coupling coefficients due to the symmetry breaking at the interface. The fourth system I study is the BaSnO3-based quantum well. By utilizing the intersubband transitions, the BaSnO3-based quantum well structure has high nonlinear optical susceptibility as well as broad optical spectral range, from THz to near visible light region, which has promising applications as nonlinear light source in photonic integrated circuit. The fifth system discussed in this thesis is the epitaxial BaTiO3 films deposited on different substrates. Compared with the bulk material, the behavior of thin films of BaTiO3 is different due to the complicated boundary conditions. To describe a thin film, I use phase field simulations implemented with a finite element method. The simulations are able to reveal the complex domain morphology

Book excerpt: The nature of magnetism at thin film surfaces and interfaces is not yet fully understood, yet it is quite important for both fundamental studies and technological applications. In this dissertation, I present a study of the magnetism and magnetotransport in single thin film layers as well as at interfaces of Fe3O4/spinel chromite/LSMO and Fe3O4/spinel chromite/Fe3O4 heterostructures. To begin with, investigations of single layer thin films on metallic oxides such as perovskite structure SrRuO3 and spinel structure LiTi2O4 elucidate the dependence of transport properties on parameters such as thickness, film strain state, and crystal orientation. In addition, the magnetism of CoFe2O4 thin films is examined while dynamically altering the strain state via the temperature-dependent lattice parameter of piezoelectric BaTiO3 substrates. Detailed spectroscopy experiments indicate that magnetism at the (110) LSMO and (111) LSMO surfaces are not suppressed compared to (001) LSMO interfaces. In addition, no magnetic coupling was observed between LSMO and spinel chromite layers above 100K. In contrast, the (110) Fe3O4 surface exhibited a significant change in anisotropy accompanied by an enhanced magnetization in the spinel chromite layer to beyond room temperature. At the isostructural interface, there is strong ferromagnetic coupling between Fe and Cr ions in bilayers. Our results on Fe3O4 and LSMO surfaces, combined with measurements on the angular, field and temperature dependence of junctions with LSMO and Fe3O4 electrodes, indicate that spin polarization is not intrinsically suppressed at a surface or interface but that magnetization and spin polarization depends on the crystal surface orientation, strain state and surface or interface reconstruction.
