Book Synopsis Two-Dimensional Electron Systems by : E.Y. Andrei
Download or read book Two-Dimensional Electron Systems written by E.Y. Andrei and published by Springer. This book was released on 1997-09-30 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents experimental and theoretical research in the field, providing an introduction for graduate students and non-experts and serving as a reference for researchers. Focuses on electrons bound to the surface of liquid helium which form a non-degenerate 2D system of fermions. Early chapters describe the surface electron state, the phase diagram of the 2D electron system, and the properties of the Wagner crystal. Later chapters describe experiments with the Wagner crystal, and discuss the many-electron theory of transport of a 2D non-degenerate system, transport phenomena, experiments on the out-of-plane motion of electrons, non-linear and polaronic effects, the effects of disorder on transport properties, and properties of the 2D non-degenerate system that forms when charged particles are trapped under the surface of liquid helium. Book Synopsis Introduction to Solid State Physics by : Charles Kittel
Download or read book Introduction to Solid State Physics written by Charles Kittel and published by Wiley. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition over 50 years ago, Introduction to Solid State Physics has been the standard solid state physics text for physics students. The author's goal from the beginning has been to write a book that is accessible to undergraduates and consistently teachable. The emphasis in the book has always been on physics rather than formal mathematics. With each new edition, the author has attempted to add important new developments in the field without sacrificing the book's accessibility and teachability. * A very important chapter on nanophysics has been written by an active worker in the field. This field is the liveliest addition to solid state science during the past ten years * The text uses the simplifications made possible by the wide availability of computer technology. Book Synopsis The Fractional Quantum Hall Effect by : Tapash Chakraborty
Download or read book The Fractional Quantum Hall Effect written by Tapash Chakraborty and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at the end of 1981 by Tsui, Stormer and Gossard was absolutely unexpected since, at this time, no theoretical work existed that could predict new struc tures in the magnetotransport coefficients under conditions representing the extreme quantum limit. It is more than thirty years since investigations of bulk semiconductors in very strong magnetic fields were begun. Under these conditions, only the lowest Landau level is occupied and the theory predicted a monotonic variation of the resistivity with increasing magnetic field, depending sensitively on the scattering mechanism. However, the ex perimental data could not be analyzed accurately since magnetic freeze-out effects and the transitions from a degenerate to a nondegenerate system complicated the interpretation of the data. For a two-dimensional electron gas, where the positive background charge is well separated from the two dimensional system, magnetic freeze-out effects are barely visible and an analysis of the data in the extreme quantum limit seems to be easier. First measurements in this magnetic field region on silicon field-effect transistors were not successful because the disorder in these devices was so large that all electrons in the lowest Landau level were localized. Consequently, models of a spin glass and finally of a Wigner solid were developed and much effort was put into developing the technology for improving the quality of semi conductor materials and devices, especially in the field of two-dimensional electron systems.
Book Synopsis Shortcut to Superconductivity by : Armen Gulian
Download or read book Shortcut to Superconductivity written by Armen Gulian and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible textbook offers a novel, concept-led approach to superconducting electronics, using the COMSOL Multiphysics software to help describe fundamental principles in an intuitive manner. Based on a course taught by the author and aimed primarily at engineering students, the book explains concepts effectively and efficiently, uncovering the “shortcut” to understanding each topic, enabling readers to quickly grasp the underlying essence. The book is divided into two main parts; the first part provides a general introduction to key topics encountered in superconductivity, illustrated using COMSOL simulations based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations and avoiding any deeply mathematical derivations. It includes numerous worked examples and problem sets with tips and solutions. The second part of the book is more conventional in nature, providing detailed derivations of the basic equations from first principles. This part covers more advanced topics, including the BCS-Gor'kov-Eliashberg approach to equilibrium properties of superconductors, the derivation of kinetic equations for nonequilibrium superconductors, and the derivation of time-dependent Ginzburg–Landau equations, used as the basis for COMSOL modeling in the first part. Supported throughout by an extensive library of COMSOL Multiphysics animations, the book serves as a uniquely accessible introduction to the field for engineers and others with a less rigorous background in physics and mathematics. However, it also features more detailed mathematical background for those wishing to delve further into the subject.
