Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magnetic Circuit This book, together with the companion book entitled The Electric Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for the correct understanding of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery, transformers, transmission lines, etc. The book also contains the essential numerical relations used in the predetermination of the performance and in the design of electrical machinery and apparatus. The whole treatment is based upon a very few funda mental facts and assumptions. The student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental electromagnetic relations rather than upon a sepa rate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is some times done. The book is not intended for a beginner, bit for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engi neering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treat ment is somewhat different from that given in most other books dealing with magnetic phenomena. It is based directly upon the circuital relation, or interlinkage, between an electric current and the magnetic flux produced by it. This relation, and the law of induced electromotive force, are taken to be the fundamental phenomena of electro - magnetism. No use what ever is made of the usual artificial concepts of unit pole, magnetic charge, magnetic shell, etc. These concepts of mathematical physics, together with the law of inverse squares, embody the theory of action at a distance, and are both superfluous and misleading from the modern point of view of a continuous action in the medium itself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Transformer Magnetic Circuit The alternating current transformer has opened up and made possible the development of a branch of electrical industry which a few years ago would have seemed impossible. Perhaps the m st striking illustrations of electrical development along the line referred to above are: the generation of electric power at Niagara, and its subsequent economical transmission to Buffalo, and the performance of the Fresno plant in California. In this latter, power is developed by a water fall and transmitted to Fresno, a distance of thirty five miles. Step up transformers are used at the generating end. The line tension in both cases is about eleven thousand volts. Step down transformers are used at the distributing end. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Circuit The Magnetic Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for calculation of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery and of transmission lines. The advanced student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental theoretical relations rather than upon a separate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is often done. The first chapter is devoted to a review of the direct-current circuit, the next four chapters treat of sine-wave alternating current circuits, and the last two chapters give the fundamental properties of the electrostatic circuit. All the important results and methods are illustrated by numerical problems of which there are over one hundred in the text. The pamphlet is not intended for a beginner, but for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engineering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treatment is made as far as possible uniform, so that the student sees analogous relations in the direct-current circuit, in the alternating-current circuit, in the electrostatic circuit, and finally in the magnetic circuit. All matter of purely historical or academic interest, not bearing directly upon the theory of electric machinery, has been left out. An ambitious student will find a more exhaustive treatment in the works mentioned at the end of the pamphlet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International System of Electric and Magnetic Units There are a number of reasons for considering induction and magnetizing force to be different in physical nature, just as the deflection. Of a spring is physically different from the mechanical force producing it. As the names of the two quantities suggest, B characterizes the magnetized state of the medium and H is the agency tending to produce a magnetized state. Perhaps the dis tinction is most clearly seen by the analogies furnished in the discussion of the magnetic circuit (preceding section). There is no confusion between D, the electric displacement, which character izes a state of the medium, and el, the electric field intensity which produces the displacement. The distinction is even' clearer be tween U, the current density in a medium, and the EL which causes it.
