Book Synopsis Psychoanalytic Criticism by : Elizabeth Wright
Download or read book Psychoanalytic Criticism written by Elizabeth Wright and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is psychoanalytic criticism and how can it be justified as a type of criticism in its own right? In this new and thoroughly revised edition of her classic textbook, Elizabeth Wright provides a cogent answer to this question and a wide-ranging introduction to psychoanalytic criticism from Freud to the present day. Since each school of psychoanalysis has its own theory of the aesthetic process, the field is complex. Adopting a critical perspective, Elizabeth Wright focuses on major figures and texts in psychoanalysis and in literary and art criticism: classical psychoanalysis; Jungian analytic psychology; objects-relations theory; French psychoanalysis; French anti-psychoanalysis; feminist psychoanalytic criticism. Across these divisions certain problems recur, problems which conceal themselves in a wide range of surprising places, from Shakespearean tragedy to performance theatre from magic realism to detective fiction, from the German Lied to Wagner. These areas are investigated with reference to rival psychoanalytic theories, while connections are traced between the aesthetic process and the psychoanalytic approach. Already established as the leading introduction to the field, this new edition of Psychoanalytic Criticism will be essential reading for students of literature and literary theory, psychoanalysis, feminism and feminist theory, cultural studies and the humanities generally.

Download or read book Psyche and Text written by Henry Sussman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1993-08-03 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sussman here explores the relevance and value of object-relations theory to literature and literary studies. His study of character treats literature as a medium in which important relationships to conceptualized others—artifacts, mentors, activities, and schools of thought—are being worked through. Although rooted in the psychoanalytical model, this book is ultimately a study of character and of the conditions of subjectivity and intellectual work in the contemporary world. No background in literature or psychoanalysis is necessary for its understanding and productive use. Beginning his study of character with Sophocles' The Antigone and Shakespeare's Othello, Sussman then goes on to locate the underpinnings of twentieth-century notions of the grandiose and of subjective emptiness in the Romantic exploration of the sublime. Discussions of characterization in Kafka, Joyce, and Beckett lead to an extended reading of Musil's A Man Without Qualities. To show the increasing awareness of narcissistic psychopathology in contemporary popular culture, Sussman also includes readings of "Citizen Kane" and "The Silence of the Lambs."

Book Synopsis Approaches to the African Novel by : Charles E. Nnolim
Download or read book Approaches to the African Novel written by Charles E. Nnolim and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2010 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Third Edition of Approaches to the African Novel is a child of necessity. Because of the unfortunate death of the publisher of Saros International who issued the First Edition and high demand this third, enlarged edition has become imperative. Three new essays (all previously published) are added, two expectedly on Achebe (the father of the African novel) and one on Mongp Betiís Mission to Kala which was partially anthologised in Contemporary Literary Criticism (Volume 27, 1984). Achebeís Things Fall Apart as an Igbo national epic has evoked a spate of reactions from critics of African literature especially the troika Chinweizu et al. in Toward the Decolonization of African Literature. It was also anthologised in Modern Black Literature edited by S. Okechukwu Menu (1971). The essay on Arrow of God whose structure and meaning has been largely avoided by other critics is included here for further airing. For gender balance, as the previous volume contained no essays on women writers, an essay on Flora Nwapa has been added. Since the novels discussed in this volume exclusively are on the African literature south of the Sahara, the last essay on Peter Abrahams comes in to round out this collection of essays with a study of a south African writer, for geographical balance.

Download or read book Sartre and Fiction written by Gary Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sartre and Fiction offers a clear and accessible introduction to the extensive fictional writings of Jean-Paul Sartre. Providing comprehensive coverage of his short stories, novels and plays, the book examines the close links between the ideas and themes in his fiction and those put forward in his formal philosophical works. Sartre wrote fiction as a means of developing and enriching his philosophical ideas. Gary Cox reveals the extent to which Sartre's fictional writings are truly philosophical and an integral part of his overall intellectual vision. He also explores the ways in which Sartre's fictional writings reflect the personal, historical and political context in which they were written. Aside from yielding a wealth of personal and historical detail, this fascinating book demonstrates that the only way to fully appreciate Sartre's grand philosophical project is to understand the man himself and the troubled times though which he lived and wrote. Ideal for undergraduate students encountering Sartre for the first time, this book offers the first sustained introduction to Sartre's fictional oeuvre.

Book Synopsis The African Novel and the Modernist Tradition by : David I. Ker
Download or read book The African Novel and the Modernist Tradition written by David I. Ker and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Novel and the Modernist Tradition challenges, from a literary perspective, the general thinking that what is European and American is uniquely different from what is African. The book examines key African novels side by side with British and American modernist novels. Through this comparative study, it demonstrates the manner in which several African novelists have taken full advantage of the experimentation that modernism offers to tackle their own 'crisis of culture'. This study shows that African novelists clearly understand what modernism is and employ to advantage its consciousness of disorder, despair, and anarchy. The African Novel and the Modernist Tradition is thus able to conclude that the African novel is part of a larger fictional universe.
