Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of award-winning historical romance, Lois Greiman, a classic Scottish Highlander Romance “Lois Greiman creates the ideal atmosphere for her compelling tale, placing her strong characters in difficult situations and building a dramatic conflict that keeps us wondering just how their relationship will be resolved. Ms. Greiman’s hallmark powerful storytelling makes her a must-read author.” –Romantic Times Highland Rogues #2 1535, Scotland Gilmour MacGowan can have any lass he desires...except for the headstrong and beautiful Isobel Frasier who wants nothing to do with the arrogant head of Clan MacGowan. But Gilmour is used to getting what he wants... and he wants Isobel! Fiercely independent—and a wee tad stubborn—Isobel must not marry if she’s going to protect her own clan, especially if that rogue of rogues, Gilmour is the threat he appears to be (tempting though he is...!) Then unexpected danger rears its head, and, as Gilmour and Isobel journey through the Highlands together, they may find that loving your enemy is the most satisfying adventure of them all!

Book excerpt: The Edinburgh Companion to Contemporary Scottish Literature examines the ways in which the cultural and political role of Scottish writing has changed since the country's successful referendum on national self-rule in 1997. In doing so, it makes a convincing case for a distinctive post-devolution Scottish criticism. Introducing over forty original essays under four main headings - 'Contexts', 'Genres', 'Authors' and 'Topics' - the volume covers the entire spectrum of current interests and topical concerns in the field of Scottish studies and heralds a new era in Scottish writing, literary criticism and cultural theory. It records and critically outlines prominent literary trends and developments, the specific political circumstances and aesthetic agendas that propel them, as well as literature's capacity for envisioning new and alternative futures. Issues under discussion include class, sexuality and gender, nationhood and globalisation, the New Europe and cosmopolitan citizenship, postcoloniality,

Book excerpt: Chrissy McMullen #8 "Dangerously funny stuff." –Janet Evanovich LA therapist, Chrissy McMullen and her on-again-off-again LAPD hottie, Jack Rivera finally agreed that it would be best for the rest of the civilized world if they ended their too-hot-to-handle relationship... Until they run into each other at a posh Rodeo Drive restaurant. Chrissy is there with a date. Rivera is escorting his mother, who ends up guarding the restroom door while the ex-couple revisits their decision to break up (a discussion that involves the removal of many, many items of clothing and continues at Rivera’s house.) Their reunion was definitely explosive—but could it actually be deadly? The Black Flames, the most bloodthirsty criminal gang in modern history, arrives at Rivera’s front door carrying a big grudge and deadly weapons...and now Chrissy is also a target! Desperate to protect her, Rivera convinces her to leave town until it’s safe. Thus Chrissy’s frantic exile to parts unknown—a city girl adrift in wheat fields! Sans money, decent clothing, and any kind of technology, Chrissy takes an alias, becomes a waitress and spends her time defending her dubious honor and trolling for tips. She can feel her IQ dropping with every slack-jawed patron she serves; with the exception of Hiro Jonovich Danshov, the intriguing mystery man who Chrissy hates....but is undeniably (although she DOES deny it) attracted to. Will he teach her to defend herself before they kill each other or is he a member of the very gang she’s hiding from? "Lois Greiman is a modern day Dorothy Sayers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the two world wars, middle-class America experienced a "marriage crisis" that filled the pages of the popular press. Divorce rates were rising, birthrates falling, and women were entering the increasingly industrialized and urbanized workforce in larger numbers than ever before, while Victorian morals and manners began to break down in the wake of the first sexual revolution. Vivien Green Fryd argues that this crisis played a crucial role in the lives and works of two of America's most familiar and beloved artists, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) and Edward Hopper (1882-1967). Combining biographical study of their marriages with formal and iconographical analysis of their works, Fryd shows how both artists expressed the pleasures and perils of their relationships in their paintings. Hopper's many representations of Victorian homes in sunny, tranquil landscapes, for instance, take on new meanings when viewed in the context of the artist's own tumultuous marriage with Jo and the widespread middle-class fears that the new urban, multidwelling homes would contribute to the breakdown of the family. Fryd also persuasively interprets the many paintings of skulls and crosses that O'Keeffe produced in New Mexico as embodying themes of death and rebirth in response to her husband Alfred Stieglitz's long-term affair with Dorothy Norman. Art and the Crisis of Marriage provides both a penetrating reappraisal of the interconnections between Georgia O'Keeffe's and Edward Hopper's lives and works, as well as a vivid portrait of how new understandings of family, gender, and sexuality transformed American society between the wars in ways that continue to shape it today.

It argues that marriage serves as a catalyst for intense identity formation because it functions as a narrative intersection for a number of overlapping themes on gender and the body, class and economics, religion, interracial and intercultural identity and nation building. Marriage provides a narrative space for commentary on cultural practices presented in the works in question as the foundations of cultural identity.
