Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lutheran Church Review, 1901, Vol. 20 The financial equipment of the seminary was still very meagre. The removal to St. Sebald had been a measure of economy, as it was hoped that the support of professors and students would be much easier on a farm of 160 acres, fifty of them being cultivated, than in a town like Dubuque. The lo cation of the Wartburg Seminary was one of perfect isolation and seclusion from the world. Living five miles from the nearest post ofl'ice, and nearly a day's journey from the nearest railroad station, the professors could give themselves up to their work of studying and teaching without fear of unpleasant interruptions, without distracting social duties to perform. It is hardly credible how they managed to live there and to support their large families, yea, to build up respectable libra ries, on a salary of one hundred dollars a year and the pro ceeds of the seminary farm. With the disciples of old they were able to say, We lacked nothing, thanks to the truly Apostolic simplicity of their faith and their life, and thanks. Above all, to the remarkable manifestations of divine provi dence which again and again removed their embarrassments, supplied their needs, and raised generous and steadfast friends in distant lands who assisted the Wartburg Seminary, not only by their liberal contributions, but also with their devoted per sonal service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Review of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1885, Vol. 15 Of revelation, must have, knowingly or unknowingly, rejected the words of prediction, departed from the ideal and the mesa anic-hopes as held forth by the men of God who spoke in His stead, and must, in the room of the lost divine picture and biblical views, have set up carnal and erroneous human figments, and have rejected Christ because He did not conform to this false picture. And that such is really the case, and that the departure in life and faith of the Jews of Christ's day from the truths and hopes as laid down in God's word, was really the cause of Israel's direful step, is only too clear from the gospel records and from contemporary literature. The theology and faith of Christ's contemporaries are not those of Moses and the prophets, nor are they a lawful development from Old Testaa ment premises. The Old Testament religion, as it was intended to be, in its ideal and pedagogic character, was no longer repre sented and reproduced in the beliefs of Christ's day; there had been a great departure from the landmarks of faith, and there fore when the true exponent and fulfillment of that faith came in Christ, they would not receive Him. They rejected Him be cause between Him and them there was a deep gulf over which it seemed impossible to pass; their theology differed, as does truth from error. And oft at night, when the plains fall dark And the hills loom large and dim, For the Shepherd's voice they mutely hark, And their souls go out to Him. Meanwhile, Black sheep! Black sheep! John Philip Gabler, to whom belongs the credit of being the first to make Biblical Theology a historical science, defined its work as the setting forth of the religious ideas of Scripture as an historical, fact, so as to distinguish the different, times and subjects, and so also the different stages in the development of these ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lutheran Quarterly, 1890, Vol. 20 T he Ascetic, Conception of the New Life passing away - In these days, as concerns this most serious of all matters that can engage the minds of men, it has been found best to set all the Old-time scholastic car/eats aside, and go at it in the light Of common sense. If a man will get out of sin, he must proceed to get out of it, and not stop to chaffer about the degree Of his disability under it. Gradually the ascetic conception of the new life, which houses it up to certain special experiences, and limits it to paroxysmal seasons of exalted devotional fruition, has given way, and men think, if they do not say, that the divine forgive ness is executed for them, only when they have had the forti tude, by the help Of the Master, to cut loose from their sins. And this common-sense View Of salvation must in the end greatly modify, and, perhaps, wholly revolutionize the methods by which the Church seeks to evangelize the world. If the power Of locomotion is all the responsible power that is left to the man, whereby he can move his members and get to church, the inference is that the Holy Ghost will let in upon him then, or through the truth which he hears there, an aflatus of feeling which is essentially not his own, in which he is held to be passive, and in which, finally, is embodied the whole re newing epoch to which he is called. N ow this makes the emo tional moment the sum Of all his years. We have already learned that in the field of the beautiful, emotion counts for nothing unless it is concreted in act. The painter must take hold Of his brush, and the poet Of his pen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church Quarterly Review, Vol. 53: For October 1901: January 1902 Such an attitude naturally builds up an equally deter mined attitude ou the other side. Anyone who is a firm believer in the truth of certain Opinions naturally resents an attack which is often virulent and unrelenting. He is told that it is only the outworks or the excrescences of his faith which are in danger; but the attacks are obviously and clearly directed against all that he holds to be essential. He is not prejudiced in favour of criticism, and when he comes to examine it he finds that, although it is quite convinced that most things should be disbelieved, it is not always agreed on the reason for disbelieving. He finds that the same critics who condemn his beliefs are equally confident in con demning the opinions of their predecessors, who in their day attacked established opinions with just the same self confidence. He begins to wonder, therefore, whether the present phase of criticism may not equally rapidly pass away. He has read Harnack's condemnation of the Tiibingen school. He remembers that there was a time, not so long ago, when he waslooked upon as inadequately endowed with intelligence because he dissented from its conclusions, and he begins to wonder whether some future critic will not speak as contemptuously of later destructive criticism. He sees how little constructive theology, how little that satisfies the needs of a man's soul and will be a guide to his life, criticism can give. He knows that the world requires a Gospel and so he hardcns his heart and stops his ears, and is resolved to hold tenaciously to what he has received, without taking the trouble to test or to correct it, and he uses the old-fashioned weapons of orthodoxy and anathema tizes the heretic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformed Church Review, Vol. 5: January, 1901 Amongst the famous hymns that have come down to us from the Middle Ages the highest place has been awarded to the Dies irae of Thomas de Celano, a Franciscan monk of Italy, who died about the year 1255. A host of eminent divines and laymen in Germany, England and America, Protestants as well as Roman Catholics, have with one accord chanted its praises during the last half century, and the interest awakened has given rise to a multitude of versions in these countries. Their number in the German language is said to be at least 100, and in the English, over 235. Of the latter, Dr. Schaff, in his Literature and Poetry, names 150, and indicates, by asterisks prefixed, 12 of them, which he considers the best. To the list he adds the fol lowing critical estimate: One good translation is worth a hun dred poor ones and will outlive them. Many were still-born or not born at all. But the ever-increasing number is a proof of the popularity and untranslatableness of the Dies irae, ' the greatest religious lyric of all ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessional History of the Lutheran Church The sad service, and yet a privilege, was assigned me by the author of this volume to preface his work by a few words expressive of the conditions of its issue. Professor Richard, after a brief yet severe illness lasting but five days, passed away, March 7th, from earthly labor in the full vigor of mental and physical life. Only one-half of the proof matter of the volume received his personal examination and correction before his death. This volume is the finis as well as the ripe fruit of his studies for twenty years in this department of scholarly research. It was the intention of the author to append to his volume a bibliography of the literature pertaining to this subject, and consulted by him in its preparation; but his sudden removal by death precluded the execution of the purpose. Fully two hundred volumes, chiefly Latin and German, were consulted, all of which are in the libraries of the Theological Seminary and of Pennsylvania College, save about twenty volumes, some not purchasable and borrowed, and several examined in the library of the University of Leipzig. It would doubtless have been a great pleasure to the author to read the reviews and criticisms of his work, and to elucidate and substantiate the claims resulting from his researchful labors. But he has now left the truth to vindicate itself on the pages of history. He labored to reach objective facts, and to relate them according to his consciousness of historic verity, a consciousness illumined by wide researches. The loss to the Theological Seminary of his living personality can only in part be compensated by a wide circle of readers who may be interested in this historic subject, and desire to be profited by his fruitful investigations and his gift of creedal discipline. Recognition is due Professors J. 0. Evjen and K. J. Grimm for their kind service of final proof reading and critical suggestions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Critical Review of Theological and Philosophical Literature, 1901, Vol. 11 AT last there is provided What has been a desideratum for years - a really reliable translation of the great dogmatic work on justification by which the most noted Of modern theologians chie y made his mark on the thinking of his age. Ritschl and anti-ritschl have been long bandied about as watch words of controversy, but the English reader has hitherto had a difficulty in getting to Close quarters With the man Whose thoughts have been the occasion of so much stir. Ritschlian Theology is a term made to cover a great deal more than Ritschl's own contributions to theological system yet, while books like Kaftan's Truth of the Christian Religion, Herrmann's Communion with God, Harnack's History of Dogma, supposed to represent Ritschlianism, have been translated, there has always been a shrinking - due, it may be presumed, to the ponderous and involved nature of Ritschl's style - from grappling With the master himself. The courageous translators who undertook the task of rendering Ritschl's dogmatic tome into lucid and readable English were certainly not to be envied in their work. It is all the more to their credit that the difficulties of their enterprise have been SO successfully overcome, and that we are at length in possession Of a translation which, in point of accuracy, clear ness, and frequently even felicity of expression, is nearly all that the most exacting could desire.
