Stark, Pub. 1910, reprinted 2024, 606 pages, Index, soft cover, ISBN #978-1-63914-231-6. This book begins with the documenting of the trials of Loyalists at various levels of Massachusetts society, such as those of native-born Governor Thomas Hutchinson and John Singleton Copley, both of whom abandoned Massachusetts to live out the balance of their years in exile in Great Britain. Next the author describes general patterns of Loyalism, such as the confiscation of Loyalist property and the Loyalist exodus to Canada. The bulk of this book is devoted to detailed biographies of specific Loyalist families. In most cases, these biographies carry the family out to several generations, the events leading up to the family's departure from the United States, and some account of the Loyalists' post war fortunes or whereabouts. Book excerpt: Loyalists, the American colonists who remained loyal to the British Empire during the American Revolutionary War, have long suffered under the pervasive belief that the American Revolution was due solely to the oppression and tyranny of the British, and that George Washington, Franklin, Adams, Hancock, and the host of other Revolutionary patriots, possessed all the admirable qualities ever exhibited by men in their respective spheres, and that the Tories or Loyalists, such as Hutchinson, the Olivers, Saltonstalls, Winslows, Quincys and others, were to be detested and their memory execrated for their abominable and unpatriotic actions. This near universal view led the author to inquire and to examine whether there might not be two sides to the controversy which led to the Revolutionary War. This volume represents his conclusions for the Loyalists in Massachusetts. The book, basically, contains two parts. The first part of the book describes the causes of the American Revolution, treatment of Massachusetts' Loyalists and confiscation of their property, their emigration to Canada, and much more. Part II contains "Biographical Sketches of the Loyalists of Massachusetts," including family histories for many, and their lives following the War. This volume is profusely illustrated with more than 50 engravings, paintings, and drawings and, at the collusion of the book, two Indices: (1) An Index of names; including the names of identified Loyalists whose biography does not appear in this work; and (2), an Index of Subjects.

In the great struggle for independence, those who remained loyal to the British crown were persecuted with loss of employment, eviction from their homes, heavy taxation, confiscation of property and imprisonment. Loyalist Americans from all walks of life were branded as traitors and enemies of the people. By the end of the war, 80,000 had fled their homeland to face a dismal exile from which few would return, outcasts of a new republic based on democratic values of liberty, equality and justice.

Book excerpt: When Thomas Banister fought for the British during the American Revolution, his farm and business were confiscated. He was exiled in far-off Nova Scotia, before he returned to a secluded life on Long Island. His older brother, John Banister married with a child, swore allegiance to the United Colonies, then witnessed the destruction of his Newport lands by the British Army. Convinced British laws supported remuneration, John left for England, where he sought justice for four years. His wife, Christian Stelle Banister, managed the family property and raised their son while the state threatened confiscation and the French Army lived in Newport. Tracing the lives of three young Americans during the Revolution, this study of the Banister family of Rhode Island contributes to an understanding of the war's effects on the lives of ordinary people.

Book excerpt: The original rebels: “Brings into clear focus events and identities of ordinary people who should share the historic limelight with the Founding Fathers.” —Publishers Weekly According to the traditional telling, the American Revolution began with “the shot heard ’round the world.” But the people started taking action earlier than many think. The First American Revolution uses the wide-angle lens of a people’s historian to tell a surprising new story of America’s revolutionary struggle. In the years before the battle of Lexington and Concord, local people—men and women of common means but of uncommon courage—overturned British authority and declared themselves free from colonial oppression, with acts of rebellion that long predated the Boston Tea Party. In rural towns such as Worcester, Massachusetts, democracy set down roots well before the Boston patriots made their moves in the fight for independence. Richly documented, The First American Revolution recaptures in vivid detail the grassroots activism that drove events in the years leading up to the break from Britain.

This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines internal political conflicts in the British Empire within the legal framework of treason and sedition. The threat of treason and rebellion pervaded the British Atlantic in the 17th and 18th centuries; Britain's control of its territories was continually threatened by rebellion and war, both at home and in North America. Even after American independence, Britain and its former colony continued to be fearful that opposition and revolution might follow the French example, and both took legal measures to control both speech and political action. This study places these conflicts within a political and legal framework of the laws of treason and sedition as they developed in the British Atlantic. The treason laws originated in the reign of Edward III, and were adapted and modified in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were exported to the colonies, where they underwent both adaptation and elaboration in application in the slave societies as well as those dominated by free settlers. Relationships with natives and European rivals in the Americas affected the definitions of treason in practice, and the divided loyalties of the American revolutionary war added further problems of defining loyalty and treachery. Treason and Rebellion in the British Atlantic, 1685-1800 offers a new study of treason and sedition in the period by placing them in a truly transatlantic perspective, making it a valuable study for those interested in the legal and political of Britain's empire and 18th-century revolutions.
