Book excerpt: The definitive history of one of the British army's most distinguished units, the Loyal North Lancashire regiment, from 1741 to the eve of the Great War. Within a few years of its foundation the regiment took part in the losing battle against the Jacobites at Prestonpans outside Edinburgh in 1745, was on the winning side at Quebec in 1759, lost again during the American War of Independence before winning glory in the Peninsular War when its battalions fought with Sir John Moore at Corunna and with Wellington at Vittoria, St Sebastian, Bidoassa, the Nivelle and the Nive, winning a record number of battle honours. The Lancashires fought in Burma and the Crimea and the final chapters of this fine unit history look at the effects of them of the Volunteer movement and the foundation of the Territorial Army.

Download or read book Victoria Crosses on the Western Front, April 1915–June 1916 written by Paul Oldfield and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During visits to the First World War battlefields the author often wondered where various Victoria Cross actions took place; he resolved to find out. Research commenced in 1988 and numerous sources have been consulted in the meantime. The book is designed for the battlefield visitor as much as the armchair reader. A detailed account of each VC action is set within the wider strategic and tactical context. Detailed sketch maps show the area today, together with the battle-lines and movements of the combatants. It allows visitors to stand upon the spot, or very close, where the VC actions took place and understand what happened and where. Photographs of the battle sites illustrate the accounts. There is also a comprehensive biography for each recipient covering every aspect of their lives 'warts and all' - parents and siblings, education, civilian employment, military career, wife and children, death and burial/commemoration. There is also a host of other information, much of it published for the first time. Some fascinating characters emerge, with numerous links to many famous people and events.

Download or read book Leadership in the Trenches written by G. Sheffield and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-07-25 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, despite the appalling conditions in the trenches of the Western Front, was the British army almost untouched by major mutiny during the First World War? Drawing upon an extensive range of sources, including much previously unpublished archival material, G. D. Sheffield seeks to answer this question by examining a crucial but previously neglected factor in the maintenance of the British army's morale in the First World War: the relationship between the regimental officer and the ordinary soldier.
Download or read book Aisne 1914 written by Paul Kendall and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of the Aisne fought in September 1914 introduced a new and savage mode of warfare to the soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force, their French allies and to the German Army. Both officers and men were trained to fight mobile wars. When they reached the north bank of the Aisne, the 'Old Contemptibles' would be stopped by the Germans entrenched on high ground, armed with machine guns and supported by heavy artillery. The British commanders would naively send their troops on futile assaults up slopes devoid of cover to attack the German lines dug in on the ridges along the Chemin des Dames and concealed by woodland. The British did not even have grenades. The BEF suffered 12,000 casualties. Their commanders, who were not trained to fight a modern war, were lost for a solution or even a strategy. It was on the Chemin des Dames that the first trenches of the Western Front were dug and where the line that would stretch from the Swiss frontier to the North Sea began. The Battle of the Aisne saw the dawn of trench warfare and a stalemate that would last for the next four years. Wide-ranging archival research by author Paul Kendall makes this the first in-depth study of the battle in print. His correspondence with surviving relatives of those who fought brings a human face to the terrible casualty statistics that would come to define the trenches.
