Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK • An insightful and compulsively readable novel about a complicated friendship between two women who are at two very different stages in life, from the best-selling author of Maine and Saints for All Occasions. "Once again, Sullivan has shown herself to be one of the wisest and least pretentious chroniclers of modern life."—The Washington Post Elisabeth, an accomplished journalist and new mother, is struggling to adjust to life in a small town after nearly twenty years in New York City. Alone in the house with her infant son all day (and awake with him much of the night), she feels uneasy, adrift. She neglects her work, losing untold hours to her Brooklyn moms' Facebook group, her "influencer" sister's Instagram feed, and text messages with the best friend she never sees anymore. Enter Sam, a senior at the local women's college, whom Elisabeth hires to babysit. Sam is struggling to decide between the path she's always planned on and a romantic entanglement that threatens her ambition. She's worried about student loan debt and what the future holds. In short order, they grow close. But when Sam finds an unlikely kindred spirit in Elisabeth's father-in-law, the true differences between the women's lives become starkly revealed and a betrayal has devastating consequences. A masterful exploration of motherhood, power dynamics, and privilege in its many forms, Friends and Strangers reveals how a single year can shape the course of a life.

Download or read book Full Circle written by Louise Studstill and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is one supposed to cope with being left a widow after fifty plus years of marriage to a wonderful man? That was the question in Louise's mind in the days following her husband's passing. During the several years of his prolonged illness, Ray had, as best he could, tried to prepare his wife to be self-sufficient. So, after she proved she could handle things on her own, Louise decided she could carry on and decided she would never remarry. She had one cat for companionship and that was sufficient. Thoughts of getting a dog for added security quickly disappeared; dogs require way too much care. Imagine the shock when this "self-sufficient" lady found herself the owner of a little red dog with soft brown eyes. Then, as if that were not enough, a good friend from the past suddenly appears in her life, a man she had known for over forty years. Read about the inspiring ways in which Jim and Louise reconnected after so many years and how a little dog "helped" get them together. You will be blessed by their love, faith, and commitment to each other and their ministry. This is a testimony of how a second marriage brought fulfillment and happiness to a couple and how their adult children quickly became a unit.

Book excerpt: Given the significance of spiritual direction in modern Christianity, surprisingly little attention has been given to the tradition upon which today s spiritual direction is built. This book delinates the history of spiritual direction for women and by women within the larger context of the history of Christian spirituality and its understanding of human perfectibility. By examining the ways in which women practiced spiritual direction, this study reveals the degree to which women influenced society by using an avenue of influence previously overlooked by scholars.
Book Synopsis Exploring the Future of Christian Monasticisms by : Greg Peters
Download or read book Exploring the Future of Christian Monasticisms written by Greg Peters and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The institution of monasticism in the Christian Church is in general decline, at least in so-called “first world” nations. Though there are many reasons for this, monastic leaders are confronted by the reality of fewer communities, monks, and nuns nonetheless. At the same time, many younger Christians are rediscovering the rich heritage of the monastic tradition. Though they themselves might not be called to join a traditional monastery, they are eager to appropriate monastic practices in their own lives. This had led to a movement known as the “new monasticism” or “secular monasticism.” Despite lacking a unified vision and any central organization, these new/secular monastics are attempting, in their own ways, to carry on the tradition and practices of Christian monasticism. As well, there is a movement within historical Christian monasteries to pour new wine into old wineskins. Traditional forms of monasticism are also generally flourishing in developing nations, breathing new life into monasticism. This volume looks at the current monastic landscape to assess where monasticism stands and to imagine ways in which it will grow in the future, leading not only to a renewed Christian monasticism but to new monasticisms.
