Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lost Ring, and Other Poems This little volume is primarily a monument to the gifts and character of a woman whose membership in the guild of American authors has long been recognized. It contains over one hundred poems, selected from a much larger number, whose production extended over nearly a half century of her quiet life. The aim of the compilation has been to illustrate the scope of her mind, heart, and poetic genius, - to show the depth, breadth, and quality of her interest in nature, humanity, and the divine order of the world. Her lively artistic sense was exalted by rare spirituality; her apt literary faculty was ever the servant of insight and experience; her minstrelsy was but the voicing of her aspiration and her love for the true, the beautiful, and the good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of the Ring: And Other Poems When genius of no common order is placed in conflict with circumstances Of peculiar difficulty, it presents a subject Of interesting contemplation to those who take an interest in the philosophy Of the human mind. Hence the career Of james nack has engaged the attention Of more than one eminent writer. The elegant memoir of General wetmore is familiar to all conversant with the literature of our country; and, in the present brief sketch, we shall, to a great extent, avail ourselves of his remarks, with a few additional particulars from other sources. James nack is the son of a merchant Of the city Of New York, and was born on the fourth of January 1809. From his earliest years his attention to study and literature gave promise of future distinction. His first efforts in poetry were at so early an age, it might be said of him as of pope. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ring and the Book A Lover of poetry who desired to make acquaintance with Browning's work once inquired of him which poem he should read first, and straightway came the reply - 'The Ring and Book, of course.' Browning's advice was prompted less by a comprehension of what would win and what might throw off a comprehension of what would win and what would win and what might throw off a friendly reader than by the sense that the whole of his own mind was more fully represented in this than in any other of his writings. Certainly he had shown his thews in the Ring and the Book; it is his largest and most sustained achievement. But a volume comprasing more than twenty thousand lines of verse - equal in number to those of Paradise Lost twice told - can hardly be regarded as an introduction to his work; it is perhaps the chief, the ultimate thing to master. Browning's friend, John Forster, when in early days he made the first selection from the poetical works, knew better than did the poet himself how to awaken the faith and hope and courage which are needed before we venture on on a consideration enterprise. Yet it remains true that the whole mass of the poet's mind thrusts itself forward with more domineering force in his story of the Roman murder-case than in such lyric pieces and dramatic fragments as are best fitted to gain from the outset believers in the genius of Robert Browning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ring and the Book, Vol. 1 The social organism, made up of living, growing personalities, each intrinsically valuable, but dependent on one another for the working out of their ultimate significance, is the closest exemplar of the artistic plan of the poem. Not content with social material, the poet devises an artistic method that i; also social. His own share as artist in the c non and purport of the poem falls into place, at the outset, as itself also an element to be taken account of in the interplay of human personalities behind the action presented in the bare facts of the story. What the poet's own touch upon the facts was, What intent he held toward them, and what his art's impress upon them might be worth, are, broadly speaking, the questions upon which he arouses interest in his first book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quest of the Ring As Philmon grew, the years of Timon became many. The hair at his temples whitened, his steps 'were slower, his'eyes were duller, his face more wrinkled than in the days of the boy's childhood. Thus it was that when he was grown, Philmon tilled the fields alone just as his father had tilled them before him, hearkening in all things unto his father's counsel and advice. Timon, also, told him of the things that had been, told him of the beginning of all things, and of the great men who had beenbefore him; taught him the signs of the stars, the old_folk songs and legends and all the many things he had learned in the years of his life; and to all this Philmon listened diligently, so that none was wiser than he in the knowledge that came from living. Now it so happened that one summer's day, as Philmon was working in his father's fields, he became wearied, and laid him down in the shade of a great oak tree to rest. The fragrance of green, growing things came to him, the lazy hum of tiny Winged creatures sounded in his ears, patches of a too brilliant sky made him half close his eyes, and the unbroken peaceful ness of all things about him brought over him such a drowsiness that in a short while he fell into a deep sleep. Shadows flitted before his eyes, shapes of things that he could not distinguish; all that he could un derstand was that they were happy with a happiness that he had never known. Then. There came strains of music, faint at first, but growing more and more distinct, rising and falling in a melody so sweet that all the cares and the longings of his heart seemed to flee away; and in the midst of the music there were words, - words so wonderful that while he understood them not, yet he felt that he should understand; words that he had known once long since, but had strangely forgotten. The music stopped; there was a hush, a deep silence, and in the mist there appeared a Ring of the purest gold, burnished until it shonelike the sun, so that it was impossible to look upon it steadily. For a moment it hung there, and then just as suddenly as it had come, so it vanished; and a voice, - soft, low, allur ingly sweet, - called.
