Book excerpt: In 1969 curator, critic and former Jewish Museum director Alan Solomon interviewed Craig Kauffman, Larry Bell, James Turrell and Robert Irwin in conjunction with an exhibition he was organizing. They are the earliest in-depth interviews with each artist. Because of his untimely death they have remained in his archives and are published here for the first time. The interviews provide a rare glimpse into the early careers of these seminal artists, documenting their critical, aesthetic and intellectual concerns at a pivotal moment, allowing readers new insight into an important era of American postwar art. Solomon rose to prominence in the 1960s as a curator at the Jewish Museum in New York, where he organized a series of first solo exhibitions for the likes of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. He also curated several major international surveys, including the 1964 Venice Biennale, where Rauschenberg won the Golden Lion. In 1968 Solomon left New York to take up a position at the fledgling University of California campus in Irvine, which was home to a dynamic group of young faculty and students. There he became acquainted with Kauffman, Bell, Turrell and Irwin, who have since been recognized as canonical participants in California Light and Space art of the 1960s. With this volume his engagement with these artists, and their roles in this important art historical episode, has finally been brought to light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neighborhoods of Fifth Ward, Fourth Ward, Third Ward, and the Southside of Houston, Texas, gave birth to Houston rap, a vibrant music scene that has produced globally recognized artists such as Geto Boys, DJ Screw, Pimp C and Bun B of UGK, Fat Pat, Big Moe, Z-Ro, Lil’ Troy, and Paul Wall. Lance Scott Walker and photographer Peter Beste spent a decade documenting Houston’s scene, interviewing and photographing the people—rappers, DJs, producers, promoters, record label owners—and places that give rap music from the Bayou City its distinctive character. Their collaboration produced the books Houston Rap and Houston Rap Tapes. This second edition of Houston Rap Tapes amplifies the city’s hip-hop history through new interviews with Scarface, Slim Thug, Lez Moné, B L A C K I E, Lil’ Keke, and Sire Jukebox of the original Ghetto Boys. Walker groups the interviews into sections that track the different eras and movements in Houston rap, with new photographs and album art that reveal the evolution of the scene from the 1970s to today’s hip-hop generation. The interviews range from the specifics of making music to the passions, regrets, memories, and hopes that give it life. While offering a view from some of Houston’s most marginalized areas, these intimate conversations lay out universal struggles and feelings. As Willie D of Geto Boys writes in the foreword, “Houston Rap Tapes flows more like a bunch of fellows who haven’t seen each other for ages, hanging out on the block reminiscing, rather than a calculated literary guide to Houston’s history.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty Years After the Sharon Tate/Labianca Murders, a New and Terrifying Investigation into the Modern Rebirth of Charles Manson’s Killer Family Perhaps the most notorious American murderer of the twentieth century, Charles Manson’s legacy extends far beyond his horrific crimes. As the wild-eyed, swastika-tattooed, nightmarishly charismatic leader of the Manson Family, he was convicted of the brutal killings of nine people in 1971 . . . including the Tate-LaBianca murders of seven in Los Angeles over two hot August nights in 1969. He spent the rest of his life in prison, and for the next fifty years preached his twisted philosophies from jail, attracting a whole new batch of freaks to his way of thinking. In The Last Charles Manson Tapes, authors Dylan Howard and Andy Tillett examine the Manson legacy. With brand new interviews with those closest to him, including Manson’s heirs, friends and followers, experts and historians, and hours of exclusive transcripts of Manson’s own manic preachings from his prison cell, you’ll get to view a side of this serial killer few have ever seen. Manson’s passing in 2017 has sparked into action a new generation of killer disciples, obsessed with the evil slaying spree he ordered and determined to carry on his “Helter Skelter” vision of an apocalyptic war. With the author’s on-the-ground investigation, learn how the man once described as “the most dangerous man in America” may yet live up to that name.

Book excerpt: Historian Hurewitz brings to life a vibrant and all-but-forgotten milieu of artists, leftists, and gay men and women whose story played out over the first half of the twentieth century and continues to shape the entire American landscape. In a hidden corner of Los Angeles, the personal first became the political, the nation's first enduring gay rights movement emerged, and the broad spectrum of what we now think of as identity politics was born. Portraying life over more than forty years in the hilly enclave of Edendale (now part of Silver Lake), Hurewitz considers the work of painters and printmakers, looks inside the Communist Party's intimate cultural scene, and examines the social world of gay men. He discovers why and how these communities, inspiring both one another and the city as a whole, transformed American notions of political identity with their ideas about self-expression, political engagement, and race relations.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: The Houston, Texas, neighborhoods of Fifth Ward, Third Ward and South Park have grown to be hallowed ground for modern rap culture, populated with celebrities, entrepreneurs, support networks and a micro-economy of their own. Photographer Peter Beste (photographer of True Norwegian Black Metal) and writer Lance Scott Walker spent nine years documenting the most influential style in twenty-first-century hip hop and the vibrant inner city culture from which it stems. Houston Rap, edited by Johan Kugelberg, profiles noted artists such as Bun B of UGK, Z-Ro, Big Mike, K-Rino, Willie D of the Geto Boys, Lil’ Troy and Paul Wall, alongside reflections on the lives of departed legends such as DJ Screw, Pimp C and Big Hawk. The book also features community leaders, rappers, producers, businessmen and family members, all providing an astonishing and important insight into a great American cultural narrative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dial Records catered to jazz musicians and record collectors. Charlie Parker was one of the major jazz artists to record with Dial. His Dial sessions occurred at the personal depths and artistic peaks of his career during which he introduced a number of such jazz staples as Ornithology and Scrapple from the Apple. His ten sessions associated with Dial are presented in detail and include the repertory, original issues and reissues, titles and notated transcriptions, and analyses of performances. Commentary explains many of the titles to Parker's pieces and collates the various recordings in which he performed his Dial repertory outside the confines of the Dial studios; these celebrated performances helped to shape modern jazz. In addition to the catalogue of Parker's Dial recordings, jazz historians and scholars alike will appreciate the historical narrative detailing the evolution of Dial Records, its owner Ross Russell, and its business relations with Charlie Parker. This examination of the 1940's jazz record business sheds light on the dissemination of jazz via records. Five appendices complete this well organized and thorough study of Charlie Parker and his legendary Dial recordings.
