Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lords of Trade and Plantations, 1675-1696 No longer do historians view the American colonies as prac tically independent communities, but as integral parts of the British Empire. More and more stress is being laid upon the relations between the colonies and the mother country, and as a result several extended studies have recently been made of the imperial organs of colonial administration, which however, have left virtually untouched the period from 1675 to 1696. In this thesis I have attempted to present a history of the Lords of Trade and Plantations, a committee of the English Privy Council charged with the administration of the colonies during these years. It has been my purpose to describe the or ganization and activities of this body from the point of view of its relations with the American colonies. Several additional topics might naturally have been treated in this connection, namely, legal review, trade, defense and centralization, but as these phases have already been covered at least in part in the works of Professors Osgood, Andrews, Beer, Root and Dr. Russell, it has not been thought necessary to extend this study to include the above subjects. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Reports and Representations of the Plantation Councils, 1660 1674, the Lords of Trade, 1675 1696, and the Board of Trade, 1696 1782, in the Public Record Office The total number of the reports and representations drafted dur ing the years from 1661 to 1782 can not be less than For the purpose of this report entries have been listed, of which 591 belong to the period before 1696, and to the period from 1696 to 17 82, representing the output of the Board of Trade. The list, however, is not complete, as some of the Communications were either not recorded, or, if recorded, have not been discovered. But in any case the omissions can not be numerous, probably not exceeding fifty altogether. The subjects dealt with are naturally of a varied character, but fall at once into two groups: those constituting the regular routine work of the board, and those constituting its manifold occasional activities. Book Synopsis The Overseas Trade of British America by : Thomas M. Truxes
Download or read book The Overseas Trade of British America written by Thomas M. Truxes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of early American trade and the foundation of the American economy In a single, readily digestible, coherent narrative, historian Thomas M. Truxes presents the three hundred–year history of the overseas trade of British America. Born from seeds planted in Tudor England in the sixteenth century, Atlantic trade allowed the initial survival, economic expansion, and later prosperity of British America, and brought vastly different geographical regions, each with a distinctive identity and economic structure, into a single fabric. Truxes shows how colonial American prosperity was only possible because of the labor of enslaved Africans, how the colonial economy became dependent on free and open markets, and how the young United States owed its survival in the struggle of the American Revolution to Atlantic trade.

Book Synopsis The Colonial Agents of the British West Indies by : Lillian M. Penson
Download or read book The Colonial Agents of the British West Indies written by Lillian M. Penson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1924, at the time, this was the first detailed study which attempted to investigate the workings and character of the powerful West Indian interest in London in the eighteenth century. At the centre of this interest stood the Colonial Agent, an office which had come into existence when the West Indian interest was born. Dr. Penson traces its growth from the Restoration era, through the Peace of Paris, when its importance began to decline, to the nineteenth century when the office finally disappeared. It is based on exhaustive research in public and private archives.
