Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child I never stopped dreaming of brighter tomorrows, believing there was something out there I could do to make life better. I did what many kids of my background could never do. I fought my way to the top, became a trendsetter of New York's social scene, a Renaissance man during America's rebirth of the early '70s, an actor of film, television, and stage, now a writer. Being homeless at 44, after all I've accomplished, was a life shattering experience. "The Longhaired Boxer" is the triumph of rising, falling, and RISING AGAIN. It's through the lessons of others that we learn about ourselves and realize we're a lot alike and more resilient than we give ourselves credit. It's a true human story of challenge and dignity against fate's hardest tests. Of betrayal, forgiveness and rebirth.

Book excerpt: Before the publication of the second-century AD papyrus containing eight and a fragmentary ninth of the Mimiamboi of Herodas in 1891, Herodas was known only through approximately twenty lines which had survived in quotations found principally in Athenaios and Stobaios. Even after the publication of the papyrus and subsequent work on it, scarcely anything is known of their author. The scant evidence that has survived suggests that he lived during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphos (285-247 BC), on the island of Kos, and was a direct contemporary of the greatest of the Hellenistic poets, Callimachus, Theocritus and Apollonius. His Mimiamboi are short humorous dramatic scenes written in verse, often bawdy, reflecting everyday life and dialect. In this Aris & Phillips Classical Text, Graham Zanker explores what we do know of the poet including the language, dialect and metre that he uses. Each poem is translated and accompanied by an individual commentary with synopsis, information on date, setting, sources and purpose, as well as close examination of vocabulary and grammar. This edition, the first translation of the Mimiamboi since 1906 reveals Herodas' work in all its skill and subtlety.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “certainly weird . . . strangely wonderful . . . [and] often irresistible” search to find the real Garden of Eden (The New York Times Book Review). Where, precisely, was God’s Paradise? St. Augustine had a theory. So did medieval monks, John Calvin and Christopher Columbus. But when Darwin’s theory of evolution changed our understanding of human origins, shouldn’t the desire to put a literal Eden on the map have faded away? Not so fast. This “gloriously researched, pluckily written historical and anecdotal assay of humankind’s age-old quixotic quest for the exact location of the Biblical garden” (Elle) explores an obsession that has consumed scientists and theologians alike for centuries. To this day, the search continues, taken up by amateur explorers, clergymen, scholars, engineers and educators—romantic seekers all who started with the same simple-sounding Bible verses, only to end up at a different spot on the globe: Sri Lanka, the Seychelles, the North Pole, Mesopotamia, China, Iraq—and Ohio. Inspired by an Eden seeker in her own family, “Wilensky-Lanford approaches her subjects with respect, enthusiasm and conscientious research” (San Francisco Chronicle) as she traverses a century-spanning history provoking surprising insights into where we came from, what we did wrong, and where we go from here. And it all makes for “a lively journey” (Kirkus Reviews).

Book excerpt: This volume forms the second part of the three-volume commentary on the fragments of Diphilus, who belongs to the prominent triad of the poets of New Comedy alongside Menander and Philemon. The present volume comprises the text and an English translation of the fragments of twenty-two plays of Diphilus, followed by a full-scale (philological, thematic, literary, interpretative, historical) commentary that also yields insight into the reception of Diphilan comedy in Roman theatre. This in-depth study of the Diphilan techniques of verbal humour and performance aims at shedding light on the dramatist's distinctive place in the comic tradition, as well as showcasing a degree of variation in the overall image of the production of new comedy.

Book excerpt: Fourth book in the Cape Weather Mystery Series! If you're gonna box an octopus, best bring some extra arms... At the height of tourist season, an armored car drives off a crowded pier and sinks to the bottom of San Francisco Bay. By the time divers find the wreck, the cash is gone and the driver has vanished. The police are convinced it's an inside job, but local merchant Vera Young, whose boyfriend drove the armored car, claims it was much more than a simple heist. Vera swears the missing driver is innocent and wants him found before the police can throw him in jail. San Francisco detective Cape Weathers reluctantly takes the case but warns Vera that her boyfriend is likely guilty—or dead. What starts as a manhunt uncovers a criminal conspiracy of money laundering, illegal drug testing, and a network of corporations willing to do anything to protect their stock price. It's a case that Cape, the witty PI, can't get his arms around. And while his relationship with Vera is getting complicated, the list of people who want him dead is getting longer. Boxing the Octopus is a runaway tour of San Francisco's underworld which reminds us that when things get out of hand, having eight arms is always better than two. These quick-paced, often humorous San Francisco mysteries are: Perfect for fans of Laura Lippman and Thomas Perry For readers who enjoy private detective and California based mysteries

Book excerpt: This anthology covers writings by Asian Americans in all genres, from the early twentieth century to the present. Some sixty authors of Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, South Asian, and Southeast Asian American origin are represented, with an equal split between male and female writers. The collection is divided into four sections-memoir, fiction, poetry, and drama-prefaced by an introductory essay from a well-known practitioner of that genre: Meena Alexander on memoir, Gary Pak on fiction, Eileen Tabios on poetry, and Roberta Uno on drama. The selections depict the complex realities and wide range of experiences of Asians in the United States. They illuminate the writers' creative responses to issues as diverse as resistance, aesthetics, biculturalism, sexuality, gender relations, racism, war, diaspora, and family.

Book excerpt: Boxing and Performance is the first substantial piece of work to place the lived experience of female and male boxers in dialogue with one another. Crews and Lennox critically reflect on their ethnographic experiences of boxing and their reading of the cultural representations of the sport. They conceive of the project as an extended sparring session. This book offers a unique perspective on boxing in/as performance and boxing in/as culture. It explores how the connections between boxing and performance address ideas about bodies, relationships, intimacy, and combat. It challenges and renegotiates oft-repeated narratives used to make meaning about boxing. This volume examines questions of visibility, voice, and agency and will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of performance and media, and sport and social studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammar consists of many things, and one of the more important is punctuation. It is like the Rosetta Stone, providing the key to how writers want a reader to interpret what they wrote. Punctuation is even present when we speak. A slight pause is similar to a comma, a longer pause akin to a semicolon, and a stop equals a period. Question marks and exclamation points can be heard in the cadence of a person’s speech pattern and where the emphasis is placed and on which words. Almost all punctuation marks are represented in everyday speech, and therein lies the key to great dialogue—knowing how to use punctuation correctly with dialogue. There are some writers who are masters at it. Elmore Leonard was one of the best. Read his books, or listen to a few of the movies made from his books, and you’ll see a genius’s work. This book explains how to use punctuation in an easy-to-grasp manner.

And it needs one because many of the existing books are filled with explanations using grammatical terms that many people don't understand, and the people who do understand don't need the book. Like all my grammar books, I have done everything possible to explain things clearly and without resorting to grammatical terms or complex explanations. Everything is in plain, simple English. Items covered in the book include: * Parts of Speech * Punctuation (all fourteen of them) * Grammar Myths * Miscellaneous * How to Use Numbers When Writing * Abbreviations, Initialisms, and Acronyms * Linking Verbs * Subject/Verb Agreement * Latin Abbreviations * (much more) * Plurals * Redundancies * Misused Words * Capitalization * Usage Issues * Punctuation of Dialogue With more than nine hundred pages, the book is a comprehensive reference for grammar. It also shows many of the issues where the AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style disagree. The most important thing is that the book explains everything in plain English so as not to be confusing. It is easy to understand and grasp for any reader. Only a basic understanding of grammar is necessary.
