Book excerpt: In this new edition of his acclaimed study of American poverty, Harrell Rodgers carefully analyzes the most recent data on the profile of poor families and the underlying causes of the dramatic increase in chronically poor, mother-only households. After evaluating the record of past anti-poverty efforts, Rodgers examines the many new and proposed approaches to welfare reform, their prospects of success, and the consequences of failure - both for the children of poverty and for a nation that leaves such a high proportion of its citizenry, its future, at risk.

This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this collection is to provide a forum to integrate pre-clinical and clinical investigations regarding the long-term consequences of adolescent exposure to drugs of abuse. Adolescence is characterized by numerous behavioral and biological changes, including substantial neurodevelopment. Behaviorally, adolescents are more likely to engage in risky activities and make impulsive decisions. As such, the majority of substance use begins in adolescence, and an earlier age of onset of use (<15 yr) is strongly associated with the risk for developing a substance use disorder later in life. Furthermore, adolescent drug use may negatively impact ongoing neurological development, which could lead to long-term cognitive and emotional deficits. A large number of clinical studies have investigated both the acute and long-term effects of adolescent drug use on functional outcomes. However, the clinical literature contains many conflicting findings, and is often hampered by the inability to know if functional differences existed prior to drug use. Moreover, in human populations it is often very difficult to control for the numerous types of drugs, doses, and combinations used, not to mention the many other environmental factors that may influence adult behavior. Therefore, an increase in the number of carefully controlled studies using relevant animal models has the potential to clarify which adolescent experiences, particularly what drugs used when, have long-term negative consequences. Despite the advantages of animal model systems in clarifying these issues, the majority of pre-clinical addiction research over the past 50+ years has been conducted in adult animals. Moreover, few addiction-related studies have investigated the long-term neurocognitive consequences of drug exposure at any age. In the past 10 years of so, however, the field of adolescent drug abuse research has burgeoned. To date, the majority of this research has focused on adolescent alcohol exposure using a variety of animal models. The results have given the field important insight into why adolescents are more likely to drink alcohol to excess relative to adults, and the danger of adolescent alcohol use (e.g., in leading to a persistence of excessive drinking in adulthood). More recently, research regarding the effects of adolescent exposure to other drugs of abuse, including nicotine, cocaine, and cannabinoids has expanded. Therefore, we are at unique point in time, when emerging results from carefully controlled pre-clinical studies can inform the sometimes confusing clinical literature. In addition, we expect an influx of prospective clinical studies in response to a cross-institute initiative at NIH, known as the ABCD grant. Several institutes are enrolling children prior to adolescence (and the initiation of drug use), in order to control for pre-existing neurobiological and neurobehavioral differences and to monitor the age of initiation and amount of drug used more carefully than is possible using retrospective designs.

The Lord had far loftier goals for CWE than the mere construction of buildings. You will read about the ministry’s initial focus on construction, and how that focus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, transitioned to assist the local church in fulfilling the Great Commission by providing and facilitating spiritually effective mission opportunities throughout the world. It has been CWE’s vision to see lives transformed for the Gospel’s sake in all the World through construction, medical and agricultural missions.

Book excerpt: This study specifically describes and analyzes the process by which poverty-stricken individuals and families move out of the poverty group: from welfare, to low- wage employment, and finally, to a level above poverty, or even the middle-income category. It is a synthesis / analysis of over 50 Research and Development ( R& D ) projects sponsored by the Employment and Training Administration ( ETA), on the subjects of income and employment. In addition, selected contributions from other sources are included in order to clarify or supplement the treatment of the basic issues. Several of these contributions have examined how individuals on welfare become gainfully employed and once employed, move into jobs with wages adequate to raise their standard of living above the poverty level. Findings of these R & D projects, when examined as a body of cumulative knowledge, can be used as a framework for developing effective policies and techniques for the various employment and training programs focused on the economically disadvantaged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managers are faced with complex tasks all the time. Completing these tasks may require setting up and running a project or on other occasions it may need a short, structured action plan. A huge amount of approaches exist, in thousands of books, to help managers complete tasks. Occasionally, a manager has the time to go off and read a text on a topic like how to manage a project, but often they have an immediate requirement to do something now. There isn’t time to plough through a project management book. Usually, all that is needed is a simple list of steps, a checklist that the manager can read to kick start them into action. The core contents of this book will follow a standard project management process – starting in initial concept identification, and going through to complete implementation. At each stage there are tasks and problems that face project managers, and for each identified task or problem there will be a checklist. Unlike normal project management texts, which are written to be read end-to-end, this book is designed to act as an everyday reference source that will be picked up and used every time the question “how do I …..” comes into the readers mind. The book will sit on a manager’s desk at work and be referenced regularly. It will become as much an important supporting tool as a book to read.
