Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Long-Term Illinois River Fish Population Monitoring Program: F-101-R Segments 6-10, Final Report to Be Submitted to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service During late August and September each year 1994-1998, we sampled 26 sites on the Illinois River Waterway and one site on Reach 26 of the Mississippi River by electrofishing to monitor fish communities. From 1994-1998, we collected a total of fish representing 62 species (plus five hybrids) from fourteen families during hours of sampling at 26 sites on the Illinois Waterway and a single site on the Mississippi River. Of these fishes, individuals were collected from the Illinois Waterway sites, and 643 were collected from Brickhouse Slough of the Mississippi River. The year with the greatest overall catch of fishes was 1995 (7941 individuals, cpuen 325 fish per hour) and the year with the lowest overall catch of fishes was 1994 (3421 individuals, cpuen 131 fish per hour). For all stations combined, the greatest number of species were collected in 1995 (48 species plus 3 hybrids) and the least were in 1997 (38 species plus 4 hybrids). The number of species collected from upper waten/vay reaches ranged from 12 for Starved Rock in 1996 to 24 for Marseilles in 1995. The number of species collected from middle river reaches ranged from 23 for La Grange Reach in 1997 to 34 for Peoria Reach in 1996. The number of species collected from the lower river (alton Reach) ranged from 18 in 1994 to 25 in 1995. The Peoria Reach consistently had highest species richness during all years (1994-1998) of sampling for this project. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Long-Term Illinois River Fish Population Monitoring Program, F-101-R-8: Annual Report; December, 1997 Following water quality measurements dissolved oxygen) at each site, fish populations were sampled by electrofishing from a 16-ft (5-m) aluminum boat using a 3000-watt, three-phase AC generator. Sampling at each site typically lasted one hour. Stunned fish were gathered with a dip net -in - cm] mesh) and stored in an oxygenated Iivewell until sampling was completed. Fish were then identified to species, measured, inspected for externally visible abnormalities, and returned to the water. More details on the electrofishing method and equipment are given by Lerczak et al. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The first book of its kind in over forty years, An Atlas of Illinois Fishes is a combination of nature guide and natural history. It provides readers with an authoritative resource based on the extensive biological data collected by scientists since the mid-1850s. Each of the entries on Illinois’s 217 current and extirpated fish species offers one or more color photographs; maps depicting distributions at three time periods; descriptions of identifying features; notes on habitat preference; and comments on distribution. In addition, the authors provide a pictorial key for identifying Illinois fishes. Scientifically up-to-date and illustrated with over 240 color photos, An Atlas of Illinois Fishes is a benchmark in the study of Illinois’s ever-changing fish communities and the habitats that support them.

Book Synopsis Sustainable Aquafeeds by : Jose M. Lorenzo
Download or read book Sustainable Aquafeeds written by Jose M. Lorenzo and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture, the youngest, fastest-growing, and most dynamic protein-producing industry, has the key advantage of efficient use of feed that allows farmed fish to be competitively priced compared with terrestrial proteins. Sustainable Aquafeeds: Technological Innovation and Novel Ingredients explores the present and future evolution of feeds, explains the current challenges for aquaculture, and considers how advances in technologies and ingredients can produce aquafoods for the increasing world population. International contributors to this book provide state-of-the-art information on the profile of the aquafeed industry, including factors affecting supplies and prices of key ingredients for aquafeed production. An entire set of chapters covers the scientific advances and feed industry initiatives in accordance with modern consumer trends, updating readers on the most promising strategies. These include the use of novel ingredients for nutrient supplementation and the enhancement of their use by genetic selection. The authors hope to inspire a collaboration of NGOs, researchers, and private partnerships to replace wild-caught ingredients by accelerating and supporting the scaling of innovative, alternative, aquaculture feed ingredients, including bacterial meals, plant-based proteins, algae, and yeast.
