His account of the walk was published as Tudong – The Long Road North. Twenty-five years later, now an abbot and well known teacher, he and Nick, an ecologist, retraced the journey, visiting many of the places and people they encountered so many years before. This new book is the story of both journeys. Using extracts from the original diary, recordings of conversations that occured along the way and Ajahn Amaro’s photographs, Nick recounts the changes they found and their reflections on them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have a gift for coining proverbs. "A picture is worth a thousand words" was not, as you might imagine, the product of ancient Chinese wisdom -- it was actually minted by advertising executive Fred Barnard in a 1921 advertisement for Printer's Ink magazine. After all, Americans are first and foremost a practical people and proverbs can be loosely defined as pithy statements that are generally accepted as true and useful. The next logical step would be to gather all of this wisdom together for a truly American celebration of shrewd advice.A Dictionary of American Proverbs is the first major collection of proverbs in the English language based on oral sources rather than written ones. Listed alphabetically according to their most significant key word, it features over 15,000 entries including uniquely American proverbs that have never before been recorded, as well as thousands of traditional proverbs that have found their way into American speech from classical, biblical, British, continental European, and American literature. Based on the fieldwork conducted over thirty years by the American Dialect Society, this volume is complete with historical references to the earliest written sources, and supplies variants and recorded geographical distribution after each proverb. Many surprised await the reader in this vast treasure trove of wit and wisdom. Collected here are nuggets of popular wisdom on all aspects of American life: weather, agriculture, travel, money, business, food, neighbors, friends, manners, government, politics, law, health, education, religion, music, song, and dance. And, to further enhance browsing pleasure, the editors have provided a detailed guide to the use of the work. While it's true that many of our best known proverbs have been supplied by the ever-present "Anonymous," many more can be attributed to some very famous Americans, like Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, J. Pierpont Morgan, Thomas Alva Edison, Abigail Adams, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, to name but a few offered in this fascinating collection.Who wouldn't want to know the origin of "the opera ain't over till the fat lady sings?" This uniquely American proverb and many more are gathered together in A Dictionary of American Proverbs. A great resource for students and scholars of literature, psychology, folklore, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural history, this endlessly intriguing volume is also a delightful companion for anyone with an interest in American culture.

Book excerpt: Koba Sharikov is a truly dauntless man, who has achieved many things in spite of the difficulties he has faced, and has made the impossible become possible. Abandoned at birth to an orphanage in the midst of World War II, Sharikov's story reveals the true diversity of human life, from larceny to love, loss, and boatbuilding. His is a life lived to its full potential, where education-both formal and informal-became a passport to adventure. "I had a dream to live a life with no poetry unwritten, no song unsung, and no painting left unpainted, so that at the end, I could claim that all has been said and done." These pages scratch the surface of a life lived with vigour and enthusiasm, and take the reader on a vivid and inspiring journey. Follow Sharikov's transformation from the small boy who took sanctuary amid the roots of a tree near his orphanage to the man who moved on to provide similar roots to orphaned African children. His life's story is truly a testimony to his motto: "more is in me."

Then, one day, he met a person whose impact on his life would cause everything he had believed to waver in the balances. Would he be true to his faith? Would he stay in vocational ministry? Would he put aside his carefully guarded principles, or would he cast everything aside for the sake of what he saw as the ultimate fulfillment of his life? And . . . was that seemingly perfect fulfillment real, or an illusion which would destroy his work for God? Read Long Road From Annan Springs and find out.

Book excerpt: When a loved one rips your heart from your chest, and you are left with a broken heart and a shattered relationship, how do you respond? Do you walk away and write them off, or do you do everything you can to restore the relationship that once existed? When God created us, He created us for relationshipsfirst toward Himself then to each other. Any broken relationship is not in Gods plan for us, especially a relationship with a child. A shattered relationship with a child can be restored, and a broken heart can be mended. This is a true story covering every step walked on the road to victory and tells of: turning hate and anger into unconditional love; finding and giving true and lasting forgiveness; searching for the real reason for the shattered relationship; inspection, retrospection, and introspection; repairing the damage; putting it all behind you; moving on as if the relationship was never shattered; and God reclaiming His glory.

Book excerpt: The Long Road tells the true story of a boy who faced hunger, cold, poverty, discrimination and persecution due to his Jewish origins, but managed to reach adulthood as a winner. He crossed the world alone, working in various professions, fleeing war and Nazism, building and losing families, until settling in Brazil. In our country, he found peace, love, tranquillity, and finally a place to stay, raise his children and adopt as his home until his "passage" to eternity. This long journey is told in an autobiographical way, allowing the reader to have a sensitive view of historical facts, based on the fears, anxieties, doubts and dreams of a real character. In addition to the well-known stories of concentration camps, Henrique Van Biene leads the reader to reflect on the struggle for survival in such a hostile environment.

Whether we agree or not, life really is about a series of paths and decisions whereby even one small change can alter our lives forever. We usually want to blame others, including God, for our decisions. Only by examining the paths we have taken can we really see where we're at! It is only when we look deep within ourselves we discover that as writers, singers, musicians, interior decorators, or even truck drivers, we all have gifts! Having them is not to question; rather, it is WHAT WE DO WITH THEM that really matters! Wherever your passions lie, you can erase your doubts and restore your joy. Just imagine yourself on a park bench...

Book excerpt: This book is firstly a testament to those of many nationalities who found themselves imprisoned at Stalag Luft VII, Bankau (Luft 7 for short) in Upper Silesia, the Luftwaffe’s last prisoner of war camp. Having survived the trauma of action against, and capture by, the enemy, some as far back as 1940, they came from France, the Low Countries, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Poland, the Balkans, Italy, Hungary, the Mediterranean and other seas, and from North Africa. Many of their experiences and adventures have never been documented before. It is also the complete history of their prisoner of war (POW) camp, Luft 7, told in full detail for the first time, a camp that existed for barely thirty-two weeks from its opening in early June 1944 to its closure in mid January 1945.

Book excerpt: The Turn of the Screw, a novella written by Henry James in 1898, is perhaps one of the most widely read ghost stories in classrooms across the country. The story’s ambiguity and characters’ unreliability also mark the book as a work of impressionism, an important literary movement that’s often left out of the children’s literary “canon.” While best-known for The Turn of the Screw, James wrote many ghost stories during his illustrious career. “The Romance of Certain Old Clothes” and “The Ghostly Rental” are two of those short stories that young readers will enjoy reading, featuring relatively accessible plots and writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was our intent to write a travelogue of an around-the-world car race, the first of its kind in more than one hundred years. We began by interviewing JC Wilkerson, CEO of World Rallies Inc., and Kyle Vanderhorn, the official race reporter. Then Thurman Alston, one of the racers, approached us with an outrageous list of accusations, presenting a very different story from the sanitized official version. Thurman wanted to make these allegations public. The accusations were primarily aimed at Ed Talbot, the driver of car 23, a controversial alternative energy automobile which, it appears, has now been destroyed. The allegations were as follows: First, that Ed leaked information to the CIA about the radical nature of the car’s technology, leading to the intervention of the U.S. and Russian governments, and indirectly to the murders in Siberia. Second, that Ed’s irresponsible actions during the race were the reasons that the environmentallyfriendly technology in his entry has not been made available to the world and that he is to blame for some of the climatic change that will take place in the future. Third, that Ed was lying about the innovation in the car. It was actually nothing new, and was, in fact, fully developed in Nazi Germany during World War II, and then held off the market by oil interests. Finally, that his secret liaison with his navigator showed a reckless disregard for his wife and young daughter and affected his judgment. While these accusations appeared to be absurd, we knew we had to sort out Thurman’s wild claims before we could write an objective report of the around-the-world race. We discovered that there was some truth among these charges; a story hidden within a story. We became intrigued with our findings. It turned out that the race was a minor part of the challenges Ed faced. Our research had turned up a convoluted love story that alone would have made it difficult for Ed to have followed a different course of action. You can decide for yourself whether a less disastrous outcome would have been possible if he had made different decisions. Ed and Janet Howle www.thelongroadtoParis.com
